UK PPL and FAA Class 1 medical

Hello everyone,

I'm currently a UK PPL(A) holder with a CAA class 1 medical that expired last year. I will be doing my FAA IR/CPLME training later this year, but I want to do the FAA Class 1 medical here in the UK.

My understanding is that:

I will have to fill in the SRG1160 forms and send it off to the CAA, and only then I can send off the AC Form 8060-71 (Verification of Authenticity of Foreign License, Rating, and Medical Certification) to the FAA branch in Oklahoma City. Once in the US, I have to collect the temporary airman's certificate from the local FSDO.

If i get my FAA Class 1 here in the UK, will that certificate be valid in the US without having to verify it or go through any other paper work?

Sorry if these questions have been answered before, If some one could confirm that the above is correct.

Many thanks!

All you need to do to get a class 1 FAA medical is arrange a appointment with a FAA doctor, do the medical check and he will give you the certificate no need to send anything to stateside

If you want a 61.75 licence validation that's another completely different thing

The FAA international AME's are found here

http://www.faa.gov/pilots/amedirectory/media/int_part_2.pdf

It does not matter where they are located - it is an FAA medical. I usually choose one who is also CAA and do them at the same time as there is some saving.

You are right about the forms but you normally have to send copy of your foreign caa medical when you apply. Suggest calling the FAA foreign validation section, they are helpful by phone. I think that in your case you don't have a foreign med to verify, you could probably just verify the license, and present the FAA med cert at the fsdo. Note you need to make an appointment at the fsdo for a 61.75 and they won't schedule that until they have their copy of your verification letter. some fsdos don't insist on appointments it seems but my experience has been that they do. Either a verified caa med or a FAA med cert can be used with a 61.75, and a FAA med done in uk is entered on the FAA database right away by the medical examiner so just take the cert to the fsdo. In practice, worth doing both caa and FAA cert at same time if you can. Quite a few med examiners can do both, and class 1 FAA quite straightforward.

Hope this helps

Edit - do you need to verify your existing licence? You could ask for a student cert with your first FAA medical just for the asking. Although you'd need solo endorsements etc, they are free, and it would save all the verification paperwork. I can't remember the cpl entry requirements off hand but worth checking if you actually need the private check ride or just need to meet the private experience requirements and then the cpl requirements before progressing to commercial, cant remember which it is now but five minutes with the far should tell you if it's doable on a student cert. if you need a private check ride or need to hour build getting the 61.75 makes sense of course...

The poster didn't ask about a 61.75 only about obtaining a class 1 medical
There is no requirement to send any papers stateside to obtain a medical

You are quite correct re medical, however the temporary airmans cert he mentions in original post would be the 61.75, think the op meant he was after a 61.75 and not sure how to get his medical status clear to enable that process. Anyway, I just edited my post above to mention pros and cons of student cert vs 61.75 as he will need one or the other but not both.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm new to this converting/verification FAA to CAA business so apologies for the lack of info in my original post.

I will require a 61.75 temporary airman's certificate, I have sent all the paper work to the CAA and FAA, now I believe the FAA has to contact the CAA for verification. Will the FAA notify me once they have verified the paper work?

What I don't understand exactly is, will my class 2 medical (once verified by the FAA)which expires in 2016 be sufficient for the FAA IR/CPLME? Will the 61.75 certificate on its own give me the privileges to fly as a PPL and train towards IR/CPL etc?

Do I need to obtain an FAA class 1 medical?

Ahh, bit clearer now..

A few points which may help you, just been through this myself. FYI I chose to get the faa private and faa med despite holding a 61.75.

Firstly, have a look at CFR61.123, you need to have a private certificate as an eligibilty requirement for the cpl. It says a private certificate issued under this part, ie part 61. That sounds like a 61.75 would count but only your dpe or fsdo can tell you the definitive answer to that. The dpe is the one who signs off your cpl application before you fly the checkride with them. They will not allow you to progress to the flight if they dont like the paperwork. Strongly recommend you work out who will be your dpe for your cpl checkride and ask them before you go much further with this and I would be interested to know the answer myself. My guess is that it does count but the dpe will be unsure and have to put in some calls to their fsdo to satisfy themselves which may take time. If they say it doesnt count you will have to meet the private experience requirements and take a private checkride and knowledge test and have an actual faa med, all in order to get a faa private first. That also means a separate TSA application to the IR and ME, making three in total but you need three anyway as the cpl would be your initial faa licence so no big deal there.

You should clear this issue up before worrying about the 61.75, because whilst your preexisting ppl training will be accepted towards the requirements if you need a private cett there are things such as 100nm dual night crosscountry you will need that you probably dont have. If you have to do the faa private the 61.75 is unnecessary although helpful as you wont then need student solo endorsements if you need solo hours. You just need to ask the faa med examiner to use the version of the certificate that has the student licence on the back of it and you could do it that way.

The 61.75 will give you ppl privledges, and your caa med, when verified, will work for that purpose. You will need a bfr right away, that is required to be considered current in your situation but your 61.75 plus caa med would then work for any solo time you need, and your medical status is irrelevant for the dual portion.

The gotcha is that you will need a faa medical for the flight test anyway (cfr61.23) as an entry requirement and it looks pretty clear that means a faa class 2, your verified caa class 2 is only the equivalent of faa class 3 regardless of whether the dpe would accept it so either way you will need to get a standalone faa class 2 (or 1) by that time. You can do that here or there and it has no effect on your existing verification process.

When it is issued, the faa will fax your verification letter to the fsdo you nominate on the form and to you on the fax number you give them on the form. I had one back in three weeks and another took a month. Its worth a call after three weeks, mine was stuck because faa claimed uk caa hadnt responded and uk caa denied they had been asked, but was sorted then within a week, arrived xmas eve. You then take the verification letter and suporting docs to the fsdo you nominated (usually requires appointment) or a dpe from that fsdo who is a foreign pilot examiner, and you will receive the temp 61.75 with the real one following in the post.

Hope this is what you are after, and do let us know if a 61.75 suffices for entry to the cpl checkride if you find out, Im sure plenty of other people are in that situation.

Update on the above, a 61.75 does count for cpl test entry. There is an advisory circular ac61-65E that covers it, which you might need to show the dpe.

AC 61-65E - Certification: Pilots and Flight and Ground Instructors - Document Information

So, just a faa clas 2 med before the cpl checkride and your 61.75 plus bfr for solo seems to be the way ahead

A colleague had a class 2 renewal today here in LA, that was $100. A class 1 is a little more, $150 if I remember correctly. I imagine prices in LA are at least average.

From what I remember it was about £100 quid extra to do UK and FAA medical together in UK, but can't remember which way around it was, ie 100 to add a faa to a caa or 100 to add a caa onto a faa

I'm really glad that I did as I finally needed to get glasses for the class 2, which meant I could get that sorted out before I left the UK

As a matter of interest, where are you intending to fly in the US? and do you have all the CPL experience requirements already? It's worth an early meeting with the examiner to make sure they are clear about foreign logbooks, places and distances

I had an interesting debate with my school about the cpl long cross country, they claimed one of the legs had to be 250nm long, rather than one of the landing points being 250nm from the point of departure. This appeared to stem from the fact that most people end up back at base for obvious reasons and so examiners are used to checking the destination leg length. The DPE specifically mentioned this point when we were trying to book the check ride. Although the FAR 61.129 looks pretty clear to me, it took a call to the FSDO to clear it up to everyone elses satisfaction. That would have been bad news had it occured on the day of the checkride. I had similar issues on the private checkride.

Hope it goes well for you
