...and we all know who the now infamous "HansNees" comment poster is on that Scotman's comments section.... Some people just don't have anything better to do.
A life well led and enjoyed to the full.

Since Ryanair have moved half their business up to GLA, I believe about 20-25 people have taken voluntary redundancy. The single flight a day during the winter isn't going to pay to keep the terminal heated. I can only guess that Ryanair want to keep PIK sweet for the free winter parking of half their fleet and the dirt cheap rent they pay for their engineering hangars.

I hear that another business offered to start up at PIK and was rejected by the management. Desperately short sighted decision if that is the case. Hope BA have more ad hoc work for the Polar hangar because at this rate there will be some uncomfortable questions about how taxpayers money is being chucked down a black hole with some questionable commercial understanding and decisions from those in charge.

I have heard some rumblings about dc-9s wide body operation, but I am told it is at a very early stage. Only heard it third hand so no idea if it is chinese whispers or not...possibly 767s or 330s? Zoom used to do good business out of PIK with 767s so maybe not too far from the mark??

Zoom was GLA not PIK.
Owned by John Boyle who made sure PIK lost gateway status in 1989 when his Air 2000 operation went to court to fly GLA-MCO rather than use PIK.

Has any kind of business plan been published ? By business plan, I mean a proper document with plenty of numbers and forecasts, so that Prestwick's performance over the next few years can be assessed against original expectations. 30 second soundbites do not constitue a business plan.

there has no credible business plan been created and made public, similarly the Romain Py report has been under lock and key since it was delivered. Apparently a new chairman will be announced "soon" and hopefully he will bring with him a decent team of managers who might actually get their heads out of their posteriors and start to do things that seem sensible.....

PIK does have a future

Cargo, Maintenance / Storage, Training and Business Aviation

With excellent links by road (and rail), PIK could become a centre of excellence for said uses - above

Take Liege in Belgium. A major cargo hub. PIK could easily accommodate all / any cargo sized aircraft and that in turn would create space at both GLA and EDI for commercial ops

R12-30 in EDI is kept in an 'operational' condition to satisfy the night mail and freight flights (a condition of the contract between Royal Mail and EDI), much to GIPs frustration

Let PIK prosper with business it is more suited to

I have to say, I agree with much of what silver streak wrote above. If I lived in Scotland (I am an exiled Scot) I would be outraged at the Scottish Gov pumping in money without having offered up a business plan.

Interesting to see how long this can go on for before it is deemed to be illegal state aid - my understanding is that loans must be just that, and repaid at market rates.

Well they've explicitly stated that the loans are at market rates so I can't imagine they're going to lay themselves open to EU legal action.

R12-30 in EDI is kept in an 'operational' condition to satisfy the night mail and freight flights (a condition of the contract between Royal Mail and EDI), much to GIPs frustration
Yeah but when do they use 12/30? Never, except when 06/24's closed, because actually although 12/30 is technically open, it's permanently NOTAMed closed. I suspect this is just a hangover from the days when Viscounts and Electras were the mainstream of the Royal Mail and Parcelforce contracts and used 12 for departure (in particular) all the time. So, returning to this thread, I can't see an Edinburgh excision of that clause in the contract leading to Royal Mail/Parcelforce moving to Prestwick.

As to whether there's a business plan, I don't think you should assume that because you haven't seen one, there isn't one. Nor that the existence of a business plan means Prestwick's future is any more certain!

The point I was making is that there will be an assessment at some point around continuing to loan money and the ability to repay, as lending money which is likely not to be repaid will be regarded as State Aid.

One thought why Don't Ryanair buy Prestwick.
Call it Ryanair Scotland West ( Similar to Ireland West Knock).
If they owned the airport they coukd fly all the routes they wanted. Do a load of promotional stuff.
It's linked by A train id even see them setup a frw Ryanair coaches to get Pax from other parts of Scotland. Not free but day a £1 Fare to the airport.
Like the planes try sell ad much as piss on board.
(All to help the airport funds ).
If RYE owned an airport Surley their costs would be halved.
They should really ramp up the Service offerings.
Even try get some PSO stuff.
(Woukd that work) They had some PSO contracts in ireland.
Eg Prestwick to ABZ Or INV hell they did one approach Stornoway given its runway is so long.
As they wanted to introduce A PSO to ED I and offer a london route and summer bucket and spade routes. Prob only twice weekly.
But The council reused to fix the taxi ways and apron.
Or so I read.
But then with Prestwick in O leary hands.
He'd have it looking ship shape albiet very sales driven.
Every single thing from the bus to everything bought in the a terminal RYR coukd take a percentage of from. The shops.
And if he coukd persuade this New Danish Mob who being European to Let him have an Airport Express train (couple of sets)
From Glasgow again all RYR Branding. Subsidised tickets but everything bought on the train again in his pocket.
THEN. He coukd bid to bring in other operators for which he coukd offer discount landing fees.
Ok so some routes woukd compete with his.
But every passenger setting foot from those carriers in the airport , Using his ships and cafes.
Car park fees . Or the train would inadvertently however small be giving O leary income from flights this pax didn't even take from Ryanair.
I'm fact by the time they'd either paid parking bought a snack.
Paid for the train or bus shopped in the terminal .
Even (id see him charge for the toilets) they'd have effectively without realising probably paid the equivalent of an Airline ticket with Ryanair .
Especially if he makes a point of making Prestwick the Cheapest Airport to a fly from.
Making each route have the most keenly priced tickets..
Now with a shiney new building . And even a Ryanair merchandise shop selling Irish Merchandise
Ryanair t shirts that kind stuff.
Real guineas.
He cannot fail to make a huge profit.
Cargo would carry on as Normal but id see him reduce the costs of Landing slots. To poach Cargo from GLA.
He coukd even offer the Loganair mail flights Free Slots instead if Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Id bet within two years Ryanair woukd double its money.
But would he go for it ??

Pity he doesn't read this forum.
I'm surprised he's not bought an airport already!.

I'm not. Why would he want to buy an airport, with all the additional costs and risk involved, when he can play several airports off against eachother to get the best deal? Maybe even get them to pay him for flying there......

Airports are hugely expensive facilities. Why buy an airport when you can get others and their respective councils of gregional development funds to pay you to fly there?

PSO routes are just aa silly idea. The Highlands and Islands are well covered from GLA. I Can't see many people choosing to fly to PIK when GLA is most likely the final destination of most islanders. PSO routes which compete with commercial services is just a complete waste of tax money.

Not quite an airport, but Ryanair have their own terminal in Bremen. Quite an eye opening example of just how efficiently and cost effectively a terminal can be run...

Which despite the other comments was my point.
Whatever he may be though of the guy is a hell of a shrewd operator.
Upscale Bremen. To take over a failing airport with still a decent catchment.
He can change 'loco rate landing fees' for all other traffic.
Obviously VFR and Light stuff would be lower.
But that's exactly what Prestwick needs is The Bremen model.
That place has lost lots. According to the forum.
Negativity doesn't mean something couldn't work.
I'm not stupid and understand the costs of an airport but respectfully some. Of.you missed the whole point
And Bremen proves it.
RYR would pay no landing fees. Every penny spent in the airport a cut goes to RYR

Bremen failing? as a frequent visitor to the city, a population similar to Glasgow, a frequent, inexpensive and reliable train service downtown, and one of the major Airbus facilities on-site, makes Bremen far from comparable with Prestwick.
