I passed through Edinburgh as a pax for the first time in a longtime.
What have they done to the place? It doesn't seem to be particularly passenger friendly unless you want to go shopping, and there is nowhere landside to sit and hava cup of coffee and watch the aeroplanes go by - even airside the view out onto the tarmac is becoming more and more restricted by shops. The security checks are not particularly user friendly either.

I did a bit of digging. The number of movements in March at Edi was down by about 6% compared to last March.
There's no single cause. Obviously the loss of Globespan (-200 movements last March) and Delta (-36 movements) played a part, but this was offset by FlyBe (+117 movements), Ryanair (+94 movements) and KLM (+58 movements). Easyjet were the largest airline with a virtually unchanged number of movements, although FlyBe are only just behind now.
Other contributors to the drop were: British Airways (-242), bmi / bmiRegional (-100), Cityflyer (-55), bmiBaby (-65), Jet2 / Channex (-45), Lufthansa (-60) and Aer Lingus (-60).

February was obviously a good month, I believe ATM's were down in

Diverts due tonight
Understand that 2 Qatar flights will be diverting into EDI this evening due to the continuing closure of the London & Manchester airports.
May well be several others as well from other long hauls.

I fear your expectations of airport terminals are as old-fashioned as your user name. BAA's not remotely interested in aeroplanes, only in money. Aeroplanes don't make money, they're only an expensive means of delivering consumers to the tills of shops whose turnover is creamed off by the airport owner.

However, I would agree the erosion of airside views at EDI is disappointing. I also notice the provision of a "relaxation and massage" service, albeit in a less-than-tranquil location underneath speakers blasting out music in the colossal booze shop next door. Perhaps if the security hall was better-managed (EDI security staff constistently have the worst attitude to customers among all BAA facilities, in my experience) pax wouldn't be in need of therapy at the other end.

I cannot think of many (any?) UK airports where this is possible. The biggest missed opportunity on this score is NQY, which has a nice outdoor picnic area whose view of the apron is obscured by clutter for no good reason
try INV you can sit and watch the a/c go past in the cafe just not many

I recently saw an advert that Titan Airways were looking for flight deck and cabin crew for an edinburgh temp contract starting on the 1/6/2010.......
Any ideas as to who they will be operating for or where they will be flying to.

Is there any developement in long haul services from EDI? Rumours were that prehaps Qatar might start something seeing that Emirates went to GLA because their runway was 500ft longer!! Would'nt it have made more sense to to use EDI with more business passengers?
What about Canada? Why does'nt Air Canada put in an appearance seeing that Globespan are no more. So many questions!!

Long Haul
I have heard the same about Qatar however I doubt we will see anything happen this year. They are developing the south east pier to accomodate international traffic so maybe next year we could see some more Long Haul services arriving!

Basic reason Air Canada don't fly to Scotland is that they don't have the right equipment to service a YYZ-Scotland route economically.
B767 and A330 would be a lot of seats to fill, even for a seasonal service, and scheduled long haul carriers aren't necessarily big fans of part-week service.
If they were to add B757 to their fleet they could probably consider YYZ-Scotland.
