From my Understanding Dublin dispatch is that Arann are one year into a three year contract on the Irish PSO's. After this time the PSO will only be up for renewal. Last time round an number of operators that had an interest in them, but could not make the terms and conditions of the PSO routes with a minimum seat capacity and stuff. I think the figure is 29+, Eastern have a capacity of that but not greater on the jetstream. As for the Saab, The cost of the PSO routes would be alot higher than any of Aranns ATR's. Great machine but the fuel burn is as high as a jet with only 50 seats. Are some of the routes over seated? I'd say yes, Only thing that may happen is when they are up for renewal is that the Irish GOV/EU cut the requirements on the seating, that is in 2 years time. If Eastern are in Dublin, I'd think it was to start new routes from there not PSO's.

My thread was based on chats with RE staff, but point taken, i too would be surprised if the Irish Government would be two happy with aircraft painted red white and blu doing internal irish flights!!!
I would be more inclined to think that they are looking at the DAA assistance to start routes, hence the confussion

EU laws mean that UK and for that matter German or Italian or any other member states companies may tender for ANY Government contract in ANY member state.
If Eastern/Loganair or OLT want to tender for Irish domestic PSO grant supported air traffic routes they can do so.
Now if they need to be short listed and there is a pre-tender process (usually is) -This process can weed out weaknesses in their suitabilty to meet the tender specification.
If the specification is well worded (within a legal framework) then the actually choice of tenderers can be made very narrow indeed effectively excluding the likes of Eastern/Loganair and others and THIS IS QUITE LEGAL.

IIRC, either VLM or Denim has tendered for the Irish PSOs in the past. It is not that unusual. airbaltic tendered for a German PEO a while ago and was only narrowly defeated. I guess one hurdle to overcome for a foreign carrier is to convince the department in charge of the tender that not having the headquarters / maintenance etc. near the operation is no disadvantage.
As far as Aer Arann not having a suitable aircraft type available for the thinner domestic routes, a way out of this could be sub-contracting the PSO flights. Meridiana und Air One have done that for ages in Italy. The PSOs in Sicily were operated by German carrier Avanti Air on behalf of the local airlines.

I REALLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE

With the Irish economy in its current subdued state and with national infrastructural improvements reducing road journey times, I can only see the requirements for domestic flights decline and indeed something the size of the jetstream or saab340 may be best fit to the lower traffic densities. Who knows which regional operators on these islands will be left in two years time anyway?

Apologies to editors (Re: my praise of Eastern).
I promise that my intention was never to advertise! I am not an employee but I am a regular user of the service!
Understand totally the reason my post was edited!
(an apologetic) RTG!

Flybe to go into direct competition on the IOM-BHX routes. Same times as Eastern due to them basing another aircraft on the Island.
Wonder if RL is gonna compete or pull off?

Flybe seem to compete on alot of routes directly with Eastern, but aside from the closure of Inverness, I haven't noticed RL pulling off routes as yet?
Eastern seem to have a loyal frequent pax base for many routes, and as long as the route is profitable they will stay on it. Not sure what breakeven is on a J41, but possibly single figures depending on what is charged for a ticket.

Jetstream bit agressive surley? Nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition.
Lets hope for your sake flybe dont win the IAC contract and Eastern don't "do a flightline" imagine how angry your posts would be then!

There's healthy competition and then there's over-supplying a route with too many seats and very low prices to see off competitors, only to reduce frequency and bump up prices as usually happens with Flybe. Eg IOM-SOU which was once daily with Eastern, once daily with Flybe to start and now a few times a week 6 months of the year!
