@Jamie2k - what is happening in January that will improve train times to Dublin?

No I mean why are train journeys to Dublin going to be faster? Are the train speeds increasing?

ORK need to get FRA from EI, BUD from W6/FR and possibly PRG from W6 which would greatly improve links from the airport.
Frankfurt has to be the top destination the marketing team are focusing on. However I don't see what connections from Budapest and Prague are so significant to those that already exist through Amsterdam, London, Munich and Paris etc. Frankfurt opens up lots of transit and thats why its needed. Budapest and Prague would be heavily reliant on the migrants that seek work in this country and those who are already here. A few years back both those destinations were quite heavily used by Irish passengers for the weekend breaks we could then afford, there was very little transit through Prague, Malev had some success with Budapest. Aer Lingus drove CSA off Prague before cutting it when loads collapsed, Malev dropped Budapest because they lacked commercial sense.

I think all the hype of getting Aer Lingus on Frankfurt needs to be thought about, do we really want a carrier with virtually no bookable onward connections to operate the route when we could get Lufthansa to open the route and see them grab much more transit passengers. I believe the latter.

Cork needs a lot kore then 3 or 4 new EU routes. Increased frequency I mean Munich should be at least 4 times a week . Newcastle should be min 3 times a week all year around etc new UK routes or reinstated such as Southampton etc its always been said that Belfast City has to be brought back even Aer Arann said it was profitable.
Are you serious? do you think Aer Lingus are commercially inept? Munich is 3x weekly because it can only support 3 flights a week. Newcastle is 2x weekly because it can only support 2 flights a week. This is going back to basic economics, where demand exists it will be supported. Where there's not it won't be. Belfast nor Southampton will be back for a few years, Aer Arann can't seem to justify new aircraft at the moment and until that happens we won't see those routes back.

Faster trains is all very well but you still have to travel onwards to the airport. And now we've AirCoach and GoBe doing Cork to Dublin Airport in 3hrs 30 with only one stop.

Ehh the 747 Dublin Bus every 10 mins from Heuston? About 3hrs by Train/Bus.

Lufthansa would be ideal, but when they don't serve bigger catchments like Bristol and Newcastle, it's unlikely we'd see them operate Frankfurt-Cork. Aer Lingus is probably the only realistic operator.

And thats why Aircoach and Gobus are running lots of half empty buses, give both a few months and they will scale back there operations and BTW 25 minutes from city centre to airport during rush hour in Dublin..need I say any more. Currently the quickest train from Cork takes 2h30m that will drop to 2h and other services from Cork take 2h45m-3h that will drop to 2h15-20m through better scheduling and line speed increase which Kerry and Limerick services will benefit from. Frankfurt EI is only option becasue LH are only operating there mainline services from FRA and MUC from 2013 (I assume there regional jets are also gone from FRA) and they would want a daily service at least. Swiss to Zurich would be another godd option, good onword connections from Zurich. They would have small aircraft that would be ideal. Would expect lots of seats to be booked by tour operators which woudl help it.

Delighted to hear about the shorter train journeys. This will indeed wipe out some of the coach operators. So much more airy and spacious on the new trains.

Aerlingus to Frankfurt would be ideal if they could do a deal for onward connections with Lufthansa. I wonder how the marketing team got on at the Routes conference in Dubai?

Be brilliant to have LH doing FRA. It would be fabulous to have connections to Istanbul etc

Bluski, Istanbul is an interesting one. Turkish Airlines are increasing Istanbul - Dublin next year from daily to about 10 or so a week. In an ideal work if the likes of the DAA have their way your choice from Cork to Istanbul will be via walking, biking, a donkey & cart, a car, a bus or a train to Dublin Airport for the THY flight to Turkey. I would bet that your hope via Cork to Frankfurt to Istanbul with LH would receive little encouragement when there extra flights to be filled ex Dublin?

There are certainly enough Asian folk living in the Cork and Munster area to justify trying out a direct flight to Istanbul at two or three a week for connections to their mother countries elsewhere in Asia etc.

Cork is certainly on THY's radar but again the relatively small catchment area caused them to have doubts although they did look at it in late 2010 with the help of one or two personalities associated with the Halcyon days at the airport on the hill!

Reliable sources indicate that we will hopefully have a few new route announcements shortly. Aerlingus' Summer Schedule is as predictable as ever so presumably it'll be Ryanair that we'll be hearing from if the reports are true.

Don't got that far. Anyting that is not in direct compitation with another carrier to try and driver them off it. What are the odds that FR will all of a sudden decide to fly to CRL.

Well that is true. Hoping for a mainland Europe or two Dusseldorf Weeze etc but will have to wait and see.

But with Good as ever comes Bad. Don't have a clue how this is possible but I've also heard from a reliable source we could lose up to 2 Aer Lingus destinations.

Would say FCO (was in FCO and saw an inbound and outbound ORK flight in July and loads were not great) and possibly BCN days are numbered. Have FR operating to GRO affected EI much?

Since BRU started have loads to AMS or CDG being affected.

I like the Cork-Dublin train service, but it's not a good option for travelling to Dublin airport. One of the main reasons for this is the decision by Dublin Bus to turn the 747 into a leisurely sightseeing tour of Dublin instead of the express rail-airport link it used to be. It takes around an hour to go from Heuston to the airport.
I've used the Cork-Dublin airport Aircoach twice and it passed Heuston around 2:45 after leaving Cork, which is around the same time most of the train services take to get there, and arrived in Dublin airport around 3:20 after leaving Cork.
Hopefully faster trains and a rethink from Dublin Bus on the 747 will make rail a more attractive option.
