Flight level 100, 200 etc is an ICAO variation in the UK. When UK ATC issue a heading not ending in a '5', they will say 'degrees' to avoid confusion with any flight level clearance.

BUT that is by no means what VS work to. It is highly dependant on routes and trip patterns.

All the destinations we go to in the 747-400 are so used to our clean speed on departure that we don't even bother to get clearance. Same applies to any "heavy" at any airfield that is used to them.

Thanks Lax, I fly a 747 400, yes, I try to mentally rehearse the "STOP!" as we roll on every take off, but it does help that we practice in the simulator every 6 months too, as do all airline guys.
