From what I read from someone stationed on Diego Garcia (where the event took place) the a/c was fine and didn't have any major structural damage

Why not, like Pearl Harbour, use CGI aircraft?

There is a website,(here) (http://www.angel.ne.jp/~tochy/) of merlin engined a/c- simply keep all of the acting parts, but change the a/c with CG...
