Great pix of the deathstar:-)

Many years ago up in Tammy in another life I used to work on a 701P I think the owner used to call it, a Machen Mod job 700 as far as I remember & it had twin turbo'd Lycs producing over 400 gee gee's a side on 4 blade stubby props. This thing was a beast, green in colour & owned by an ex CX driver if I recall. I only went in it once in the circuit at Tammy & it was like a winged bullet, don't think the driver looked outside the window once,(apart from landing) his head buried inside with all the fancy gadgets of the day keeping him "Airline" oriented!
He said lose a donk on T/Off & hang on tight whilst standing on the rudder pedal 'till it's pushed thru the floor....scary stuff!

Wish I had a piccy of it, back in those days no Mob Ph's with cameras around.

Had a very interesting end to it's life, that much I'll never 4get:)

bizbug,

Is that the Corsair thats been undergoing restoration in Darwin since Noah conducted the first escorted cruise vacation?

Ultralights 10th May 2014 11:29

Is that the same Corsair owned by the CFI at the aerobatic academy at bankstown?

gassed budgie 10th May 2014 12:07

Wally, it's a 700P. It packs 350hp a side through twin turbo'd 540's. And you're right, goes like **** out of a shanghai. The only Aerostar to come with 400hp engines was being developed by the factory back in the mid seventies. The engines were twin turbo'd IO-720's. It was to be known as the Aerostar 800 and there was only one built, but Ted Smith died in 1976 (it was his baby) and the aircraft never made it to production.

The Corsair looks superb. Going by the cowl it looks to be an F4U-5N. In combat trim the R2800 in these things ramped up to 2850hp at takeoff when everything was working as it was supposed to.
So if one had to choose between 2,850hp and 700hp....

....2,850hp wins every time! Beautiful.

Nor. will I. I was the silly bugger on the end of the hose that put it out. Just another nights lost sleep.

The only Aerostar to come with 400hp engines was being developed by the factory back in the mid seventies.
The Aerostar Aircraft Corporation did finally finish the 400HP version - just with slightly different engines....

"GB" it most likely was 350 gee gee's a side but for some reason I recall 425 gee gee's & the stubby 4 blade props. DP (The owner) said it would cruise with a high power setting right up against VMO, didn't see it but I believed it the way it took off heading for the Moon!:-)

"TTY" that's very interesting indeed, I recall coming in to work the following morning to see it's back broken around the main cabin door & sitting on it's 4 blade props..............looked like it was a dead duck!:-(
"DR O" sure was the one:-(

Many believe that there was more to the Tamworth fire than met the eye. The owner was indeed ex-CX and TAA. Left CX under a cloud. He was no fun to fly with, that much I can say. Affectionately referred to as the fruitfly or great Australian pest, he was an angry little man.

The consensus view is that it was an insurance job to pre-empt what the sniffer dogs might have found. I believe it had a lot of phantom hours in the north of Australia and beyond. One of his sons is the ex investment banker who put the fake bomb collar on that poor lass in Sydney a few years back. Troubled folk.

'VR' I am aware of all that you say, but it was a long time ago now & is past history so I wasn't going to divulge any further details amongst these pages.
Personally I had no issues with the guy but I know he was generally a troubled guy.
Being a sprog pilot way back then I just marveled at the high tech stuff it had at the time:-)

Why Frank? Something just a little bit "military" under the wing?

That looks like a "real fun" aeroplane..

P.S. Any info on the story behind this particular Bonanza?

I don't know the history of the "gun-Bo", found it with others like this twin Bo. Thought somebody else may enlighten us. Pity about the quality of photographs. The previous ones eclipsed this and I urge viewers to go back a page as mine appear to have opened a new page. Sorry!

Yes spot on. Pamalican Island in the Philippines. A new adventure so expect some more photos. Brand new 70 hour EX caravan so I'm pretty happy. Here she is at the end of the day in Manila. Plenty of flashes as we taxied in so probably a few more photos up now.
