Interestingly enough Scottish Avoation. At the time of developing PIK as a major training airfield also owned an airfield at Grangemouth and this was planned and marketed as Central Scotland Airport. Not sure exactly why it never happened but I'm sure weather (fog) was one if the reasons cited. I think you can forget (however sensible it seems) a mew central airport. It would mean fewer services, less competition, higher fares and probably fewer jobs. We have great choice across the central belt and three good airports to choose from. We should be trying to ensure we maximise their use.

Skinflats International
I remember when I first came into the airyplane business in the mid-60s, development of the Skinflats site between Falkirk and Grangemouth was being promoted. Glasgow Corporation were set against it of course as they had just re-developed HMS Sanderling as Glasgow Airport but there was a strong case for it and if I remember correctly Mike Bishop of British Midland was one of the proponents. My ageing grey matter is struggling to put more names in the frame but there were quite a few prominent businessmen of the time involved but unfortunately no money..
I very much doubt that it will now ever happen. With good and soon to be improved surface transport links with the rest of Scotland and NE England (M8/M9/M90 junction on its doorstep, City Bypass close by, and forthcoming tram link with its Cogar rail interchange, Edinburgh is just about as well placed to be "Scotland International" with Glasgow and Prestwick left to fight over the Central Belt to the West and South West of Glasgow.

Ah well I suppose I better keep the day job.
Not so sure if it would mean less services - i would probably say better centralised services with , which i think is very important, increased frequency. So rather than say KLM as an example offering what 4 flights a day between EDI and AMS and 4 a day between GLA-AMS they could offer say 6 a day at the new airport utilising larger or sam size equipment? Business men therefore benefit from increased frequency, the airlines can use perhaps better equipment between cities. London - Scotland would also be another example.
Cost of tickets etc I would suggest would be similar to now - simply driven by market forces - and at any new airport I am sure that EZY,RYR and others would want a slice of the action.
As for 14 Air Canada DC8's at PIK in one day???? Must have been exceptional reason or the rum was good that day. Most I could ever recall seeing were 3.

Was also wondering who will be handling viking airways? Presumably servisair since they seem to get most charter airlines contracts?
And a possible new ground handling company in EDI and GLA

Ryanair has announced today 3 brand new routes from Edinburgh to Faro, Marrakech and Paris (Beauvais) basing a sixth aircraft, as revealed earlier by the local press.
It will see also a boost in frequencies to a number of existing routes.

Norwegian have announced a new route from Stockholm to Edinburgh. Not bookable yet.
Norwegian launches direct flights to London, Edinburgh and Munich from Stockholm
Norwegian continues to expand its base in Stockholm and launches direct flights to London/Gatwick, Edinburgh and Munich, three destinations which are appealing to both business and leisure travellers. The new direct flights will increase Norwegians presence in the Swedish market, as the company is adding an eighth aircraft to the Stockholm base.

Scotland already has a centrally located airport in Edinburgh. Why bow down to petty parochialism
Excellent that Lufthansa are expanding at EDI. I remember when they had a daily GLA-DUS with DLT then GLA-FRA with a B737. Glad that EDI retains a good legacy presence. Good news for EDI.

...seems a little short notice to be allegedly starting flights in one months time and not have announced them and made them available for purchase?
Didn't GSM operate flights to Paphos? What were loads like when they operated the route?

Loads
Here are the loads for last years summer season with GSM from EDI to PFO. All were operated with the B738.
November - 97%
October - 87%
September - 90%
August - 93%
July - 97%
June - 86%
May - 90%
April - 94%
Not that bad tbh. EZY would probably do good on this route!

Well this has now been reported on Cypriot TV (in PFO on hols). It would seem that the Cyprus Tourism Organisation have been involved in the said "new raft of flights" to PFO. They say Easyjet to fly to PFO from EDI twice a week. I certainly hope they do otherwise Ryanair will beat them to it. GSM always had very high loads so no reason why it wouldn't work.
The sooner Easyjet get one of the A320's here at EDI the better for good yielding routes like SSH, FNC, PFO, etc.
Wonder if this apparent new route to PFO will be announced by EZY?

Hi, 1st post here but always interested in reading other people's views on EDI, I'm not totoally sure here but i think Easy have been using the A320 at EDI already, Easyjet tail and just plane white body.. could be totally wrong here thou, as flight path goes right above work place at Pumpherston ( outskirts of Livingston )...
