Anyone flown (or fly) the Huey?
.....and its handsome pilots....
Great flight this morning....a former Bristow Chum showed up on the doorstep looking all haggard and worn from an ardous trip down from Scotland....seems he set out over a week ago and just found his way here. He proffered a very weak excuse about car problems....car purchase contracts gone wrong....agressive stanchions that bashed in the boot of his car....all sorts of tales. I think he just did not want to leave his teen aged bride behind.
We had an absolutely wonderful meal, a few pints of the foaming ale....arose this morning to a beautiful day....fired up the Huey....renewed his acquaintance with that piece of history....and let him enjoy the sheer pleasure flying one of these things produces.
After landing he was all smiles, grins, and giggles.....left us for the sunny south of a nearby country bearing a most cherubic countenance.

That Huey looks in beautiful condition! Has the machine been restored, or just well looked after? Are parts still readilly available for these machines?
The Skeeter too is an amazing machine - i didn't realise Cierva has ever been involved in powered rotorcraft! I'm puzzled though by the statement:
"Cierva/Saunders-Roe 'Skeeter' still flying one hundred years after the Type's first flight."

The Huey was overhauled and restored to very good condition with excellent component times. Parts are readily available. It is smooth (for a Huey) and a pleasure to fly.

Vietnam Helicopters Pilots Association Interest in the Project
The President of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association (VHPA) called today to discuss the Huey project undertaken by Phil Connolly....me thinks there may be some foreign visitors looking to see the old girl in her new frock.
Hope so....they would enjoy seeing it flying again.

Know the great feeling sasless, have been flying vietnam vets for the last couple of years, I'm a young buck but have a whole bunch of respect for the old girls. It's a great feeling to fly jets knowing that they have seen have seen action, especially hueys. Just about to crack 1000 hours, god willing it will be in an airframe that's been shot at...and returnued fire. Lots of respect mate.

Greatest Ever Machines on Five
Good to see the Huey acknowledged as the Greatest ever helicopter, I'm sure there will be some debate elsewhere on this site, but on this strand I don't think there would have been any doubt as to the outcome.
509 was the partner to the 1st Cav machine flying out of Seattle for the programme. Some nice shots of the two flying together over the river. Shame they didn't use more of the footage they so obviously will have had, but chose to leave out.
They may use it in the future if they ever do their own documentary on the Huey.

Flying the aircraft in that filming was FUN!
Granted the guys in the open doors sat in the Door Gunners seats were blocks of ice before it was over....but what the heck....character building exercise for them.
The Film crew were very professional in their work and an absolute pleasure to work with.
Hopefully, we will be able to see more of the outtakes and unused footage of the filming.
Did they show the low-level down the river from an external view...the one where we rounded the bend in the river and passed overhead the camera? That was probably the most effective and at the same time the most fun to do.
