I noticed today was the last day of Easyjet operations from Doncaster-Sheffield.
The Prague, Amsterdam & Barcelona routes are all lost again while ryanair have announced that they will replace the Faro route from March.
This is the second time in the airports short history that Easyjet have pulled out. I wonder if there will be a 3rd time lucky for Easyjet at DSA in the future?

It does not look good for Peel Airports, they have announced losses of £26m last year.

Mike Morton has hinted at a new airline in an interview with the Yorkshire post
Airport's year to consolidate as Peel posts loss - Yorkshire Post
Hard to tell if he means brand new startup airline or not.
He said there was the possibility that a new airline could be flying from Robin Hood, although no announcement was expected until "the back end of the year or the summer of 2012".

Yesterday, Mr Morton said he hoped the airport could break even within two to three years. Mr Morton highlighted the fact that Robin Hood's long runway made it attractive for cargo flights.
He said: "We had eight freighters in and out of the airport in the last month. We are always trying to look for scheduled cargo traffic. It adds to the diversity of the airport.

He added: "We're second only to Luton in terms of destinations to Poland. Even with the downturn in the economy, the demand is still there."
next it will be
Donnie International did almost 3% of the number of flights that the local microlight school did

Im guessing a its a holiday companies flights, as they are usually the ones who like to get the flights open early for the actual holiday booking. For example, Virgin announced MAN-BGI was going 2 weekly for winter 2011 in winter 2010. Thats a fair amount of advanced info for an extra frequency!

Airports with Controlled Airspace (CAS)
Bournemouth has similar pax levels to Doncaster (just under 1m) and Durham has 300k pax and Sumburgh about 150k pax.
I don't see how the caa could justify removing the doncaster zone because of pax numbers whilst the durham one remains in place.

Figures such as 10,000 ATMs per annum used to be bandied around but DAP doesn't use single triggers any more (if they ever did). It's all about traffic density and complexity so it's more risk-based.
As a guide to future change, I think the last airports to lose their CAS were Prestwick and Southend. They were running at about 3000 and 5000 ATMs a year respectively when they lost their CAS in 1992. But I think DAP would have a much harder time withdrawing CAS these days because they'd have to demonstrate that the risk level for any remaining CAT flights was acceptable.
Doncaster has picked up a little since last year but Durham is now below 6,000 ATMs and continuing to decline....

Yes NorthSouth I think it would be a tough decision to remove all the Doncaster CAS, however the original application was a bit overambitious and called for full connectivity in all directions. A proportional response could be to withdraw 50% of the airspace or release it by NOTAM on a long term basis until things do pick up (I'm sure things will eventually improve).

New business - you could be loosing out
Just had an interesting conversation with a close contact of mine who is looking at the possibilities of starting a new lo cost airline and is interested in operating out of Doncaster.
They have sent an email so I have been told to Nick at Peel Airports the owner of Doncaster showing interest in the airport and also mentioning the possibly of Leeds too but not one reply has been made.
They also tell me that on the airports own website they posted the same contents of the email and guess what no response.
So for an airport that is desperately looking for new business it is shocking, no totally shocking that a reply hasn't been made, so for anyone reading this that is related to the management of either Peel airports or Doncaster - PLEASE READ YOUR EMAILS !!!!!! You’re loosing out.
Within the conversation they were looking at possibly basing 2 A320s and looking at twice daily routes for both aircraft with a winter ski program and summer program - this could bring in 200,000 passengers - not to be sniffed at Doncaster.

Whilst I commend your contact for attempting to start an airline in this economic climate, would ANY airport seriously listen to someone trying to contact it through the general email address? If it was me, I'd at least ring up, and ask to speak to someone who could help. Or at least send them a letter with the business plan attached.

It's not April?
Sounds good although without sounding rude, if he was really serious it takes more than just an email. You have to have emails, make tours around the airports, meet marketing teams, ground handling etc etc... even if it's just a plan.
Also while a new airline sounds fantastic especially to be based at Doncaster, at the minute it will be VERY VERY hard to get customer support. People like to book with the well known airlines, the ones that they know or feel have a good financial background, well heard of etc etc ; Are people really going to be willing to risk their money on something new like this in the current market...? It's still very tough out there!

Without asking them why it was just an email, you would still have thought some communication would have been given back even if it was a thank you but could you please give more details to progress this further or the like.
No reply to me is even worse; they should always sound out any propositions to me.

You need to remember their colleagues up the road at MME also had a a guy write to them with big plans of a successful airline where others had failed. That guy is now doing time for fraud after he conned people out of £125,000. Unsurprising that the unsolicited email didn't get a warm reception.

Even if it was true and potentially a start up, I can't even see DSA or its owners even wanting to see a new start-up launch there for a while anyway. Obviously a lot rides on things such as new start-up's (pardon the pun ), and that includes the airports reputation.
What DSA needs to be doing is growing the business that it is best at; The charter holiday market. Perhaps see work with TOM to get a larger aircraft in 757 or even add another 738 to the base in the summer. TCX and Thomas Cook holidays seem to be more interested than ever in DSA this summer so hopefully more to come from them. Perhaps a based unit for summer 2012 or more co-operation on TOM flights...
