If there is to be competition on MAN, would T3 be one of the few airlines able to look at it? If loads are not great, perhaps a JS41 could operate - low pax nos. maybe, but might yield may be sufficient for them? Mind you JS41 v
E135/145, but both airlines still fly to NWI which is prop v jet. Plus difference in flights times on MAN - ABZ may not be too much different over what is a relatively short sector.

Beginning to doubt, despite all the talk, that we'll see significant low cost ops up here. Always another market somewhere else that locos are prepared to serve first. When it comes to the locos they merely tinker at the edges at ABZ. I'm sure people up here would use them, after all other parts of the UK do, why not here?

See GSM have halved their proposed freq to MJV (Wed flight axed, now once weekly). Understandable, as I said before GSM will find some destinations will work better than others, & ALC is quite close by. Some routes will work, others will need tweaking, others won't work. Nature of the business.

Can't recall if reported before, Direct Hols apparently not operating MAH this summer after all.

Have BAA commenced apron work yet to increase stand availability?

Local press caught up this morning re GSM & Murcia. They say there was insufficient demand for a midweek flight to MJV. And "in general" they are "very pleased" with the take up of ABZ flights being offered (which sounds a rather lukewarm endorsement, reading between the "airline speak").

RYR say they are "delighted" with their routes, EZY have "no problem" with their route - perhaps the local press trying to stir it up somewhat between the locos that use ABZ!

(See 3x Sikorsky MH-53 "Pave Lows" were at ABZ yesterday for refuel...nice change from the usual humdrum 332s!! )

Local rags here:

Press & Journal
Evening Express
Might have been in the Echt Echo as well

Was actually in the (Glasgow) Herald I'm told, yesterday or day before.

ABZ doesn't know GSM has axed the Wed flight...it does now!

MJV & ALC are close to each other, & GSM is doing 'em both so fair enough.

Last night's KLM from AMS delayed 30mins at Schiphol after a drunk passenger had to be taken off as he was deemed unfit to fly by the Capt.

The passenger then proceeded to throw items (suitcase & some sort of airport furniture??) at the Capt, who had his shirt ripped.

Flight then delayed whilst he made a statement to the police.

Trust the passenger, fined 1500Euros, will have to make his OWN way back.

Alcohol, airports & planes just don't mix...but they will probably continue to be.

Flybe started their BHX route at the weekend...same type a/c (E145) just different callsign.

GSM reaffirmed their commitment to their ABZ summer programme, this after axing the Wed MJV flight. Everything else seems set to at least start In Apr. Apparently 5 crews to operate the B737 at the ABZ base-to-be.

KRS is the next route to start, think starts end of this week with bmi Reg.

Any more news out there?

Amazing the number of airlines who say "...we remain fully committed to ABZ...blah blah" after axing services - GSM said exactly the same thing.

However it is as much an indictment on the people of the area. They say: "we want flights (business &/or leisure) to A, B & C" yet, when services are announced or introduced, the public don't buy them. And they have been advertised, so it's not "out of sight, out of mind". Not the first time Aberdeen/shire public have been guilty of this.

I suspect the holiday cos/airlines are maybe discovering the CATCHMENT AREA isn't as large as other areas of the country. That may be the underlying problem?

Will be interesting to see how the GSM programme pans out.

Direct Holidays/My Travel have put back the PMI programme to the end of May, anyone know if IBZ has been axed also? No word of it on the report.

Perhaps the future of ABZ is more "regional" operated business destinations, or loco routes to business destinations. And more done to attract INBOUND tourists (which is where Donald Trump & his massive golf resort plans may come in...if approved).

Edit to my above post - As Richard has pointed out PMI has been delayed until end of May (must learn to read properly )

I am not "normal" in that I don't enjoy the usual beach holidays in resorts like Majorca, Ibiza, Tenerife etc. They do absolutely nothing for me. My ideal holiday destination would be Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, Germany or even France and Spain (away from the Tourist areas) However the chance of getting a direct flight to any European destination from ABZ will probably be always zilch, so we will have to continue the usual routes via LHR, LGW and AMS. Oh my god how I dislike KLM - but that would be for another thread!!

I used to work in Travel and the number of people who used to complain that you couldn't fly to the popular destinations from ABZ were unbelievable. So where are they all?? Why have they not booked??

New LOCAL Lo-co in offing

This may help.

Hearing through the grapevine that local investors are looking into setting up a new AND LOCAL lo-co airline out of ABZ, to serve markets in Europe, having been fed up waiting for national lo-cos to introduce more routes.

Understand the concept has the name "Fitlikemin.com" & will use A319/20 aircraft.

