Hi All

Aer Arann have increased their baggage rates this week.

Online €12 per bag per sector
Airport €20 per bag per sector

For two people with two bags who pay at airport its €80 for bags. If you fly from Galway its another €20 for departure levy.

This rate is going to kill the numbers.

Any Thoughts

Aer Arann should drop the baggage charges and make loads of noise about it. Find some other way to gain the revenue. This move will drive their customers towards the LCCs. Charging for baggage is a real sore point with many people.

With Waterford now 01 hr 45 mins approx from Dublin Airport and the new road from Galway to Limerick (bypassing Gort) being opened today, the last thing they need to do is give their customers more reasons to look elsewhere.

TC, just to say that LCCs charge more for baggage (but less for some tickets of course!)

Just reported on the 1800 Meridian SE local TV news that Aer Arann is planning to start services from SEN to WAT & GWY in the spring, so it looks like the move from LTN to SEN is going to happen.

This is bound to have a negative effect, but I think they are between the devil and the deep!

BANG

As I sit here with this feeling - my head is about to explode. In a weird twist I agree with the baggage charges and I'll explain why.

Look at that "Diva's' song on You tube about low cost airlines. Very often the public don't look at the bottom line till they are about to put thru the credit card. They see the topline price. I recently done an analysis of airfares on two regional airlines. 1 included bags and the other not. If RE "reduce" their fares making the bottom line look cheaper maybe.

HOWEVER - for the craic I've picked ORK - STN on the 13th December and back 13th verus RE

FR 60.00 notes.
RE 147.00 notes.

Now even if I take out 40.00 for bags - (now you are at 187.00 return on RE) versus 90.00 on FR...................97.00 euro for a spin down the road.........Hmm ORK is looking more appealing. The public don't really calculate the cost of fuel, tyre wear etc. - It comes down to ORK is 1.5 hours of a spin - I'll save nearly 100.00.

I don't know what it costs to actually carry a bag - but I'd be finding another way to make it look better. RE are now a lost cost operation - they simply can't be - so they've got to win on service. And they can.

WAT/GWY are easy, headacheless operations. no blood pressure as you arrive at the desk, toddle thru security, 100 yards on yer on an airplane - well worth a few quid..........but jaysus 100.00 Quid.........................

I hope I'm wrong.........but Bag Charges RE - then again who are we only paying punters.

Slan

Landing fees and handling fees at Luton verses the cost of extended flying times getting to Southend and the lost income of passengers who won’t follow Aer Arann to the East Coast. So will the airline actually be better off? Makes me think that Eddy Stobart has done a deal to cover any losses.

Can’t help but think that Aer Arann are moving too early and should have waited until the new terminal and station are in place to give the passenger a better first experience of Southend.

I don’t know if things have improved but several years ago I caught the train from London as I was traveling to Southend Airport. On arriving at Southend station there were no signs explaining how to get public transport from the station to the airport.

Looking at Southend’s website now they mention trains services to Southend Victoria and buses that stop by the terminal but there is no mention about whether these busses can be used to get to the station.

If these buses can be used do they think airline passengers really want to hump suitcases on a local bus service that will be stopping every 300 yards with no facilities to carry suitcases?

LTNman

I agree that it would be much better to await the opening of the new terminal before transferring the GWY & WAT flights; the groundwork being currently underway with opening in October 2011 scheduled, but the airport station (SIA) will be open for the commencement of any RE flights in March. It's actually ready to open now but would have very little use so the cost of doing so means it's better to wait a month or two.
So it will not be a question of getting public transport from either Rochford, which is currently the designated airport station, or Southend Victoria.
No, an airport shuttle bus will run the 400 yards between the existing passenger terminal and the airport station. Not as convenient as a 50 yard walk from the new terminal to the station admittedly, but slightly better than the current LTN system between terminal and Parkway I would suggest. Journey time will be about 53 minutes to Liverpool Street or 45 minutes to Stratford with a minimum of 3 trains per hour.

Have they actually confirmed they will transfer the flights or just that they will start flights from SEN?

ORK-DUB

Now that Ryanair are pulling back the ORK-DUB route will AerArann ever be tempted back to it?

As far as I have seen, they have said nothing on transfering WAT/GWY flights to Southend.

On Cork/Dublin, will Ryanair return to this route for the summer or are they completely off the route ? Could make it a good route under the Aer Lingus Regional banner if they are gone.

Ryanair will not leave this route and let some other airline make profit on it

Nuts

For an airline to go on this route is nuts.

Ireland is a rock - and a small one at that. Cork - DUB is now better handled by the M(whatever) road. It's a zip up along - park the car and get on with it. rather than tieing up a couple of mill euro's worth of an aircraft. it's like flying from LHR to LGW - would ye?

RE on Southend to europe will be outstanding.

Keep the faith.

Shamrogue, just to point out that I've thought for many years that a BN2 Islander shuttle between the airports would work out. Was done in the late 70s and worked - M25 was meant to negate it. However, with delays and no train services direct, a shuttle could once again be useful using an economical aircraft like the Islander.

It'd probably be quite a bit faster than the alternatives at rush hour...

But we're serious

Whilst you've a big one on finals we could nip in - handy - 1 mile final kinda stuff - make the first taxi way - and sure ye'd be grand.

We wouldn't even really need a finals, just call base/finals all in one go. We'd manage Mouse Aviation Services new route from LGW to LHR no problem.
