Not too sure what deal you've struck out with SQ or SQcargo. But I'm with SQ and I have unlimited ID85 i.e. 85% off and then unlimited ID90 after 10 years of service.
The only limited tickets would be the the "previlage travel a.k.a. free tickets" which is dependant on the number of kids I have. Max of 2 kids.

Just to make it clear, I got the Sia Cargo job offer for a date of joining in November.
I'm already out of the bankrupt company and got another job offer, this time on my country flying small jets.
So techincally I'm out of a job, but got 2 job offers to choose from.
Millerscourt, my home base would be Los Angeles and I would not take my kids with me, so no school on Singapore. No car either, so no expenses on that.
I understand that this is not the perfect job, with the rosters issues and all the positioning, but the money is not bad and in 5 years I would be B744 rated, with some money on the bank (hopefully).
Anyway, thanks for your insights.

Phil, MC, Bananasx2.......you guys just made me a bit nervous. I have been offered to start with SIAC in november as an FO.
IF I come in to SIN....I expect to bring the whole "package"(wife, kids, etc)
Even though there is a bit of bickering...the job still sounds better than my present one!

Serious Flyer.....
Just wanted to make sure you realize you will be based in SIN! For Cargo there are no foreign bases. There is no bidding system and you can request a specific COP every 3 months. I just hope you were told that during your interview.
You might think of commuting, but it will be very difficult!

Cars are not that expensive anymore. You can get a new one for about 70000. It will be worth about half of that after four years which means about 700 per month. Add 100 for road tax, another 150 for insurance and then 200 for gas and you get a total cost of about 1150.
If you have children that needs to be driven around a lot you'll probably spend about 400 on taxis so spending 750 extra for having the freedom a car gives you is very reasonable.
But of course, don't even think of buing that M5

I was given the COPs in the interview, and in there I saw many layovers at LA, so I assume I could see my family regularly.
I know it is going to be tough times for me and my family, but you have to pay a certain price to get some things.

Thanks for the car info, what about learning to drive on the "goofy" side of the road? (Not my original side) Surely this being Singapore there is no easy licence conversion. The last place we lived and worked exchanged licences with minimal fuss, although it took all bloody day! Anyone have experiences here about getting the priviledge? Thanks

If you get your Singapore license within a year from moving there it's quite easy.
You register with a driving school and do a multiple choice test of 50 questions. Not more than three wrong answers and your done. To prepare you can buy a book with hundreds of q&a. If you learn those you should be OK.
Total cost not more than 100SGD.
Driving on the "wrong" side is no problem at all here. There's always a lot of other cars on the road so just follow them...

F Dolarhyde Re Cars in Sin. Personally I consider $70,000 expensive for a small family saloon also of course for new Pilots joining SQ finding that sum (or the payments) along with the Bank Guarantee and set up costs plus all other costs such as school fees in advance whilst on a lower salary until final line check would be quite onerous especially for a F/O. When I first joined SQ I seem to remember having to shell out money all the time initially and that was without ever having a car myself in Sin.

Expensive or not depends a lot on the price of cars in your home country. Just take a look at Denmark.
I agree with you that one shouldn't get a car the first thing coming to Singapore. But when you've settled in, paid all the guarantees, been checked out and got a feeling for your family's expenses, then you'll probably see that paying for a car is ok. The very low income tax certainly helps.
In the end you should let your wife decide, if she won't drive then there's no use buying it since you spend 16-20 days away every month.
Just don't use your horn, it's illegal... of course...

So, no serious efforts to address the complaints of SQC pilots,I understand . Even the perrenial optimists are showing some cracks !

Not only willing to move. From the begginnig of the 2006 fifteen pilots left the company, and some chaps are going to move out in short future.
We can not compare lifestyle or rostering to the mainlaine guys, and mainline chaps shouldn't argue here. From my expirience, I'm still flying not more than 30h and paxing 50 h or above, still worse, my roster takes me about 3 weeks out of Singapore every months. I'm not complaining, I'm considering to move out.

You're correct, KAL is looking, but Asiana is also looking for LHR/FRA Captains, in fact, that's where a few have gone too. If your desire is to be based in the EU, there are several other options.
If you have any time on an Airbus or 737, there are countless positions available and the $$ and benefits are all above SQ (mainline and cargo). The KAL/Asiana package in general is equal to or better than SQ. It just depends on what you're looking for.

If I had Warden's roster I'd be ready to move as well. Luckily, I don't.
I'm still averaging 50 H per month flying. Positioning hours? Have no clue, since I don't get paid for it I don't keep track. If I'm in First I enjoy it, and the few times I'm in the back I just endure it. And even better, I rarely spend more than 18 days a month away from Singapore.
No, I don't request trips with lots of hours, all my requests are done for familyreasons and are usually the ones with low hours.
If it's true that 15 pilots have left the company this year I'll be very happy. If it continues like that then we probably are in for an even better package soon.
The advantage SIAC has is that it's based in Singapore. Who want's to live in Korea or Taiwan? Commute? No way, I wan't a life. Based in Europe? Taxes, taxes taxes...
Give me ID90:s and 42 days of leave and I'll probably stay with SIAC till the end. I live a very nice life with the salary they pay me (ca 225 K per year after taxes) and I really enjoy it here. Nice destinations with long layovers, friendly collegues and a great aircraft.

Now THAT"S what I'm talkin about! I have been trying to come up with a way to emphasize what's fine about this job and Mr. "Hyde" has put it down here. Yes it's still not perfect but if I knew where that job was, I would have tried to get that job instead of this one. The one I had before this was OK and the place we lived was great...(Still hear about it from the family) but the cost of livivng was spiralling out of control. Here it's under control. At any rate, I take the same attitude as others and enjoy what I do and take the not so good with the good. I spoke with an old colleague from my previous job and it's a nightmare of old tired aircraft and only doing enough "legal" mtce to keep them in action. No Thanks...This will do well enough for now. Now if only "double B's" money wishes would come true!
