An Inverness link

I really doubt that long term Ryanair will achieve either load factor or yield to a satisfactory level on any of the Inverness routes. If this route happens it will be short lived. Also the new routes on EMA & LPK INV will be an interesting experiment. Does anyone know if Ryanair is getting a subsidy under the new Scottish fund for air service scheme???

Easyjet are launching a few EDI routes with some of this assistance. Eg MUC MXP & MAD.

Is Ryanair definately doing a base at BOH in the future , only that I can remember when Buzz was taken over it seems Ryanair were adverse to the idea of a BOH base???

Interesting times ahead.

EI-BUD,

When Ryanair took over Buzz there were loads of different reasons for closing down the airline - as they did also from Stansted for a month. The main reason though was because Ryanair didn't fly to Buzz's proposed destinations: AMS, CDG, BFS etc. And the base hadn't yet opened.

When Buzz announced BOH-PIK, FR immediately took over that route.

They have publicly announced (on local radio and in the press) they will be opening a base within 4 years or so. Ryanair usually want to place 3 aircraft at a base for economies of scale.

I agree with you about INV not being sustainable. I think the same about SNN. It is definately interesting to watch though.

Bournemouth & FR

Thanks for the feedback.. I agree with what you say ie reasons why FR did not open base at that time. But it did surprise me at that time that they did not proceed with BOH in their own right, ans fly to the usual FR destinations. I will be looking forward to an FR base when it comes.!

I agree also that BOH SNN will be a hard route to sustain. I mean Coventry to Shannon failed miserably and surely Coventry has bigger catchment than BOH ?

Have a very happy christmas.

Happy Christmas to you too!

Bournemouth catchment is smaller, but Coventry catchment is poorer - the result is that Bournemouth has a superior catchment - wealthier and travel more often giving the effect of a much larger than average catchment

Diversions at BOH due FOG at LHR & LGW?

yeh bournemouth's catchment is good - routes like Nice, Monaco, Murcia, Vienna, Venice, Rome and Milan would be so successful from there.

have there been any diversions into BOH because of the FOG at LHR/LGW?

Exclamation BASCO now officially closed

"More than 100 workers at an aviation service business in Dorset have
lost their jobs.

Staff at Bournemouth Aviation Services Company Ltd (BASCO), based at
the town's airport, were told on Thursday morning the firm would close
at midday.

The news follows a 90-day consultation period on the future of the
company, which maintains commercial aircraft.

Staff working at the business for less than two years will not be
entitled to any redundancy pay.

The announcement came from Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd, the
company that owns BASCO. "

Bournemouth Diversion Policy?

Does anybody know what the current policy at Bournemouth - Hurn airport is regarding diversions?

I ask because despite clear blue skies today and empty apron/taxiways Bournemouth was turning away diversions with the reason being the Airport was full!

Surely if Bournemouth would like to encourage new operators especially now that they have been granted money to improve facilities this policy is as good as stabbing themselves in the back with regards to future growth.

Bring back the good old days were it wasn't unusual to see numerous airliners (once there were 42 on the ground at one time) sat on the ground after diverting in. As i type this I hear a citation currently sat in the hold above Southampton being refused permission to land at Hurn and trying to find an airport elsewhere that is open and will accept him.

Lets hope that as part of the improvement process they replace the current management with people who have an interest in seeing the airport grow.

Thumbs down

Disaster,

Your citation you mention had to divert to Channel Islands after being refused, another one soon after had to divert to Lydd (of all places).

Earlier in the afternoon there where Eastern Jetstreams and Flybe DHC8 called up which divert elsewhere.

The day before the Flybes got refused and ended up in Exeter Bristol and Birmingham.

Southampton however accepted over 20 corporate diversion aircraft yesterday with all the problems they had.

All the best and happy christmas ppruners.

it doesnt surprise me quite frankly that diversions are being turned away. once christmas is here the servisair staff who manage the diversions can get away with murder (because MD is on hols), and the arrogant people at servisair bournemouth just can't be ar*ed to work - thats what it is. if the airport wanted to take diversions they definately could. Head of ops at bournemouth is old fashioned and doesnt want extra work either by the sound of it. im assuming he is the only one in charge at the moment as he gave that interview last night on Peter Bath poping his clogs (no one in marketing or PR to do it?!)

Re No Bizjet Handling Last night.

Is there a company over the far side that used to handle coporate aircraft called source or jet works?

With those Big empty Merdian hangars and now BASCO hangars Im going to see how much I can afford.

