Anyone flown (or fly) the Huey?
Thanks FL, I enjoyed reading that. It sure is a grand old helicopter and would love to have a drive one day.
Has anyone seen the doco "In the Shadow of the Blade" ?
Cheers BigMike

MIA and KIA
SASless referred to the fact that the names of those in the 129th who were missing in action and killed in action had been put on the sliding doors of Miss Jo, so here they are.

Sorry to bring this back to the front but SASless was that your huey at Redhill during the evening of one of the days not sure if it was Wed 21st or Thursday 22nd Dec. She fired up at about 1700 and departed, unfortunately I was not there when she arrived. But an awsume sound and site even in the dark!
Just wondering
Thanks in advance

Tnt,
Sorry dear Lady....but I am in the USA and not on top of the comings and goings of the old girl. Last I heard it was awaiting some air tests to facilitate it being put onto the UK Registry. It was at Redhill for that transition.
I wish I was the lucky guy to be flying it....will check up and see what the status is for you.

G-UHIH was indeed flying from Redhill on 22 Dec for the purpose of being assessed for issue of a Permit to Fly. Landed at about 1610 but then had to be respotted 'cos the Helilift couldn't get onto the pad that ATC had requested.

G-uh1h
After that flight on the 22nd Dec there were one two things that needed sorting out, nothing major. Once these have been sorted it should get the green light. Then there's the matter of the two up front to have a few hours flying with a suitable pilot current on the type(?! 212). This is being arranged.
So, fingers/toes crossed, should be sorted soon.

Aser....red light?
The red light at 00:50 is the Rotor RPM light.
It illuminates when the Rrpm exceeds the upper limit 6650rpm (from distant memory). This can happen transiently during turbulence or when lowering the collective quickly......it also illuminates at the low end, where it is accompanied by an audio warning.
To be honest, in the video clip it is unclear why it illuminated. At about time 00:15, there is a view of the Rrpm guage and you can see that the pilot has the engine 'beeped' to the view top end of the range (6600rpm). It would be normal to set the rpm to 6400. I have no idea why theyd have it set so high?
There is another red light about 2" to the left of the Rrpm light....its says "FIRE"

As a matter of fact we were having a conversation about that RPM light today in the office. That video was shot during a low level high perfomance demonstration. We were in a decending right hand turn very low to the ground prior to landing. In this type of flying you always keep your RPM at the top (6600). In gives you a little more time in case of engine failure but it also hits the limit sometimes like in the tape. In lifting heavy loads you should also keep it at 6600 to reduce the coning and stress on the MR blades. 6400 is more efficient in cruise though.
It was a fun ride!

Kinda like a potato wagon on a bumpy road....kind of ride....but agreed....great fun.
Latest Huey Engine FAA AD notice...cost...97,000 USD
This is the latest AD out on the Huey engine....applicable to most aircraft.

Wonder how the boys in SA will find a way around this one?

It will affect the sale of every UH-1....that the AD applies to anyway.

Huey Help
A question for all you olds and bolds out there. On the T53-L13B engined huey (UH-1H), why do you beep down the N2 after emergency fuel has been selected? Its not because of fuel scheduling for the change over because thats why you throttle down. I was told it stops the bleed band from cycling, but how?
You got me.
You are controlling both RPM and torque with the throttle / collective position
Bleed band action should not be affected by beeping down
It might be to help prevent an overspeed when going back to outo.
I am sure smarter folks will know more.

First I ever heard of that...

We do that in Canada also, the guy that originally trained me on the 205 must have easily had 20 plus years of medium time....his reason was that beeping it down removed some of the slop in the linkage in the throttle, making it easier to control RPM by hand.
Then I have also heard the bit about "eliminating the bleed band" but I didn't buy that....
Anyone else?
