Blue Thunder Linkage

I am watching the movie Blue Thunder. In it is a scene where a split pin in the engine compartment of a B206 is removed and the bolt lets go during a flight causing the turbine to fail. Can someone please tell me what that linkage controls?

Split Pin Missing from Blue Thunder Linkage

Can we see the clip anywhere - the film clip that is, not the safety clip.....?

If I remember the film correctly,(its been a while since I saw it) I think I know the scene you refer to, its the governor linkage that they loosen the nuts on.

I think it was the Governor to the FCU linkage. Been a long time since I saw the film but it stood out when I did the conversion on to the type.

If I hear a posh english bloke in the hangar nowdays i always double check it before flying....

Factual errors: Cochran sabotages Murphy's Bell jet ranger by removing the cotter pin and loosening the nut on the throttle-control linkage bolt so it can slip out. Aviation bolts are always installed head-end up as a safety precaution to keep the bolt in place should the nut come off.

Which should only cause the N2 to run down to the lower end of the governed range.

Would have no effect at all, as the the lever on the FCU is sprung-loaded to hold it in the full open position.

Films eh? Never let the truth get in the way of a good story...........

Maybe it's me that should get out more.

...and if the engine of a 206 was vibrating as badly as it did in Blue Chunder, then he had some more serious issues than an N2 rundown. (Wink) Catch you later!

There is another one not mentioned in the goofs. After being shot at in the junk yard scene they end up with a bullet hole in the side of the fuselage. What pilot would continue on and complete their patrol after that. you would be landing at the first opportunity to check for damage and finding a different chopper to finish the patrol in.

Yes Oogle, it's a movie. I just answered the question at the beginning of the thread.

If they made movies like this one factually correct, there would be little appeal for the film-going masses as they wouldn't understand most of what's going on. The filmies won't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The most cringeworthy helicopter sequence I've seen was the 355 hacking its way through the market at about 10 knots and 40 degrees nose down in the Bond film.

And I'm the Hollywood Sound guy. I'm sitting here on my megayacht in the Med because I have only ONE tape and it's of a Bell 47 which I recorded in about 1950. I have sold it to every movie made with a helicopter in it since!



If the governor bolt fell out the N2 would stay where it was unless you changed the collective setting where it would underspeed on increase and overspeed on decrease.

Wasn't there a thread here a few months ago saying Hollywood are doing a re-make? To reflect that the rotary world is no longer male dominated and that we are all PC+ equal oppotunities employers I think it should be crewed by Sienna Miller and possibly Sandra Bullock.

I do remember that scene now..... "Grab your ankles and kiss your arse goodbye". I think thats what Airhostesses are wanting to tell us during those pre takeoff safety briefs...
Also I would be curious to know what expense the producers went to to modify that Gazelle and be able to operate it above the city in the way that they did, and wether that machine is still floating (or flying) around somewhere.
I could certainly use that "whisper mode" to great advantage too......

I just noticed this the other day, if you look closely at the formation flight with blue thunder and the jetranger, both actors are actually sitting in the back of the 206, pretty impressive flying considering where they are sitting hey....

It amazes me the lack of knowledge some people have of the machines they fly......
For future reference oxi the linear actuator is attatched to the govenor.
What do you think causes the change in rpm when you press that beep switch??? The linear actuator moves the control arm on the govenor which in turn sends little messages to the fuel control to adjust the amount of fuel it delivers to the engine to slow or speed up.... Put simply!!!!
If the bolt fell out of the control arm you could either have an overspeed or underspeed depending on which way the arm moved....it is not spring loaded like the FCU ,but does not require much force to move so with normal vibration it would probably move one way or the other.

That could be a mockup - parts of it are more rusty than you would expect from an aircraft construction - look at the skids in particular
