DERRY/LONDONDERRY
Christ Almighty! I've just had a look for a trip in May and already quite a few days are unavailable. I assume they're sold out! But there's no demand from LDY. None. Zero. Zilch. Anyway. Got a return for a long weekend for £86. When you consider what that includes it's in a par with FR, with the bonus of an evening flight to/from LON.

I think the bmi flight will be a success.
Just had a look at an old confirmation email from April 2014 when myself wife and our 3 year old flew return LDY - STN with Ryanair on a Wed - Sun.
Including a suitcase and reserved seats the whole lot came to £385 return.

Actually they potentially have the opportunity to make LDY
if you look at regional routes that aren't flown from BFS meaning people of the north have to go all the way to BHD there is a real opportunity, for example
EMA
LBA
SOU
ABZ
if people travel all over to get on one of Flybe's 5 flights to LBA or 4 to EMA there is clear demand
On another note will BMI have LDY staff?

They could increase their network from LDY, however that might mean they start charging their "regular" fares. In my experience these can be >£200 rtn.
In answer to your question: yes. They said at the press conference that they would be looking to recruit locally for the base.

Amazing how quickly the Belfast - Isle of Mann flight was restored following the collapse of City Wings. It is now being operated by Eastern Airways just two days after it ceased.
Contrast that with LDY and flights to Dublin, Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands and to a lesser extent Alicante, Faro, Tenerife, Barcelona and Varna that have all been operated from LDY and subsequently lost. Some of those routes had 60-70,000 pax per year.
Could Eastern Airways not be tempted to LDY?

I see Eastern Airways operate from Humberside and Durham Tees Valley both of which have fewer passengers than LDY and from Norwich which isn't much bigger than LDY was at its peak.
The rapidity at which the Isle of Man services were restored was almost entirely down to their government. Nothing to do with anyone in NI. As for Eastern. They are a business airline focusing on oil routes. Hence they charge a fortune to fly from places like Humberside and Teesside to Aberdeen.
Their model would NOT suit LDY.

Hopefully they will. If sales are truly going well they may consider adding other unserved routes, such as Birmingham which springs to mind. Keep in mind BMI are the opposite of a low cost airline and fares will be expensive, limiting the market.
