Sorry to quibble WWW, but if you think that by using the term 'a mere millionaire' I meant Ryan was on his uppers, you missed the point. The flotation failure was a disaster for him in other ways - he lost control of a company he had built up over years through hard graft and risk taking. He also lost face in the international business community.

And yet he came back and did it again.

This is another aspect of FR that too many miss. O'Leary is the public face of the company, but Tony Ryan is the real business genius behind it. O'Leary is just a walking publicity stunt on Ryans behalf. It keeps the limelight off him, which he seems to prefer.

www – know I think you’ve hit on the reason Ryan will stay in Eire – nothing to do with AOC’s Aircraft Registration, routes etc – nationalistic pride - for an Irishman to an “important person” he needs to be in Ireland (and I’m not knocking this).
There is also the wonderful Corporate Tax Regime in Eire.

I think I agree with the first part of your last sentence – not sure about the second part.

Am sure that they have people working on “alternative plans” which would include moving Ops – if they didn’t Mr Ryan & MoL would be c**p businessmen and that is one thing I have not heard them accused of.

A pretty concise version of the Tony Ryan story going back to the beginning of GPA can be found in this book:

Ryanair: How a Small Irish Airline Conquered Europe
Siobhan Creaton

It's a rattling good read from the biz point of view. Brings the story up to about a year or so ago. Love or hate Ryanair, it is a remarkable story. You will find it's not just OLeary who made it as successful as it is.

If you are not bothered reading it, Tony Ryan did get down to his last few million when the GPA floatation imploded. But of course now the situation is very different - how many €100million's he has now - who knows?

Yes Roger, a cracking read, and one example of the input of others (which O'Leary stole all the credit for) is the implementation of their website. When their marketing whiz kid, a lady named Caroline Green, convinced O'Leary to release money for an upgraded telephone booking system she didn't tell him that the system she chose had a built-in online booking engine. She hid that because O'Leary had adamantly rejected all attempts to get him to set up website. He proudly boasted that he didn't even own a computer!

Later when it took off (behind his back) and became an almost overnight success - he told the media it was his best idea and the real reason Ryanair was succesful!

For months he also rejected Conor McCarthys pleas to introduce 30 minute turnarounds. When Tony Ryan finally intervened and told him to let McCarthy try it he sneered at McCarthy that he'd fire him when it inevitably failed.
It now forms the backbone of their productivity miracle!

O'Leary is an arse, a charlatan, and a usurper. A mere loud mouth pr**k who got lucky because he had good people around him - especially a committed workforce (whom he ****s on daily).

Can we take that as a vote of no confidence?

The old was it O' Leary or Ryan the genius??

Well, Ryan made the money and MOL crossed his path in life.
MOL is bright and very capable but you need good fortune on the way. I don't mean luck, luck is winning the lottery.
Fortune is trying your best with a plan and it works out.

MOL is very very replaceable, no question. What happens is and it's a bit like politicians, they weave a web around themselves and structure it to support themselves.

Like the well known fact (though not really in the public domain)about the RYR website. Well when your boss hijacks your idea and takes the credit you can't do much.

The guy has talent, no doubt. If you call him thick you disarm your own argument. It's obvious he is bright and a great communicator. But he is no genius.

Much over-rated.

In realative terms, the guy at Aer Arann achieved much much more.

Bullies never like to be exposed for what they are. Mr Hairy Smelly one is now very conspicuous by his silence as he has always been, close to any legal action. Top-class legal advice Leo?

This is an enormous victory for free speech, as a court (an inndependent legal entity? even in Ireland?) will ultimately decide the merits of the pilots case. However, I wouldn't hold my breath that IALPA will get the result they desire and deserve.

Remember the Goss case recently? MOL and some of his sidekicks DOB et al were about to be jailed for contempt of court, so much so that they turned up in court with an overnight bag, but what happened? Did they purge their contempt? No. Was some kind of deal done behind the scenes by the company and the 'most cunning most devious of them all' and passed down to the Judge? Will we ever find out? Unlikely. Did any one of them go to the slammer even for one night - no.

Of course we all accept that the courts are independent of government and government is independent of big business, don't we? And we also believe in fairies at the end of the rainbow and Santa Claus. IALPA's best bet might be to get a judge who has heard some of the numerous cases against Ryanair in the past. Then at least he would know the kind of hairy smelly animal he's dealing with.

Unless we know the full details its not right to assume. What you can be sure about is that IALPA didn't pay 1 cent in legal fees. Ryanair paid it all.
IALPA have publically stated this but didn't dance a jig about it.

Do you really think for 1 second that would be let pass by RYR if it wasn't true.
A bit like the labour court appeal to the high court.

Aghhhhh, sorry but where is it then.
Did the layers have to sedate you Mick to get it through to you that, sorry, we don't have a chance of winning this.

I hope it is so – but am sure we can all name a few countries where it isn’t so.

I also hope that the Ryan guys (inc any gals) get what they want – and want what they get.

Just – please guys don’t bet your house on it – and make a plan to counter anything that could be thrown at you – too many people say “that can’t / won’t happen” and when it does moan / cry or in extreme cases end it all.

I'm sure that, just like any other profession, the judiciary regularly shoot the breeze amongst themselves and exchange juicy little tidbits about cases that appear in their courts. All in strictest confidence of course. Just imagine the conversations over tea and a fig roll (or whatever judges nibble between cases) "You wouldn't believe the lying git I had in front of me yesterday" etc. etc. Given that one High Court judge has found LHC to be "an unreliable witness" ie a liar, and another came close to imprisoning him, I'd say his reputation will preceed him to the Supreme Court, if he chooses to go there. I wouldn't worry about their lordships ànd ladyships - they will know exactly the kind of`hairy smelly animal they will be dealing with.

MOL has used that anecdote about turnarounds against himself - at least he berates his own copious stupidity from time to time. How many other CEOs would have gone to Poland after the "who would want to go to Gdansk" incident, let alone call himself an idiot while doing so and in the process launching a new route network.

At least he will admit to *some* mistakes - some folk won't pretend to even the smallest - do you see the honchos of NW, DL, US, UA, AC etc abasing themselves before the shareholders whose money they lost, while MOL coins it in for his?

It looks like Ryanair haven't gone to the supreme court about this ruling and are now due to appear in the Labour court with IALPA on the 10th of November.
The labour court will then hear both sides and make a binding decision on work practices and dispute resolution procedures. It's been a while coming.
