If nothing else, the fee automatically includes the baggage fee, which is €30 for the return flight. There's also a bit more flexibility on connecting tickets, which is probably also priced in

Very upbeat press release on airport website about the level of services available from Cork this year. Much made of the new Ryanair services to Poland and Lithuania. No mention of the fact that Wizz have pulled 3 of their routes as a result. Increase in EI flights to Faro and Barcelona highlighted but no mention of the fact that the Aerlingus services to Rome and Gatwick have been quietly dropped while Brussells is down to 2 a week.

Ryanair appear to have reduced their peak Stansted services by 2 per week for July and August while La Rochelle is only bookable for June and July this year.

Aer Arann or Aerlingus Regional as they're sometimes known look as though they will have reduced frequency to Birmingham, Manchester and Rennes during the Summer peak.

In general the peak Summer Schedule has a stagnant enough look about it. The media will probably buy into the upbeat press relese but I'm reserving my judgement untill later in the Summer.

It's the same in economy, though I'm not sure on who's side the problem is. Is it EI jacking up BA codeshare prices or the other way around. Just did one this weekend return, 100 cheaper to book 2 flights individually than as one through codeshare. BA out of Cork is very hefty for shorthaul, though longhaul is more reasonable.

Take a closer look at the booking class! For some reason, if you try and book shorthaul flights on the BA site, from ORK, even if you select economy, it quotes Club Europe fares! I called BA about this before, and was told that that was the best available fare! When I mentioned that if I book the flights individually it's a fraction of the price, and BA economy seats are available... So I think BA just don;t want Economy passengers for shorthaul, orginating in ORK! They only want the premium PAX!

I wonder how long until we see Ryanair pull some or all of the routes.

After all, unlike Wizzair, they have to pay full fees for them.

Simple error I'd image. A bit petty slamming an article for that.

Strange that Wizz have pulled Poznan since there is no competition on that.

I'm moderately surprised by Katowice. Although Krakow is handier for tourists from Ireland, as I understand it there is a much larger population around Katowice than Krakow and it should be handier for Poles living in Ireland.

The problems Wizz have had to a degree is that they are not that well known as for example Ryanair are in Western Europe amongst people who are from the countries in Western Europe.

They are very well known amongst Polish people for example, both living in the country of their birth and in the UK, and also in countries towards the East of Europe, but their brand recognition outside this is nothing to shout about.

Ryanair benefit from having good brand recognition over a broader range of Europe and on the Polish routes. I've used both airlines quite a bit between Poland and the UK/Ireland and there is much more of a mix on the FR routes between Polish/English speakers compared to the Wizz flights being majority Polish.

I can't see much Irish originating traffic using Ryanair's Polish routes with the exception of Krakow. Whatever spin is put on it the fact is that Cork will now have less seats in Summer 2013 compared to Summer 2012.

It's a pity that Irish people can't see beyond Aerlingus and Ryanair as it removes any possibility of serious competition on low cost routes for the forseeable future. The twice weekly Jet 2 service from Cork to Newcastle will shortly be the only scheduled service from Cork that does not operate under either the EI or FR names.

Maybe we could see Wizz relocating to somewhere else where there isn't competition ? SNN, NOC or BFS ?

Hangar6 - it's not just one way though, that is the way competition works. It perplexes me that some people argue the points that you do. You are basically saying that Wizz having a monopoly would be good, but on the other hand that FR and EI should be separate since a monopoly as well. Which one is it?

You need to look at this from the Polish side of things rather than the Irish side of it, FR and W6 have been duplicating each others routes pretty much for the last year now trying to win the battle for supremacy in Poland. Wizz have rather sensibly tried to tap in further east where they are much better known than Ryanair with the last few routes they have launched.

Both sides (FR and W6) have been pricing flights well under €10 each way on many routes, with flights going as low as a euro or even less on some occasions. On some Wizz has introduced services on FR routes whilst on others the other way around, people seem to think that just FR but it isn't the case.

Also Wizz charging for standard size hand luggage is unlikely to have worked in their favour, I thought that was somewhat of a foolish move tactically myself unless they were sure that FR for example were set to do the same thing which wouldn't have impacted them so much. Now for me it's an extra 20 euro on top of a flight with Wizz before I start.

I do agree that monopolies generally do push prices up. Look at Aer Lingus flights Dublin to Warsaw, since FR started operating on that route we've seen such flights come down by a good chunk since normally prior to that you were paying 80-90 euro minimum for almost all flights. But at the same time charging the prices that Wizz and FR have been is never going to be sustainable long term.

In commercial aviation there will always be people lowering prices in order to try and get ahead of their competition or beat them commercially, which is where cost base and economies of scale are going to help. That is not just unique to the aviation world however, it's commonplace everywhere and is just business.

Cool Too true

I was looking at it from the idea of choice rather than a particular race of people
Which is never a way to consider aviation which is usually about more than one national market segment on an international route and yes it does sicken me when posters look at one race rather than the market but fair point if its only from a polish perspective or not I will miss the choice as Whizz will be wary of this island in the near future which is a pity from the polish view , agreed

My point is there is countries where each airline has it's strengths and weaknesses with regards to brand recognition. FR enjoys tremendous brand recognition in the West of Europe and pretty good in Central and some of Eastern Europe and that is always going to be an obstacle to Wizz.

On the other hand there are some countries in the East of Europe that Wizz is able to link to Budapest and Poland that you wouldn't most likely see FR opening, since FR don't exactly have a huge presence in the likes of Serbia, Georgia, Romania and Bulgaria and Ukraine in comparison (for varying reasons)

It works both ways, same in that Aer Lingus are always going to be strong on flights ex Republic and Northern Ireland, but found it tough flying from Gatwick to destinations outside Ireland.

Reports tonight suggest that Cork Katowice might survive after all.