Media spokeswoman April (forget surname) said: "This will be a major concept for ABZ, and will bring new low cost routes to the people of the NE into mainland Europe, where currently people have to route via London or pay sky-high fares".

They hope to have the airline up & running in 2008.

Unfortunatly Aberdonians by nature have no interest in anything except the 'costa de la cheap and nasty' resorts. Wouldnt it be great if we could get some flights to more interesting a classy places in Europe, Salzburg, Berlin, Geneva etc. It will sadly never happen...so we will either have to go without or join them to Malaga wearing our sombreros, carrying inflatable donkeys and singing 'we're off to sunny spain'...

YSW:
Probably inflatable SHEEP rather than donkeys.... Which is quite apt, as like sheep they follow the herd (EDIT: err, meant FLOCK ) & route via London most of the time!

Sadly yes, doubt we'll see these destinations regularly, unless done on a "day trip" basis, which I think all those you mention have been in the past.

Doubt they would fill even a DH8D or E135/45.

Fair play meanwhile to bmi Gp, they are the ones driving most of the recent expansion. See some rumours of a Baby EMA-ABZ route, to complement their BHX route.

Still feel ABZ having to rely on bmi, T3 & City Star for any expansion, despite the continual good growth over the past couple of years. Would be nice for someone new to come in.

GLAGAZ:
Would have been nice if true! Nae a bad name fur a loco loco airline tho min!

Hey you never know - maybe "Fly For Beans " would be very successful at ABZ as the Aberdonians can relete to that kind of sentiment!

If Baby did a EMA - ABZ they would cut their own throats on the Bhx - Abz as the numbers on Eastern's services are not great from EMA

Nivsy:

Hey min, dinna ken fit ye mean!

WB:

Would like to see Baby try CWL & EMA to ABZ. Former not linked, latter only has T3's skyhigh fares. Would be interesting to see what would happen with a loco airline on the route competing. But I take your point, BHX is close by, & may dilute the service if both operate. Would be interesting to see bmi's thinking on this, but I think CWL could be a good loco route. Beautiful city in a prime tourist location...oh & Cardiff ain't bad either!

HAU. Looking at a summer timetable which seems to suggest Coast Air operating a flight M-Su f/t HAU. This is something they used to do in the nineties, so anyone know if they are intending to return to the service? Must admit not seen anything official, nor have I seen their flights on the arrivals board. So is it just charters (which they do do at ABZ from time to time) or a return to schedules across the N.Sea? Has any service started, or have they withdrawn any intention to start. ATR42.

See couple of Nigerian guys arrested recently (one in the last day or so) as customs/police seize consignments of Cocaine (think both occasions off AMS flights). How big a problem is this at ABZ, and is it an increasing problem, especially if their is a (perceived?) lack of security at an increasingly busy terminal.

Aberdeen

Hi all
I was wondering if any ramp/baggage lads are on this forum to answer a couple of questions for me. I work for Servisair on the ramp at E.M.A and over the lastcouple of days our boss has been asking if any of us want to come to ABZ for a week to help out.Are you really short staffed and are you really busy?I dont think anybody has took up the call because the deal they offered us was really crap and also im just making sure that there is nothing dodgy i.e you are in dispute or something as it all seemed a bit sudden as they wanted to fly us up today(thurs ) and stay for a week!
cheers

Globespan to add a Tues flight this winter t/f TFS, thus going twice weekly.

Presumably with the soon-to-be-based B737-7.

"Other routes to follow".

Or perhaps it is the local press and useless council(s) not the public who think they know what people want and have an over exagerrated (spelling?) view of the Leisure market from Aberdeen (there's no argument on the Business routes), there is enough hot air (don't mention the bypass) from both of those sources to distort reality no end.....

Slightly OT for an example of a major character assasination of Aberdeen its attitudes, environs and 'Big Oil' have a read of 'A Big Boy Did It and Ran Away' by Scots author Christopher Brookmyre.

T3 have previously said they would look at KOI & LSI, but not whilst LOG were operating the route as a BA franchise. Now that this seems to be coming to an end soon, T3 may be tempted. Yes I agree it would be a good fit in T3's Scottish portfolio, as they also operate the WIC run as well as SYY. However T3 seem to have been quiet of late on the expansion front.

Ditto City Star. Anyone have any news regarding new routes they were talking about before? Has this ended up on the "back-burner" for now?

Reading that BA are putting a number of A321s on the LHR-ABZ run, is this the end for their 757s?

The short DLM season is apparently TWO weekly flights with Freebird, Mon & Thu.

The last "based" S61N was roaded out of ABZ by Bristow last week, the end of a 40yr era of the type being based at Dyce. Will we see their like again?
