The most useful gen I was ever given in my early flying career (other than, keep some speed on the clock and altitude under my butt), was that as a career pilot I must never expect to be paid any more than what the present market thought I was worth or to be treated any better than that. And it has always held true throughout my 23 years of flying.
As a pilot with Emirates now approaching 10 years of service I have never expected anything different. I know that the present climate is depressing for those who were maybe expecting more, however the writing has been on the wall for many years now and I'm sure they knew it when they joined. I certainly briefed many of my colleagues before they joined and they were and still are happy to be part of the company even if not all their expectations have materialised, and some of them are extremely experienced pilots.
I am starting to get fed up with sitting next to people(not many) who continually tell you how experienced and wonderful they are, normally within the first 10min of having got into the crew transport, and then proceed to cock up the rest of the flight horribly and the worst part, they dont even seem to realise they are messing things up. All the good operators I fly with and some of them with enormous experience are only too happy to sit quietly while doing the job professionally, and wait their time after all it doesn't and won't take long in our company anyway.
The signs that the market is starting to turn in the favour of pilots are appearing, and I dont think we are far off being able to enjoy a "Pilots Market" once again, so let's be patient and everyone will I'm sure be reaping the benefits in the near future. Some of the pointless, frustrated comments and arguments appearing on this forum only serve to degrade our fine profession further which is just what the jam stealers love to see.

Anotherpost75 As you rightly suggest I doubt if there will be any clamouring at EK's door by ex A340 Captains in SQ,nothing to do with the final tranche of Bonus(Dec7th) or the 13months Salary Jan7th which would be in the Bank by the time one's 3 months notice had been served, but for the reasons you quite rightly stated namely that why swop one Airlines "pittance" (SQ) for another Airlines "pittance" (EK)??
As again having been to Singapore recently you have heard first hand how these Armchair Generals in SQ are hellbent in reducing the T & C you seem to see exactly the same thing happening in EK,so it is better to stay on the basis of being with " the Devil you know rather than the Devil you don't know!!"
I thought initially EK were looking for short term Contract Captains hence my initial interest but as they are permanent and on the EK Salary Scales then there is point in my case.

Most of the ex-pat captains I know here in SQ (and I know a lot of them) couldn’t even be bothered making an application to EK. Those who half-heartedly did so soon lost interest when the novelty of a possible escape vehicle from SQ had worn off. Reason? You bet – the very poor package offered by EK.
Another interesting development, for all you bean-counting airline managing “experts” out there, is that to a man (remember, no girls allowed here) they consider that EK is past it and is now run by the same brand of low caliber, main chance, deadbeat management as SIA, who don’t give a hoot about the troops, are incapable of giving any kind of lead other than that spelt out in the Boys Big Book of Leadership and who are utterly perplexed by the concept of trust and loyalty engendered in the masses by a management’s consistent and exemplary behavior, but who instead, look merely to arrange the death of the industry by a thousand salami cuts thus maintaining a self styled orthodoxy in the modern creed of airline management.
Even more novel is that those senior captains in a financial position to consider it are now looking to leave the industry altogether, before age sixty, rather than continue a working life of loathing and resentment towards their employers (with the corollary flight safety implications) as represented by their chiseling, weasel wordsmith, wunderkind management satraps and these industry veterans would certainly never entertain the idea, just for the sake of continued flying, of jumping from the SQ frying pan to the fire that a move to EK would represent.

Like you I could not be bothered even applying for this job despite being highly qualified on A340 and experienced with all of EK's routes.
I saw on the Far East thread that some CAL A340 guys were applying but doubt whether when it comes to it they will be bothered going through all the rigmarole of moving to Dubai and having perhaps antagonistic training Captains breathing all over them. Remember the problems with ASL and Cathay a few years ago when for purely political reasons in a lot of cases good Captains failed to get checked out on the 747-200 freighter???

Had another run through SIN recently and a number of the SQ guys mentioned that, out of curiosity, they had applied to EK for DE positions via the website. They all received e-mail acknowledgments but since then nothing, despite meeting the EK experience requirements.
Has EK management just been on a fishing trip to gauge the DE captain market or were they serious from the start but have been put off recently by their benefit package being so poorly received?
