WB This area is designated FATO (fayto) and is for emergency helicopter use overnight when 16/34 is getting its new surface laid.

So any extra security for El Presidente when he arrives shortly?

Any welcoming party - sombreros & guitars?

BA 757 was G-BPED, so def a 757! Maybe something to do with the schedules changing on Sunday and an extra a/c required? As I type, KLM 737-900 just touched down, also very rare, but then the first KLM was u/s! Apparently the mexican presidential team asked for all helicopter ops to stop whilst he arrives, this will be interesting! A Kittyhawk due in around same time also.

Tesco

What the hell are the Management playing at?

I hear that, with the ongoing downturn in passenger numbers at the terminal, they are in talks with Tescos about them taking spare capacity at the terminal for a new supermarket, thus taking up the available space.

I mean, don't BAA think that pax won't recover in future???

Ridiculous - at least there will be plenty trolleys in future...

Well they always said," A nice shopping mall with a runway attached." Even at this time of the year.

Tesco was of course an April Fool, but suddenly doesn't seem important anymore. What awful news for this to happen a 2nd time in the N.Sea & a 2nd time to Bond. Why couldn't the same outcome that happened at nighttime recently not have happened in daylight.

Dreadful.

Here is the AAIB special (interim) bulletin into the February "crash".
Air Accidents Investigation: S3/2009 - Eurocopter EC225 LP Super Puma, G-REDU
We were very lucky not to loose anyone then, today unfortunately, looks like it was catastrophic, and lets hope whatever turns out to be the cause can stop the same happening again. Heart felt sympathy to all involved.

I was reading one of the Unions was calling for a "grounding of the Super Puma". Whilst I fully understand why they are calling for such, how will their members get home? I do get slightly irritated with such broad brush calls, which may or may not be journalistic licence. There is more than one variant of the SP family, but it is the main workhorse now of the NS in its various forms, & I cannot believe after 20+ years of flying that all of a sudden there is an inherent design fault & that all should be grounded. Do we ban or ground 747s or other types after an incident or accident? I can only recall a ban for a while on DC10s in the 70s (stands correction of course).

Even local journos are a joke, & you would think Aberdeen Journals would know better. Following the recent Cougar 92 crash off Newfoundland, the paper showed the Cougar (Short) 61 that was in Aberdeen last year.

You see the helos daily & think nothing of it...then something tragic likes this occurs, & it brings it all home - these guys (both in the front & in the back) do a rewarding but dangerous job & nobody should forget that.

G-REDL

See the interim AAIB report is out - reports findings of a "catastrophic main gearbox failure" resulting in the detachment of the main rotor, striking the aircraft resulting as I understand it in the tailrotor also breaking away. I take it (if I interpret it rightly) that means one of the strikes resulted in the rotor slicing through the tailboom.

Truly awful - no wonder they didn't stand a chance.

I think that once the main rotor head had seperated from the airframe then whatever happened next was academic. It's just a real shame the blades didnt come down through the cabin and grant them a mercifully quick end...

Hi all.

Read a small snippet about "investment continuing" at the airport - new or refurbed catering units (Tesco is coming! ) & another deck at the short stay car park, for our flights to HUY & LHR.

Still all quiet on the runway ext - whatever length they were proposing - unless it is happening without it being reported. What price it is postponed because of the BAA/Ferrovial precarious financial position?

Saw a Bond heli at the weekend, in the circuit I think. Are they still flying commercial flights for those other than BP? They did have one or two other contracts (Hummingbird for example).

Bond are flying pax offshore again for Conoco, Maersk Oil and Wood Group so far. No sign of BP moving their flights back yet.....

Richard, regards the runway extension. Given the credit crunch meaning folks aren't taking foreign holidays, I believe BAA have looked hard at the holiday destination options from Aberdeen and have decided to actually shorten the runway and extend the caravan park at the north end and open it as a proper caravan holiday park. Talks are ongoing with Donald Trump to use some of the sand he doesn't want to create an artificial beach.

About bloody time!!! Thon caravan park is far too small as it is. Funnily enough, I see Trump is after more land for his utopia!

Turkish Delight

GSM summer schedule to Dalaman started this week - believe first flight was full, a nice piece of good news.

SGX Dalaman summer charters starts today, with B738.

Liverpool

It seems Eastern are to be the latest airline to have a bash at linking Liverpool & Aberdeen...lost count over the years how many have tried & failed, for whatever reason.

Ryanair...Lakeside...Air Ecosse I think & there was someone in the 90s with a Bandit IIRC...

re Liverpool

Regarding Eastern's new route linking ABZ and LPL, they will not last long if their fares are anything like any of the other destinations they serve and that's a fact.

We shall see. The route is in fact ABZ-LPL-SOU, how wonder how this will affect ABZ-NCL-SOU. Will they split ABZ-NCL & NCL-SOU into separate routes, or will it route ABZ-NCL-somewhere else, eg. LBA or EMA. May not happen, but I could see ABZ-NCL-LBA, unless the Flybe competition on LBA persuades T3 to keep the route direct.

Interesting that CWL & LPL have or are to come back at a time where pax nos. are dropping sharply.

BP to resume using Bond on crew change flights from this Mon. I read also Bond were to replace the two hulls lost.
