Guys,

You're under the assumption that arik seeks to make a profit in it's operation. I'm of the opinion that arik has no plans of ever making a profit. As some of you who are ex-staffers know, the share incompetence of some "ogas" is beyond human comprehension. Plus Big J and mini-me are another story altogether.
Telling the truth has never been a strong point of Big J. He knew before the first arik flight operated to LHR that they operate on a slot system. He knew other carriers pay millions just to operate into this airport, but he is Big J, he has to circumvent all known conventions.
Good luck to him in his latest escapade.

The politics of business...

I have been away for just about 6 years now, and it's good to see that Nigeria and its people, some of them anyway, is and are just about the way I remember it and them.

The cruel and rapacious colonial masters are forcing Nigerians to fly BA with excess baggage, charging them for that, and then they are forcing them to buy lots of duty-free during the flight and charging them for that too! Perhaps some Nigerian patriot should petition the Nigerian government (always making with the jokes, here) to end this situation. Free excess baggage and free, not just duty-free tat, too from BA! Get General Babangida to explain how that is just 'reparations for slavery.'

So, Arik did have the slots they wanted, but the price was too high? Then they could get cheap slots but not at the right times (which is why they were cheap slots)? What is it they want now, the LHR slots they want, but at the price they are willing to pay? The way to get that is to have the Nigerian government mess BA around, I suppose, which is a funny way to do business.

Who else operates to Lagos these days, from a major European airport?

Apart from the two carrying the union jack, you can get to Lagos from Europe with:
Air France - Paris CDG
KLM - Amsterdam
Iberia - Madrid
Lufthansa - Frankfurt
Turkish Airlines - Istanbul

NDB17 has got it quite right. Arik is definitely not trying to make a profit with its long haul flights. It's all about the prestige, which is probably why Mr. J. doesn't like to use LGW as it is clearly much less prestigious to fly to this second class airport. Same goes for the New York route where they use JFK with an average of 40 pax or so per flight...

"This action to restrict BA will end in tears for Arik.

I heard already UK suppliers to Arik are now demanding overdue bills paid immediately and any new transactions cash up front. They are worried UK Govt. will cancel the BASA and stop Arik operating into UK and then move to ban them from EU...

BA and VS can make money on other routes. Arik only makes money on London and that is in peak seasons only.

Believe me Arik needs London much more than BA / VS need LOS or ABV. Nigerians will suffer in the short and long term with higher fares and $$$$$$$$$$ spent on further bailouts. "

Are you serious. Are they serious. All that will do is escalate the whole issue believe me, that is not the way to go about the current palava my friend. This is the wrong mentality.

Yes it's true, the mentality of the suppliers is 'we want to get paid what we are owed before Arik disappear'
Can't really blame them after B3 and VK left huge debts behind them unpaid when they pulled out of UK.

Arik are a different company of course, they pay bills on time, wages on time and their taxes on time - well... in JIA's world of BS they do

I can't see the UK Govt. giving in to this as it creates a precedent at LHR re: slots - who is next DL / UA using US Govt. influence? Slots at LHR are allocated under EU directives, so any complaint from and EU airline will be serious for Arik and any future plans. I can't see BA giving in either as they are part of IAG with Willie Walsh as CEO, a smarter man than JIA who never backs down. It wouldn't surprise me if BA make even more money from just 3 flights and IAG ramp up IB operations into LOS and make even more money.

The second class airport that is LGW, is very nice - have you seen the North Terminal lately - and is also run by a company headed by a Nigerian - surely JIA can cut a deal there? Arik don't need the connectivity of LHR as they don't have interline and with this sort of behaviour never will. Let alone taking into account the huge cost involved in developing interline e-ticket compatibility with other airlines, which Arik won't pay.

Looks like Christmas will be cancelled for thousands of Nigerians who wanted to travel as usual in December / January - but won't be able to afford the higher fares that will surely follow. Well done FG.

Classic case of the inmates running the asylum.

Moronic minister plus a megalomaniac joker, and you have the stupidity you see today.

Anyway we forgot to celebrate the 5th anniversary, did anyone get the invite to the event at claridges ? Mine must have got lost in the post.

As for Mr J, his rant against the colonial uk govt and BA, will this mean he will now sell his pad in weybridge in disgust at his treatment ? This could fund buying slots at LHR !

Quite a few of the many BA crews I've met here in LOS the past few years certainly will not be upset about current developments...

I understand that it has had the lowest bid rate for years now - low credit, an overnight in LOS and 300+ passengers with attitude...

More interesting will be to see if, perhaps, IAG try to outflank the politicos by changing their service with the A319 ex MAD to something a little bigger and, it needs to be said, a little more suitable for the overnight slog back up to Europe...

300 plus pax with attitude !!, makes me think of a flight I had from Lagos to the U.K, BA or Virgin a few years ago but Ill always remember walking up the isle exiting the AC, it was trashed, I couldn't believe the state of the place, like a bomb had gone off in the place. no wonder its a low bid.

Reveilo you forgot Alitalia from Rome Fiume! So yeah chucks I gues Nigerians still have a couple of options, the best one being Air France, if they don't mind a little stopover in a Paris! AF operates a 777-300ER on the route from CDG to LOS, with continuation to PHC.

Somebody tell the Princess...

You don't 'lament at' anything. You can 'lament,' or if you want to waste some words you can 'lament over,' but 'at' you do not lament.

So, the British High Commissioner came crawling into Her Royal Highness's office to tear his shirt and throw some dirt on his head, when she graciously relented in her relentless quest to make aviation the driver for peace and progress and faith and unity? Damn! She sure is a Princess! And I bet she wears pointy shoes, too!

Jobs have been advertised for weeks, must have made a lasting impression ! How do you commercial with no money ?

There's nearly 30 jobs being advertised and some critical ones that should be filled to comply with the regulatory authorities. Bet they wouldn't pass IATA audit now !

Thank goodness THOSE guys got canned. That's what's been holding up Arik all along.

Nothing but smooth sailing ahead.... what is that lump poking up through the water ahead?
