I flew a couple of HP R22's , compared with the Beta II they seemed to be nose heavy and needed sligtly different control , with the stick seemeing to be needing to be pulled back more just for hover taxiing, plus none of the two I flew had a rotor brake levers.

Regarding the rotor brake, I suspect they can be retro-fitted, as the only HP I've ever flown (and I flew it exactly once) had one.

does an R22 have pitch trim?

Not really. There is a bungee "trim" that you engage in "high speed" flight (over about 80 knots) that takes out some of the sideways stick force, but there's no trim that you can use to null out stick forces. It's a pretty light stick, so you don't really need it...

Agree with Paul.

Peter, obviously, with HP, the forward GC is more felt in the aft cyclic in hover..

I've trained in both, over 200 hours R22 now, incl bunch of solo flying. HP is very nice for lateral CG flying solo, as well, obviously left skid toe bit low two up, as I fly it with instructor.

HP has more power than Beta. It's not just the weight of fuel that reduces Beta II's performance. Also picking up BII solo on full tanks is bit tricky, like backwards slope, with the extra mass aft of mast.

As mentioned, no aux tank means easier view of flex plate and push-pull rods and their ends.

bungee 'sissy trim' is good for long XC trips, reduces wrist fatigue, instead of pulling the cyclic to right in cruise, one has to apply slight pressure to the left instead, resting hand/wrist against the leg/knee.

Looking at getting back in an R22 after 4 years! Any tips?

Do all the variations have carb heat?

Take it slowly, regardless of how much previous experience you have.

Do all the variations have carb heat?
Yes

Question Robinson R22 HP - worth rebuilding ?

I have a time expired R22 HP (1980) - is it worth having it rebuilt ?
I'm unsure if there is a market out there for the HP, either to sell or lease ?

It's due the big one, tailcone, tail rotor blades etc - needs new doors and interior.

Any advice on this one, greatly appreciated

Use it as a gate Guardian, unless you like bog standard antiques.

I would bolt it onto an old car chassis and turn it into a 'novelty' car, hire it out for weddings etc. Like this sort of thing.

Maybe get a flight school to "sponsor" it as you drive around town.

Just make sure they pay up front.

I also would have thought that they can be rebuilt as Beta, but maybe that's a dodgy Aussie trick???

Depends if you are going to use it yourself after rebuild. Most flying schools are dead due to the recession so trying to get some revenue back through leasing it to a school are nil in the UK.

There are a few really nice rebuilt R22 Beta2s that have been on the market for over a year, and reduced to 120K and still cant sell! Tells you the state of the market.

I think this quote is unduly negative and depressing, anecdotal evidence tells me that things are not that bad in the south east at least and that leaseback is still an option with some schools.

leaseback

Camp Freddie,

you are right to have a positive attitude and I agree there is still work out there for flying schools and leaseback options for a R22 for example are still available.

If anyone wants to lease back an R22 to the South south west part of the UK then please PM me.

Yes flight schools are generally finding it more difficult but those that have fallen may have had other issues that did not help the situation. Unfortunately FASTS at Thruxton fell foul to circumstances beyond their control.

Happy Christmas all and let's hope for a good 2012.

Not being negative at all, just reflecting on the state of the schools north of watford gap including well established schools in Scotland.

A lot of operators are offering R44s at very low rates to try and get the hours flown off before the 12yrs/2200hrs rebuild is due.

Lets hope things improve in the economy, and people start to fly again. Good for the schools. Flying Instructors, Maintainance etc etc.

Happy New Year to All!

rebuild an HP? I would, and I would also highly value a serviceable firewall and structure which makes a serviceable data plate. So easy for them to be non rebuildable nowadays.

Highest hour R22??

I am currently flying an R22 serial number 7 if I am not mistaken. The ship has just over 9800 hours on it, which got me wondering - does anyone know of a higher hour ship?
