Challenging windy conditions at Blackpool yesterday. Well done Phil. Hopefully your type rating licence sheet will be waiting for you after your holiday. Enjoy!

Idle Stop,

You mean the man has to wait two weeks for the piece of paper to cycle through the CAA before he can fly the machine? Upon successful completion of the check ride, the examiner cannot issue the necessary paperwork on the spot even in a temporary fashion pending receipt of the official paperwork from the CAA?

Tell me that ain't so, please!

I wish I could! What a great system. No, the paperwork has to go off to the CAA in all cases and you cannot exercise the rating privileges until you have the rating page in hand. In the old days at BHL, as you may recall, SAS, Janice used to take your paperwork to the CAA in the morning and she could pick it up in the afternoon. Still true for professional pilots making a 'personal' appearance at the PLD counter at crack of sparrows*, but post is a bit more hit-and-miss. I converted onto a new type recently and the CAA have had the paperwork by post for 2 weeks now. Professional Licences normally take precedence over Private. But answer to enquiry on Friday: 'It's being processed.' Oh well, if you can't take the jokes don't take part in the game.......

*CAA 'Crack of Sparrows': definitions, please!!

Unless things have changed over the decades, when you pass your driving test you can drive immediately while waiting for your full licence to be issued.
I wonder why the same doesn't apply to aviation licences and ratings.

The inferior FAA system provides for the examiner to issue a Temporary Airman Certificate that is effective for 120 days while the Permanent license is being created. Note....no fee, and permanent until new types or ratings obtained. No renewal fee required.

At the risk of incurring Heliport's wrath....the UK system is a load of bovine feces. I guess you sit around drinking tea waiting on your license vice earning a living while the CAA takes their sweet time getting the paperwork to you.

What happens if it gets lost in the Post for crying out loud....wait another two three weeks for them to process it again?

Have you folks considered holding a rally outside the CAA's offices complete with pitchforks and sickles calling for heads to roll?

Coool!

Thanks ayaarr, I've got new ring tone now. Trouble is I'll be too busy dreaming to answer the damn phone.

It'll be funny if the phone rings while I'm starting the '44!

QUANTICO67, if you have the throttle at the flight idle stop, that will give you an idle of 68-72% N1 (if you engineers are any good, they'll set it to 70%). The whole sequence of events goes something like this.
Pull trigger and hold until 40% N1 or 40 seconds (starter limitations).
8-13% N1- Engine primary fuel enters combustion chamber.
32% N1-secondary fuel enters combustion chamber.
40% N1- release trigger.
Idle 70% N1
Wind throttle up.
77-80 N1- Bleed band closes (depending T1 and N1).
80% N1- VIGV's begin to move (from begin to open to fully open 80-95% N1-depending on T1 and N1).
80-87% N1- Start fuel purge from P4.
Throttle fully open- 6000 N2.
Beep up to 6600 N2 (N2 range 6000-6700 +/- 50).
I know this is probably too much info, but it at least descibes the basics of the sequence.

G-UH1h @ Shawbury

Look out for G-UH1H flying down to RAF Shawbury early Thursday (25th) morning for the clebrations taking place. Staying the day and returning mid late afternoon.

By all accounts looks like it should be good day all round with BBMF, Falcons etc and the sun is supposed to put in an appearance aswell.

I agree that it is a bit of a laugh that you can not fly the A/c you have just been rated on without having the new rating's page. When I got my new rating I had to travel down to Gatwick in the early hours in order to be first in line. In the end I was third and was told it would take them 3 hours to complete. Three hours for a simple page. In the end it was only just 2.

Hope that Phil and Neil have a great time at Strawbury tomorrow and that the folks of 60 Sqn will appreciate seeing the forebear of the 412. May the weather be with you!

Idlestop,

I would hope they get some idea of what that machine symbolizes...and take a moment to consider the names on the cargo doors of the killed and missing from the aircraft's unit in Vietnam.

The Huey is just a piece of machinery to some but to others throughout the world, it symbolizes some rather amazing bits of flying in very trying conditions.

Miss Jo is a flying tribute and Phil Connolly deserves a lot of credit for what he has done to honour the men that served by marking the aircraft as it was in Vietnam.

I flew a very similar aircraft to airshows in the Pacific Northwest and at each show a lot of men came forth with their Sons and Grandsons to talk about their experiences in Vietnam. More than a few tears got shed while those Veterans recounted their experiences.

Some told of the Huey bringing hot chow to them after long stays in the jungle, others told of crews braving intense hostile fire to bring in ammunition and water and hauling their wounded out. More than a few talked of their last flight in a Huey being a result of being wounded and how they owed their lives to the crews that ignored the risk and fetched them from hostile areas and being wounded or killed in the process.

This link will take you to a web site that lists the Huey losses during Vietnam.

http://www.armyaircrews.com/huey_nam_72-73.html

That Huey is far more than a mere antecedant of the 412. The crews who manned her, made her and all her sisters more than just a piece of metal. She is an Icon just like the Lanc, Spit, Hurri, Mustang, and Fort.

I remember when the Harrier (ex-stude) was there ('85, early '86) melted us a new threshold; about 200 m further in from the original!

Run and Break from George Street, " suit you sir", initials over the cemetary "as you wish sir", are you breaking now, sir? "oooh, so you are" Halcyon days

Talking Miss Jo UK Huey

......tents actually. Flew down from Blackpool Friday and did a circuit to check the lie of the land. Delayed flying out until Monday morning due to the weather closing in on Sunday evening much to the dismay of many mops who stayed to watch our departure.

Extremely busy weekend, we were talking non stop both days for around 8 to 9 hours. Truly amazing the bredth of interest shown in the old girl. Even when we were relaxing in the evening we were still quizzed by those staying on site.

We were up in Windermere also for their airshow a couple of weeks ago and similar reaction to those that came to see us.

Managed to fill a few collecting tins for the Northwest Air Ambulance.

Miss Jo may be in Redhill on the 20th August. Will be at Military Odyssey at Detling in Kent for the bank holiday weekend.

It's been very busy getting various boxes ticked. Still a few to go but persistance/stuborness by various people is paying off.

Keep your ear peeled and you might just hear 509 overhead.

Enjoy.
