DERRY/LONDONDERRY
They now serve 10 destinations from NOC; 7, soon to be 6, from LDY.
Reus would've worked really well from Derry, but unfortunately with the exception of Faro, all RYR have done at LDY recently is chop routes and frequencies. I think it's clear that RYR have no interest in expansion at Derry at the minute.
Here's hoping the "other" airline ALPHA ECHO was referring to in his since vanished post this morning, will bring added choice to Derry in tandem with the much anticipated Aer Arann announcement next week.

I wonder what, if anything, is putting RYR off LDY. Larger city than NOC, with a larger catchment area, yet from March only 7x weekly flights to London, compared to NOC's 13 x week to STN, 7 x week to LTN, and 7 x week to LGW. It boggles the mind. I think RYR are smoking a wee bit too much of the 'wackey tabackey' Hopefully there is some truth in the much talked about announcement for next week.
PS: If anyone from RYR do happen to read this. FIX THE TIMETABLING!!! Oh and the people of LDY would be quite partial to the addition of a Malaga service

Agreed, Knock-Ireland West will probably be a FR base before Derry but you got to remember that Ryanair have a lot of aircraft arriving over the next few years. Once they have a few routes established out of a particular airport and they get a reasonable airport deal, its likely they will base an aircraft here. Ryanair have over 100 new aircraft being delivered over the next few years that will need to be based somewhere. I hope that Aer Arann will also base an aircraft in Derry and develop more routes from the northwest as there is a lot of potential here.
By the way, Knock is really the main airport in Connaght as Galway and Sligo airports are quite small so they can attract passengers from all over the province.

A friend who works for a certain local paper was telling me there is a sniff of a rumour that EZY are looking into LDY - LTN or LDY - LGW. Has anyone else heard this? Or does anybody know of another operator moving into LDY with other ambitions? My reporter friend seems to think there could be more than one big announcement next week. I hope there is some truth in this, but as always Im not holding my breath.

That rumour about EZY and LDY has been round since the dawn of time. Would they really operate from LDY as well as BFS and recently BHD? All three airports?
However taking the 1st rumour (Aer Arann to EDI and MAN)
with the 2nd rumour of a 2nd announcement next week
together with the 3rd rumour from the reporter who may after all simply read this forum
and putting that all together with the journal article when the new manager was hired
Airport chief hopes to secure Madrid, Paris routes - Derry Today
where he mentions
and
I can only confirm that there are certainly alot of rumours! Just look at the number of posts in the last few days. I hope we're not all disappointed!

Heard a rumour that Aer Arann are to start flights to Manchester and Edinburgh in the summer

where he mentions
places like Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and, possibly, into one of the business hubs in London like Gatwick or Heathrow
we are discussing this type of route development with two of the main carriers in that market [smaller complementary routes that the big low cost airlines don't fly to - which would seems to rule out EZY]

Regarding EZY at LDY, I think it would work for them on a London route, and lets not forget EZY now have A319 a/c in their fleet, which have less seats than a RYR 738 so places like BRS and GLA would be great for those.
Missed this, can anyone elaborate? The post has indeed vanished as quick as a RYR double daily to STN!

I realise that getting a direct answer on here is almost impossible but would any of you City of (London)Derry fans care to give a guesstimate as to which year the airport will actually post a profit for the first time in it`s history?

If Easyjet did operate any route to LDY we would possible see Ryanair react with a flight (say LGW that is), if it were LGW would most probably prompt a one plane base at LDY... But I just cant see Easyjet setting up a new route to an airport on the Island of Ireland where Ryanair is long well established, it would be just like LGW-NOC/SNN/ORK all over again. And if there is one thing that Easyjet learned there, is that they should avoid such confrontation as it is extremely costly....

Tower Ranger, I can't see LDY posting profits until we see 1 million plus pax going through the doors. Sad, but true. Saying that, we may well see the airport near that figure should EZY pop up the road to us.
EI-BUD, I think an EZY daily LGW would work. RYR would have to put up and shut up as LDY wouldn't tell EZY that they were not allowed in. All will be revealed next week regarding new routes, so we shall wait and see.

Tower: A direct answer:
If any of us were able to see into the future like you ask, we'd spend a quid on a Euromillions lottery ticket, win £85million, turn Aldergone into a car park, then extend the runway at BHD to 5 miles, having bribed a bible-bashing nutter politician (I'm sure there's at least one left even post-Iris), under the proviso that Flybe do a twice daily Gatwick, plus a once daily to an airport of our collective choosing, all from Derry. That do?

There's usually a bit of pre-publicity leaked to the media in these cases, like notification of a press conference or something like that.
That didn't happen in the cases of Alicante or Faro because the routes were launched from there rather than LDY. But this launch (if it happens) is from LDY.
Anyway nothing from the media yet so you'll just have to wait . . . .
Cuthere, you think it won't happen?

Ameila, I have no information either way. It just doesn't fit with me, that an airline that only operates from Derry because of a heavy subsidy, would see the same airport as a place for growth.
Couple that with the fact Aer Arann currently has a fleet of 14 'planes (4 ATR42s, 7 ATR72s, and a handful of Islanders), 4 of which are to be used as Aer Lingus Regional, leaving the rest to operate the current PSO commitments, I have to wonder where will the spare airframes will come from?
Furthermore, it wasn't that long ago that RE were staring down the barrel of bankruptcy. Who knows? Obviously Stewart28 and ALPHA ECHO know some things we don't, but I would've thought strong(er) airlines like BE and EZY would be more able to operate additional routes out of LDY.
I totally agree about the media silence too. Surely there should be some news of new routes getting out. The summer schedules start soon, and you would imagine any new routes would need to be announced soon.
Having said all that, hopefully I'll be made to eat all of the above words with an announcement soon!!!!

Was surprised that we have heard nothing yet, but it's early days of course. Maybe if Stewart28 or ALPHA ECHO are reading this, they could enlighten us with more info if they have any?

Aer Arann have another 4 ATR 72's due to be delivered and will continue to operate flights that are not under the Aer Lingus franchise and non-PSO such as the routes from Cork to Dublin and Belfast, all their routes ex-Waterford and Galway with exception of the Galway-Dublin route.

Sad News
The Belfast Forum finally seems to have divorced into "BHD Belfast City" and "Belfast International Airport - BFS (Aldergrove)".
To those of us who knew "Belfast - 3" it will come as no surprise as it seemed an unhappy marriage, more of an arranged marriage than one of any love between the two parties, small proof perhaps that no one in Belfast actually considers BFS as a Belfast Airport.
Anyway we wish them well as they go their separate ways.
On another note, it looks less likely that there'll be any announcement this week. Cuthere will be glad they didn't hold their breath.
