WannaChopper ...

Yes both do the CPL and I/F training as does Ray Cronin (Kestral) ... the ATPL stuff is of course much the same but to a much higher standard.

You will find the realities if I/F vary. The training done in an unstabilised machine is very very different to actual Ops in a fully set up stabilised Autopilot equipped IFR machine.

As for getting work ????? .... well that all depnds on you and your capabilities .... as I don't know you I would be loath to suggest which way to go ... you WILL however need to get that first 1000 hrs in command before life will open up for you ...

Again Good Luck

Thanks again Spinwing.
You mentioned The Helicopter Group. I've just been checking out their website, looks good.
Do you have any firsthand experience of them?
thanks

Question

Thanks Spinwing, I'll do that.

Has anyone else out there got any first hand experience of PHS, The Helicopter Group & or Kestral?

Thanks

Sydney Schools

Another small school in Sydney is Townsend Helicopters at Hoxton Park.
+61 2 9607-8300.
CFI Chris Townsend, ex Navy instructor, huge number of hours, has a reputation for turning out well trained pilots.

Very new to this game but looking around for a place to train on the Sunshine Coast. Had a TIF with Becker and found the place ok but after looking aound here a bit some people seem to have it in for him. So I thiught I would go and check Chopperline out.

If anyone can fill me in on whats wrong with Becker I would appeciate it, as the hard earned is at the bottom of a big pocket and I only have short arms. So I want to make sure it goes to the right place.

Also is there much trouble in converting an Oz licence to a UK one? or is it just better to train in UK if thats where you want to fly.

Cheers

If Only : Don't go to beckers, do a search to find out, Chopperline in caloundra are very good, also check out blue tongue at sunshine coast airport.

if you want to fly in the UK try BA, you might have to wait I think the JAA course backlog stands at 18 months at the moment.

The other option is to do the FAA course there, work your visa out and then come back and convert the exams. Train in Aus if you plan on staying there, if not go the FAA/JAA route.

pm me for any information

If only:

there is a nice school in brisbane area called aeropower, is not in archerfield (don't remember the name of the airfield) but they are quite good.

About the conversion to UK... i'm from spain and facing the same dilema, in australia you get a cpl with say... 125 or even 105 hours but in europe you need 185 wich of those you need to do at least 30 hours in europe, plus for them to recognice the hours from a country outside europe takes a wee while, that's why i'm not even thinking to find a job in europe at the moment, too much hazard, any way good luckwith your decision.

you must also check out a new school that has started up in Adelaide.

The (Heli) CFI is the ex Horizon (UAE) CFI .... and he knows his ****!

I believe they will be able to offer traing to JAR approval for CPL/ATPL H.

If Only, as mountjoy said chopperline is pretty good, even though they had one of there best instructors move on this year.
Also they have just been bought by the Curry Kenny aviation group which meens you have a lot better chance of getting a job with them after you finish your licence.
Blue tongue is also pretty handy although they can't really offer you any work once you finish. If you go there make sure you ask to be trained by Nathan Covey. Good luck mate!!!

Thanks for the quick replies. I knew about the Curry Kenny takeover at Chopperline and did think that it might lead to better prospects when finished. So I will definately pay them a visit.

Aeropower are in Redcliffe and seem to do a lot of powerline work. Not sure if they recruit from their own flying school though.

Sounds like if I want to fly in the UK, best get trained there.

Western Australia CPL

Hiya Guys,

Can any Aussie rotorheads give me some advice on where to go in WA to do my rotary CPL? Also, what can be cross-credited from a fixed wing CPL/MECIR to rotary?

Fixed wing is fast wearing off me, and I feel envious whenever a chopper passes...I may have to head to the mines for a while to fund this ambition!

I've searched the threads etc but found only very basic info...I'd be very appreciative of any forthcoming assistance, feel free to PM me if need be...

Cheers!

So ehh what school did you guys go to in oz or are some of yous starting this year??

Me and a mate are gona start the CPL with PHS in july hopefully. The theory course is all internet study at the school and theres a special deal for a Bell 206 Endorsment with them if you do the CPL course or do over 60 hrs with them!

PHS Theory

Davy07

I know that PHS melbourne offer a classroom theory course and as part of that you get the internet course & Ron's book as well. Are you up in QLD or here in Melb?

Since you're not starting flying till July it would be a great chance for you to knock off majority of your theory subjects

Davey, You should go to the USA instead of Australia.

In Oz you will get your CPL but you cannot work unless you have a resident visa. So you will leave with 105 hours or so.

Go to the States on a J1visa and you can get you CPL and work for up to two years, you will build up about 1000 hours in the two years, therefore making you more employable when you get back home.

Have a think about it mate and do some research.
Cheers

Heliranger, do you have any first hand knowledge of this J1Visa? I did a quick check and it states you only get 18 months in total to finish your trainership, with 4 weeks after that that cannot be used for paid employement. Seems a little short to complete your CPL and log 1000 hrs.
Do you know of any flight schools that adhere to the J1Visa regs?

I am researching my options for training and employment, I am willing to move anywhere for the best training and employment possibilities. Locally Fleethelicopters at Armidale seem's like a good prospect, or Air T&G in Ballina for a small school feel. Anyone have dealings with either of them? Other recommendations is welcome, I've read alot of info on this site regarding schools and jobs, but most of the info is a few years old.

Benjamin

A J1 for Flight training offers you 2 years. If you time it right, you should have no problem completing your training and getting a thousand hours or more.

However, the 2 schools in the US offering J1 are extremely busy and have waiting lists to join. One in Florida, one in Oregon.
