The problem is your external hard drive is formatted to FAT32 which has a maximum file size of 4gig. What you need to do is format it as NTFS and that will fix your problem.

The colour coding shouldn't make all that much difference if you are wiring 2 wall sockets one at each end of the cable. As long as you wire both the same. Red in pin 1, blue in pin 2 and so forth....
