CityJet makes loss of €55.4m
SWORDS-BASED airline CityJet made an operating loss of €55.4 million in the 12 months to the end of March 2009 in spite of recording a 5 per cent increase in passenger traffic.

They made a loss to the end of year March 2007 of around 17million I think. They haven't included the addition of VLM in these accounts.

Wow. I had heard about the Dash 8s but it would be great to see them get the Cseries. Had a night stop in Montreal recently and saw some info on them. They look very nice machine. Probably a bit to early to count the chickens though..

Seems like an usual replacement plan on the face of it, they must be predicting a decent growth in passenger numbers on the VLM routes as they'd be moving from a 58 seat F50 aircraft to a 78 seat Q400. Multiply this across the fleet and that's quite a ramp up in ASK's.
The C-Series is an interesting aircraft but will PW be able to deliver the engine on time? The last couple of PW projects have been expensive disaters (e.g. PW6000, PW4098 etc.). The latest CRJ1000 while being a relatively simple stretch has now been delay by about a year. Also, from my perspective, the E-Jets (e.g. E190) look like a better proposition in terms of getting your hands on a proven aircraft with most of the serious bugs worked out already.
Either way, all the best to them!

Q400 for F50's and the C-Series to replace the RJ's?

If the F50's only have 50 seats replacing them with the Q400 would be a 50%+ increase in seats. Wouldn't the 50 seater Q300 or the new 46 seater ATR42-600 be a better replacement for the F50's and the Scotairways D328's.
With one of Air France'sother regional airlines and KLM Cityhopper adding E-jets maybe they would be a better replacement for the RJ85's

Hi BAlady,
The 58 seat figure for the F50 is the high density layout but it's more likely to be nearer 50 with VLM. I think the business case for the replacement would depend very much on the routes they plan on operating. If you assume they go for the same routes as now (incl. the same WX / VLM split), then I'd argue the ATR72 is the way to go. The direct operating cost difference between the ATR42 and ATR72 is minimal so the additional capacity of the 72 could win the day. I don't have figures available but I'd imagine the Q400 is more expensive to operate than an ATR72 based purely on the size of the aircraft but also on the engine SHP. However, if you now view the CityJet network in total (which hopefully they will do!!), then there is more scope for using the range and speed of the Q400 across some routes currently served by the RJ's. This could result in a drop in the number of jets in the fleet but result in an increase in turboprops.
Bombardier have drawn the curtain on the Q300, the last one rolled off the line last month and is destined for a maritime patrol role (if my memory serves me).
Air France / KLM don't appear to have a "joined up" approach to fleet planning yet so while the Regional and Cityhopper may operate the E-Jet, it isn't a forgone conclusion that WX would go for them.
As usual, these are just my two cents...
All the best,

Q400's
Not heard about the Q400 rumour but there will possibly be some
available from the end of March if they have not already got new
airlines. These will be from Lynx, as Republic are ceasing all Q400
flying and going back to Jets. Lynx crew in general will be offered
positions at Republic.
I believe 5 will be sent back to the Lessor in early April with approx
another 7 to follow.
If Cityjet are not interested I wonder if some other European airlines
will jump at this opportunity.

What kind of benefit are Bombardier claiming for the C-Series on a 200-300nm sector? Seeing as a lot of WX's routes are within this category, it'd be an interesting study. That said I can imagine Bombardier are getting a little concerned at the number of sales so I'm sure their sales team are getting creative with pricing, debt arrangements etc.
Here's a thought though......
If we firstly assume that CityJet are capable (and I believe they are) and secondly that they will be getting the C-Series then it'd be an interesting study to examine the business case for offering C-Series maintenance services under the CityJet / Air France Industries banner. The other variable in this equation is of course the Swiss (Lufthansa) order for 30 C-Series. They will undoubtedly be offering maintenance services to third parties via LHT on this type. The LHT issue withstanding, there may be a viable opportunity there.

Hi Airbus,
I saw that also but I believe the main target audience was the Air Finance conference? I know Bombardier have been extolling the virtues of the C-Series to the leasing community especially considering Bombardier's market forecast predicts that up to 50% of the eventual fleet will be owned by lessors. It's potentially an correct forecast as 40% of the current orders are from a lessor (LCI) but as usual time will tell.
Either way I think WX would be creating a stiff challenge for themselves by going for the C-Series, my own experience of EIS of a new type wouldn't fill me with hope that the C-Series will have a smooth EIS.

In the Sunday Telegraph today;
"Airline CityJet is seeking compensation from London City Airport because "embarrassing" security queues are disrupting thousands of passengers."
CityJet anger over airport queues - Telegraph

Indeed, with the global upturn hopefully pushing through, I wonder how this will affect Cityjet.
Also latest news in LCY is that they opened extra security lanes? Maybe that will decrease waiting times. Benificial to cityjet!
Captain planet and wxjedi, any more news about fleet expansion/replacement?
Cheerio!
