Sorry BOAC if I have confused you. My computer (Toshiba) does not offer the option of F8 at boot but another route via several of the function keys. Anyway, it is in the safe mode ie, "Safe Mode" displayed in all four corners and the icons about 3 times bigger with a much poorer resolution. I am certain that it is in the safe mode. So I try to delete the files in exactly the same way as I would in normal mode ie, find the folder, open it and then delete. This gave me the same result "Cyclic redundancy" unable to delete.
Keef, don't have one sadly but I have tried via the C prompt in accessories to get into the DOS. That's easy but sadly I know longer remember how to get to directory and subsequently also don't know how to delete it. Vague memory seems to remember cd:/c:dir but I have tried all the variations and

Born to Fly, Tried that, I put FSX on on the 26 Dec 06 (Xmas Present) and done a system restore before that but to no avail.

I am certain now that if I want to kill whatever! Then drastic actions are called for ie, format c, but before I do that I have to find out all the originals and more importantly the license keys to make them work. Sadly like most that is not as easy as it seems. Like most I started off with the best intentions keeping everything filed but over the years and 2 adult (kids) doing whatever they want that just might not be as easy as it sounds.

Blacksheep came up with something that might help here but I have no idea how to do it or with what consequences.

Thanks everybody for your time

Thanks for the clarification. Before you wipe everything worth a read here, about half-way down in the 'delete file' bit.

If you have not run it yet, run chkdsk - should be accessible via 'My Computer', rt click the drive, select 'properties'/'Tools'/'Check now' - and I would suggest running it with the 2 Check options unchecked first to see what you get. Then if you tick both options it should (hopefully) sort out any errors.

I owe you a beer BOAC thank you so much. Ran the check disk in exactly the way you said, unchecked first, it identified the files as bad sectors. I checked the boxes and it did what it was supposed too. GOT RID of them. I am delighted and so is the computer. Again BOAC that you so much for your time and knowledge. The article was very interesting too and I will store it in the memory banks for future. Regards
Steve

Glad to hear you got it all worked out. Keep an eye on your hard disk if it is starting to display bad sectors as it maybe a warning that it is on the way out. Keep checking it on a regular basis for a while to make sure no more develop and keep your data backed up just in case. it is always good news when this forum helps solve another problem, good work BOAC.
