Torres 16th Feb 2007 06:31

I've searched the internet for a map of the Fly to look at airstrip names but come up with zilch. I can "see" the strip in my mind, short name, not Obo (I don't think) but south of Obo. That prang was pre 1984, so over 20 years ago. I don't recall who the pilot was but from your reference to a stutter, I'm sure it wasn't W-w-w-w-warwick - at that time he was restricted to Islanders, having shortened a C402's prop blades on the runway at Port Morbid. Besides, I seem to recall the pilot became the subject of Junior's vented spleen and ceased to be employed nano seconds after the prang! :}

Tinpis, you forgot GKF which Bobby pranged at Brugham and SAB ex Sepik Air Charter - which became Sub the Ramu River. WDB and MWD were originally Masling's, recovered from a hangar fire. WDB was contracted to Dillinghams for a few years around 1970, McChook in command.

There were nine C402s all together including the ex M@cair aircraft.

Found it!! :ok: :ok:

The airstrip that C402 went bush was:

SUKI
08.02.97
141.43.50
SUKI 3 15/33
20
650 m

Obo was too short - only 487 meters.

Nope not Wa, wa, warwick:ok:

The same guy who flew Daru-Kiunga-Daru, solid IMC from above 500' in a Baron with DCA on board conducting a base check.

Our hero took off, went IMC and proceeded to read a paperback until his watch suggested it was time to descend, which he did...and proceeded to pop out right over Kiunga at 500'. The whole sector mosty flown DR. Having offloaded whatever and loaded up with whatever they proceeded to plunge back into the overcast at < 500' homeward bound. Out came the paperback again but DCA had decided it was time for a little IFR Q&A.

X what are the requirements for descent below MSA?

"N..N...no idea"

Well what are the alternate requirements?"

"C...cer...couldn't begin to guess"

"Now common on....you should know this stuff"

"N...n...no. If I was far...far...fking instrument rated I would need to know that stuff":D

Later that same day the DCA guy rounded up the Daru based pilots over a beer at the Wyvern and proceeded to mildly chastise them..."I know working for Junior is tough etc etc etc...but what I am really concerned about is your lack of weight and balance control".

"W..w...we estimate it."

"How?"

"W...w...well if its this big by this big by this big it is x k...kg".

"How do you know?"

"B...b...because that is what a carton of SP brown weighs"

"What if it's only half that big?":uhoh: :ooh:

"N...N....no f...far...far..king idea. I d...d...don't drink half cartons of
p...piss".

Now this occurred a little before my time but I have heard the same story from several present including the DCA man...even he was in tears retelling it:ok:

Hey Torres what about COJ and COI and GKP?

GKP ended up on the side of Mt Otto.

I think we had COJ at Airlink in Rabaul after Talair shut up ops....P2-ALB but not certain...if correct the Volcano ended it's days.

COI is still where it is in the picture below...off the end of Tokua...bloody good thing to...it tried to kill me at Finchafen:suspect:

Anyone got of decent piccy of GKB?

chimbu warrior 16th Feb 2007 08:36

Chuck, that is indeed an accurate account of "Dipstick's" route check with CAA, and he was one and the same who flew GKA for the last time.

Torres, it was a short name near the Fly river; L-a-k-e M-u-r-r-a-y! I can think of about a dozen 402's in the GV fleet, and that was prior to the Co-Air takeover.
