:} Actually he is fiddling with his company issued all purpose tool...I just know that will bring out the deviants...what were those things called...knife, pliers, screw drivers of all kinds etc. The things that send security appoplectic these days:ugh:

We were also issued with strobes...I won't go into the detail on where some of those ended up...but the comment "Your eyes are flashing" got one of our Bandit/Otter Flight Attendants to the mirror:E

Pick the airline and the port
I'd say Crowley's and Rabaul (?)

gaunty 14th Feb 2007 04:18

Chuck 'n tin

Well there wuz,

C401, C401A and C401B wivout a cargo door. 300hp engines.

The C402 was the only shortnose version wiv a cargo door, then the '69 C402A and B and on got the door and the pinnochio treatment, '72 on they got square windows and a bigger cabin till '79 then the C402C got the 325hp engines and wet wing. The Pilot crew door was always an option.:ok:

And running alongside them as early as '68 was the 421, same fuse and wing as the C402 375hp and the from '70 the C414 same as but with 310hp.

Chimbu chuckles 14th Feb 2007 07:30

All the Talair 402s were As except GKB which I think arrived in Talair in 68 or 69...I flew it in 1988...I flew Richard's C once...nice machine but the As were nicer to pole around.

Crowleys!!!...just how old do you think I am?:}

You got Rabaul right though..pre eruption of course....or actually if you include the 1937-42 eruptions it would be 'between' eruptions:ok:

Trolleydriver,

Damn that was quick.

It is Aurukun circa 1977 or so. It was taken from the first flight off the "new" runway when it was still bauxite. You can just see the end of it in the top left of the photo.

My flight out was two days prior and was the last flight off the old strip that dominates the photo. I was the only passenger in a DC3 and treated like a king. Got to sit in the captains seat for nearly the whole flight. Couldn't happen now.:( :(

Dog,

Pity about the sunk plane. I loved flying in those things.

trolleydriver 14th Feb 2007 09:31

good ol' Aurukun

notmyC150v2,

last time i was there they had started to put houses on the grass strip that run behind the hospital... and the original strip was hardly visible anymore. I had the privalige of doing the first cct on the runway after it was sealed in a good old 206

I spent a while there :} Its got some of the best fishing i've ever seen. :ok:

Ah yessss....Some of the Talair Flight Attendants were rather nice now, were'nt they Chuck!:ok: :ok:
Too good for the likes of us Simbu blokes though!!:{ :E

chimbu warrior 14th Feb 2007 10:36

Only problem with the short-nose 402 was a lack of baggage space. Talair actually had another short-snout that ended its days at Lake Murray. An over-zealous cargo-boi loaded lots of welding rods in the nose locker, and it simply never rotated.

The pilot survived, and I believe has recently returned to PNG - AGAIN!

Chimbu chuckles 14th Feb 2007 10:57

When he returned last time, must be 12+ yrs ago, he went down to DCA office and had them take BN2 OFF his licence...this of course terribly coonfused the fella behind the desk...but with his palm liberally greased (a 'Somare' I believe) he duly complied.:D

Pinky certainly some were very lovely, and lots of fun:E , but the cutest were pretty thick. The same FA who lept up to see if the strobe really was flashing out her eyes also bolted into the cockpit of my Bandit one day ex Rabaul-Buka seconds after I had roared past one of the young fellas in a BN2 a wing span or so away and breathlessly said "Chuck...how did he do that?"

"Do what?" :confused:

"How did he make the Islander fly backwards?"

:hmm: :ugh: :}

notmyC150v2 15th Feb 2007 11:01

Trolleydriver,

The fishing sure is spectacular. It's the only time in my life I have seen a 40 pound barramundi. The bloody thing was bigger than me at the time.

It was caught by a guy called Josiah who hailed from Vanuatu (New Hebrides back then). Nicest guy you could hope to meet and very generous with his fish. Not so generous with his daughters...

It's funny, I hated the place at the time but it looks really good from 30 years away.

Wasn't Lake Murray, it was an airstrip on the Fly, south of Kiunga but I don't recall the name. The nose locker was loaded with hessian bags of nuts and bolts whilst the pilot was distracted. If memory serves me correctly, a generator tied down inside kept going when the C402 stopped, exiting the aircraft through the side!

Think you mentioned P2-GKB? That was the first C402, bought new by TAL in 1968, in anticipation of the first Reg 203 exemption to conduct RPT operations.

tinpis 15th Feb 2007 21:20

Quick look in me old log shows GKB GKC GKD MWD GKK was a long nose as was WDB

Ginger beers knocked up some lead plates that sat in the nose lockers of all the shorties
Also they has a stick bilong arse to stop them bumpin when the pilot climbed over the 44 gallons drums of fuel cargo :uhoh:

Chimbu chuckles 16th Feb 2007 03:17

I believe WDB became GKE...one of the nicer flying 402As we had.

http://www.fototime.com/{CE6B2AF6-0A...1}/picture.JPG

Oops...I just noticed I forgot to retract the landing lights after my last landing...still I was about to head off to Girua and Gurney so prolly discovered my mistake as soon as I turned around:}

Torres pretty sure it was Lake Murray where the 402 went bush at flying speed with the nosewheel nailed down by CofG. From memory the generator went out the side when one wing hit something and spun him around...other wise our stammering mate would have been killed instead of 'just' spending a VERY long taim long haus sik. One of natures very funny fellas.:ok:

troppo 16th Feb 2007 05:28

nice pic chuck...how bout you post some on the PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok thread and keep it alive
