Air Mauritius little incident

I was on the flight from Mauritius to Perth on the 24th of february.
I don't know if you guys heard the story or not but there it is:
Everything started fine, we had to wait 30 mins because they didn't have two jeppesen for australia then add to wait another 30 mins because they was a thunderstorm. so we finally took off about 1h30 behind. but we will say that's not a big drama.
I had the chance to be in the cockpit for the flight. As we pass i think about 10000ft i went back to my seat as i was walking back all my friends asked me what was going on with the a/c i said nothing everything is fine. they said no the a/c is turning n going back to mauritius. there was a bit of panic cause no one understand what was going on. me too. The captain finally after 5-10 mins told us that he had to switch one engine off and that we are heading back. Why didn't he say so before or simply turn off the tv. so he dump 40 t of fuel n there we were going back to mauritius. at the airport mk told us that at 6 pm (3hrs later) that we will know what going on. At 6pm they said that we were leaving at 8pm at 8pm they told us we will leave at 10pm at 10pm they told us that we will leave at 11.30pm finally at 12pm they said that we are not going at all and that they will send us to an hotel. We arrive at the hotel at 2am and had to leave the next morning at 9am. Very nice company very well organised . the second flight was finally the good one.

For the record I should point out that our captain has frequently posted on how MK are duffing it and how they are making such a mistake in not hiring him. He has, in my opinion, a chip on his shoulder the size of Le Morne Brabant. But that's only my opinion.

"Finally after 5-10 minutes" the captain told them that he'd shut an engine down and that they were going back to Mauritius. How long do you think it takes to identify that an engine needs to be shut down, complete the necessary drill actions, call the Company, speak to the Chief Hostie sonny? Do you think there's a big switch for the "TV" on the overhead panel? Or maybe that one of the actions in the engine shutdown checklist is to switch off the Airshow?

Please, if the crew involved read this posting and can in any way remember who the loser was who they made the unfortunate decision to allow to sit in the cockpit then get onto some People That Count, advise them of the potential liability that this man would pose as a member of staff and save yourself a whole lot of trouble.

And well done for handling the situation, to all accounts, by the book.

Rant Over.

I don`t see what the big deal is. They had to shut down one engine, dump the fuel... they got back in one peace. Nice job from the part of the flight crew.

And everybody knows that if you fly around the world a lot this things happen. It happened to me numerous times that I had to spend the night in a hotel to wait for another flight. And I`m propably not the only one.
If this was comming from a pax I wouldn`t say nothing, but form a aviation pro, and on Pprune. Come on Buddy!Chill out!

Hey Captain you sound like one of these experts that hang around airports with a walkie talky listening to aviation jargon
Get a life mate, and leave it to the experts with the TV SWITCHES

Well done... The cold captain can now consider himself moderated.
Do the Captain thinks its all about Sep 11 that crews do not allow pax on jumpseats. A lot of us like nothing more than a true enthusiast to join us. But when it comes to little snips that does not appreciate nor respect the operating crew, well then. Keep the door lock and spoil it for everybody.

One day, which I doubt, you will also spend a night or two writing reports defending your actions whilst having the pax and company's best interests at heart just because a little **&^%% had to make some very uninformed chirps about the crew and their actions.

In stead of personally inform and brief you, they did their jobs. Once their tasks were completed, they informed all the pax, yes you too. Thus assuring you the opportunity to travel by air again, sommer the very next day.

Lucky you.

I will reply to Icaptain25's thread tonight. It certainly is necessary that the facts be given.

I feel that it is necessary to present the facts, because it appears as though the person who started the thread is trying to damage Air Mauritius' image unnecessarily. The facts will hopefully show that.

The Jepps:

Part of the Cockpit Safety Check is to ensure that all documentation required for the flight is onboard and available for the flight at hand.

This aircraft, according to the aircraft rotation at hand would have been to CDG twice, JHB & DBN once and it had just returned from ZRH prior to the flight to PER - i.e. in the previous 6 days.

Yes the Doc's section should have ensured that the Jepps were onboard, but the crew identified the omission and had it corrected.