Nakata77....How DARE you say such vile things about the S'air staff. I can assure you that the staff do not pull a fast 1 ova the xmas period. Most diversions happen in the evening in the winter (fog etc...) and i can assure you that we are completely capable of dealing with them then when the managers aren't there! You think they only take xmas off??? Actually we mostly do it all on our ownsome anyway!!!!
With the facilites we have to work in/with (have you seen the ops dept) and the fact nearly everything is manual (PIR's etc) we do a bloody good job.
In fact the role of D.O is that of ops, dispatch, pax svcs (preparing certain elements on the PIL's), baggage tracing, and often departures boarding flights wen we are so short.

Try a day in our shoes b4 u comment....i certainly don't see any1 treating you that way!

I see BlueIslands have now introduced a direct flight to Guernsey on Saturdays rather than having to fly through Jersey. Nice to see one airline continuing to support Bournemouth even if it is only in small 9 - 19 seater aircraft!

Pax Agent

As you are probably more in the know than most of us here, can you give the real reasons that so many requests for a diversion were turned down during last week, if as many have said such requests were made.
Not having a go at anyone, but as a user and payer to EGHH would like to know why any apparent income like this would be turned down.

was on duty for some of last week,I saw that some requests were turned down by the handlers(servisair and signature) for good reasons. Signature handled several extra exec jet type aircraft and turned down a few that wanted to divert whilst signature were closed (they are under no obligation to be there during all airport hours). Servisair turned down some requests, i cannot definitely say why but understand that the main reason is that they have to consider the capacity of the terminal and arrivals area to cope with extra pax over and above the eghh scheduled pax. Also, parking for aircraft diverting then night stopping is extremely limited, again eghh schedules/charters/mail flights etc take priority.
there were more diversions accepted in the past but they didn't have to compete with many scheduled movements.the day that 42 aircraft diverted was utter chaos, several pax waited 3 hours or more to get off their aircraft, i think it was 1996.
Another important point, if you've been told several times through the daythat no handling is available don't then set off and complain when you are again told you cannot land.

If BOH wants to be taken seriously as an airport then I do feel the handling agents should be present, or at least available on request, during advertised opening hours. It was the middle of the afternoon when some executive jets were refused not late at night!

Also, parking for aircraft diverting then night stopping is extremely limited, again eghh schedules/charters/mail flights etc take priority.
Has the airport lost a lot of its concrete/tarmac? They used manage to park diversions around the airfield and this in the days when runway 35/17 was still in use and not a taxiway/parking area as it is now. What about the space the European B747s used to take up (6 at one time I believe) and the space around the now regretably closed BASCO hangar?

the day that 42 aircraft diverted was utter chaos, several pax waited 3 hours or more to get off their aircraft
This may have still been preferable to spending time in the SAM hold before having to divert back to Leeds, Glasgow or Jersey as some of the aircraft requesting diversion from SOU had to do. At least the time would have been spent on the ground with less than an hours coach trip back to SOU once disembarked. At least these pax would have got home the same day and I'm sure would have been very grateful.

It does seem that the easy option was taken - just say no. Even if only the SOU traffic had been accepted then this would have been no end of help to ATC, flight crew and passengers. The 'we are full' reason would then perhaps have been a bit more believable.

le tirer, i agree with all of the points you made, it is frustrating (from atc point of view) to turn aircraft away and more capacity would be great but was just stating the current reasons for limiting diversions(as i understand them).
sure there's room to park aircraft but no capacity to efficiently disembark/handle many extra inbound flights. as for the exec jets, for an authoritative answer someone from signature needs to respond, while i was there last week signature handled several extra jets and worked their socks off.i guess they reached their limit and had to turn some away.

Re Isn't the person in charge at Signature the same person who used to run BIAS, who used to actively encourage commercial diversions ? and another quite regularly posts here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Think you will find that he has not worked with Signature for over 1-2 years.

With Executive Handling - Today a visiting Citation and 125 went to "Exclusive" (Source building) is there a Handling agent over that side as today was not the first citiations and 125 visit over there.

If I was the passenger on the Leeds flight that circled Southampton several times then ended back up a Leeds would have been extreamly annoyed to hear that they could have gone into Bournemouth.

The ex cross runway is now called "Romeo" so there should be more parking than the oldie days.

qwerty 9

whether my points hold up or not is irrelevant, they are the reasons the airport authority gives for decisions on diversions, i don't necessarily agree with them. as i said before perhaps someone from servisair can expand on it.

as eurostar builder says, there are other organisations on the north side of the airfield, ids for example, one problem is that the airport used to just say, ''yeah, let them come'' and often handling etc would be done by the a.f.s(no longer allowed),also, many aircraft that diverted in had their pax stuck on board for long periods(leading to complaints from pax, airlines etc).so for good or bad, the reasons i initially stated are now 'policy'

as i said, i don't necessarily think they are right or won't change as the airport grows
