One thing is certain, whatever happens CVT cannot survive as an airport unless it drastically reduces in size and stops pretending it is a contender as the regional airport. If and it's a big if, anyone takes it on then they will reduce much of it and develope the rest. If CCC say no then IMO it has no chance and will cease as an airport, full stop

call100 - you hit the nail on the head , in the current economic climate that would be the most sensible approach when planning a future for cov if there is to be one. Its about time some people got realistic about it.

Quarry

Ive heard on the grape vine theres a major quarrying company interested. And anybody who really does know Coventry Airport. knows whats underneath.

Is this what you mean ?

The surface geology of Coventry is mudstone and sandstone that would have been deposited at the time the glaciers retreated during the last ice age. By and large the surface geology is rarely more than 10m thick. The dominant bedrocks in Coventry are sandstones from the Permian/Triassic ages with some clay deposits, whilst to the east and north of the city there are Carboniferous deposits, which include coal measures.

Deposits under Coventry Airport

When I sudied Geology at Coventry Uni and latterly in Preston, we did a study piece on Coventry. The airfield HAS got huge deposits of Sand beneath it so quarrying companies WOULD be interested except that the airfield has a covenant on it which would not allow that excavation.

Also, Mrs Jones in the Village would probably object to the 100 or so lorries that went past her door every day......bet she now wishes she kept her gob shut about the Thomson 737's !!

Latest news, Swiss company doing due diligence and have exclusivity for a couple more weeks the liquidator says. How true that is, is anybody's guess.

As she (they) did when In Transit applied for extra vehicles on their operating licence. I think the Baginton lot just object to anything!

I'm under the beleif that as soon as the airport reverted back to the council when Wmail went under the covenant which meant it had to be kept as a airport ceased to be. However i dont think the council will let that happen.

Let's hope someone is doing something, we've seen little evidence so far. CCC and any interested party need to move quickly too, or there'll be no one left to operate an airport for!

Fingers crossed for the people whose jobs are at stake.

Probationary post !!

Thought id better make another post as it seems if you only have 1,2,3 posts you seem to be classed as on probation !! The reason this thread has generated alot of new interest is because there are people out there who relied on the airport as a source of income and career, and although this is a rumour forum its possibly one of the very few places that any info can be found due to the lack of info given out to those who really could do with knowing ( if there is any to give ).

Are you sure the Post Office was against CVT airport expansion?

I do not want to contradict you but I'm pretty sure we have a copy of an old newspaper article at Atlantic Flight Traning; and that article is on the wall of the Flight Planning Room (first on the right after the stairs)...

If you have a look at it tomorrow morning you will notice that one of the interviewed people is the man behind the post office desk...

The article went out when Thompson Fly UK, left CVT after the building of a new terminal was refused. Well that chap anyway wasn't against the developement of CVT, and he was happy to have a new terminal; moreover he was really sorry for any job loss and for the financial loss within baginton. (I'm recalling all these things from my memory so I might be wrong; I will double check tomorrow)...

Anyway, it's all about money... Of course the locals might not be happy to have an airport with big jets overflying their houses at 500 feet. No one would be happy to have an airport next to his garden.

But by the way at this time, the re-opening of CVT will give new financial income and more new business opportunities, than problems to the locals...

That is really true...

Something has to happen soon, or everyone will call him self out of this mess, moving somewhere else;

Wherever you go in Coventry Airport, from the little cafe, to the TO, they are all waiting for an outcome within the next two-three weeks, otherwise decisions will be taken anyway, whatever the airport's future.

And it's sensible... Why AFT should have a/c in Cranfield, Wellesbourne and Leicester moving cadets frome there to here and vice versa... Why should they wait months whne they have solutions to go somewhere else with better and ready services?

And why Atlantic Airlines should take the risk to land a B737 or an ATP at an un-licesed aerodrome without fire cover and any ATCS, just to maintain their a/c in CVT, when they might go in bigger airports with all the services they might desire?

All CVT based Companies, will have to take a decision whatever the future in Coventry, as they might need to move ASAP just to survive.

Just for the record, Atlantic Airlines arrange fire cover for all movements by their aircraft.

I find it hard to imagine that Shakespeare would be a great success in Covilha, central Portugal (which is where COV/LPCV is).

But looks like a nice place for you to go, Penny

I can assure you Nav3 that Baginton Post Office did not advertise anti-airport expansion posters in it's windows. Also, the owners of the business support Coventry Airport, as do the other few Baginton business's (of which, I own one).

You always seem to get people moaning when any form of "expanision" of an airport, If I remember RAF Baginton dates from the 1930's , a good 20 years before some of the houses right next to the airport were constructed. If you go and buy a house right next to an airport, you shoudnt be allowed to complain against the noise!!