Previous crews would not have looked for the presence of Australia Jepps, nor were they (the Austarlia Jepps) required to be onboard for the flights that took place during the previous 6 days.

The Thunderstorm:

Probably one of the worst to have hit Plaisance for many years. Certainly right up there with some of the worst to be found in the Johannesburg and Welkom area. So intense was the storm that at one stage there was a funnel developing at the base of the cloud on the final approach path for Runway 14. Communications were disrupted at the airport and an inbound B767 eventually diverted to RUN during this storm. A sound decision by the crew to delay the departure to PER?

The Engine Shutdown:

The need for the engine shut down in flight was due to a loss of oil pressure. ECAM actions would have taken the crew through the ENG OIL LO PR emergency procedures, followed by the ENG SHUT DOWN procedure. The return to MRU would have furthermore required the crew to discuss the need to jettison fuel to ensure a normal weight landing. Once the decision had been made the QRH FUEL JETTISON procedure would have read and the jettison initiated. During all this as 4HP has pointed out there would have been communications with the tower, operations, and the Senior Flight Purser. So if it took the Captain 5-10 mins to announce to the passengers that an engine had to be shut down and that a return to MRU was required, was in fact very quick indeed.

For the record, CFM was consulted and the source of the oil pressure drop rectified. They (CFM) then cleared the engine for further flight after due consultation with the Engineering Section. The same aircraft departed for PER the next day and has been fully utilised on the line without any further problems.

Communication with passengers thereafter:

A return like this is a difficult time for what in reality is a small airline. Crew did reach FDP limits, and the crew schedulers had to satisfy the needs for other delayed flights as well. I assume that it was decided that to delay the PER flight till the next morning was the best practical solution to the problems at hand.

I cannot make comment on whether the passengers could have been taken to the hotels earlier.

Thank you PP, it is nice to have the full facts detailed so people are not jumping to conclusion. As your facts would point out MK conducted itself in a manner which would render it a very good operation regardless of size.
Icaptain25, I can only assume you are a pilot and if so, you would have heard of the pnemonic ANC(Aviate, Navigate, Communicate). It's obvious in a situation as such the crew would have been way too busy as pointed out by PP, to liaise with the pax. It appears the crew did the job they are trained to do and my hat goes off to them. In regards to letting the pax know what was happening, I'm not sure about the MK SOP but in ours it does say when time permits.
The thunderstorm is not even an issue. This happens in a lot of places around the world and delaying the departure is inevitable. From my experience, most pax understand this and usually are more than happy to sit on the ground whilst the storms passes thru.
A situation like this can be very delicate for a small airline and it doesn't help when people start jumping to conclusions. So a big thank you to PP for letting everyone know what happened, otherwise rumours can be damaging to ones reputation.

It seems fairly obvious to me that this person has little in depth knowledge about airlines and airline flying. The reply by PP shows crew and airline procedures that were followed and ensured that a safe flight took place albeit with a few curved balls thrown in. That is what the passengers pay for! In good faith crews invite aviation enthusiasts up to the front office. It would be a pity if this should stop because most of us promote aviation with a passion. "Richard Craniums" like 1captain who take advantage of the hospitality then promptly go out and attempt to trash the crew/airline deserve to be kicked out into the cold!

I had the privilage of being in the cockpit of the MK A319 exactly a year ago, from CPT to MUR and later back again.

I have nothing but respect for the professional airmanship the aircrew displayed, but then I am just an armchair pilot ...

Oxford Dictionary - criticize v to find fault (with); to examine critically; to express judgements.

"I wasn't critising the company or the pilot"

Regarding the crew: "Why didn't he say so before or simply..........."

Regarding the company "Very nice company very well organised "

Captain, your whole post:

a.) Finds fault

b.) Examines critically

c.) Expresses judgement

on both the crew's and the company's actions.

You didn't catch me on a bad day; you made it a bad day. (For a very short time.)

There will be no further purpose keeping this tread open. I'm reluctantly closing it and IMHO the faster it slips off the bottom of the page, the better.

And have a nice day.
