Ahhhhhh....

CAUTION RANT IN PROGRESS

In the last three weeks I have noticed a HUUUUGE amount of traffic (especially Q-LINK) Spacing their position/depature reports out with

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

in between pertinent information. Can I use this forum to politely request an off air practice before annoyings us all with

"Centre Qlink Aaaaaaaaah 4something DELTA departed ahhhhhh where-ever tracking ahhhhhhhh some radial reference the ahhhhhh omni, on climb ahhhhhhhhhhhh flight levels and insert waypoint ahhhhhhhhhhhhh time insert time. It's just annoying at best and damned unprofessional at worst. And being completely honest I actually heard that many ahhhh's on freq the other day".

PLLLLEASE I beg of you just think before you speak

RANT OVER

There is one particular chopper pilot working on Barrow Island who ALWAYS started his radio calls with:

"aaaaaaaand Barrow Island traffic etc etc etc"

Said it so much we called him "Andy".

Talking of Aahhhhhh and AND...

I just don't get people adding "This time..." to calls when position reporting.
eg ABC is XXX This time...

What other time would you be reporting your current position?

Since we're all having a rant... my 2 cents worth...

"Centre, XXX IFR taxi"
It must be damn foggy if they have to taxi IFR...
Just "Centre, XXX" is ok if you're not sure if they're receiving you, or think they're a bit busy... they will still tell you to standby.

"......climbing FLXXX pending clearance"

(there's already a thread about 'pending clearance'... so lets not dig that one up again)

You guys must fly in different airspace from me!

I mix with Qlink, QF, VB, Macair (well, I used to! Can we say the name now?) Skytrans, Alliance and Toll Express pretty regularly - generally all very professional as are all the ATC and RAAF people.

Seems like I haven't had an issue with anyone for a few years now.

Could it be me ??????

I don't see what the problem is with: Centre, XXX IFR, Taxi ......

..... but the "pending clearance" bit is a bit of a wank. Surprised to hear it from a Foxtrot Delta the other day!

We are probably all guilty of the occassional "ahhhhhhhh", when we have not thought it through before pushing the button!

I don't see one single bit of correct phraseology there at all.

As per the AIP, you don't need to prompt ATC. It's simply "Brisbane/Melbourne Centre, ABC, King Air, IFR, POB 3, taxiing Emerald for Brisbane, Runway XX".

I have always done it like that, and I very RARELY ever got told to repeat myself.

Maybe if everyone read their AIP from time to time, and bothered to make the CORRECT calls, then we wouldn't have to have threads like this one, with people still getting it wrong.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh you ahhhh got me there with that thread title, I thought for ahhhhhh minute there that we were going to debate something that hadn't been done to death a couple of dozen times already.

But since I'm here now, some possible motives behind your aggravations:

IFR taxi - Flight rules are required to be stated if IFR. As for the prompting, I often do it because the current trim & terrific version of ASA has the poor controller handling 15 different freqs. Since we can't always hear aircraft on the others, calls are frequently needed to be repeated by others. Not by me as I prompt the poor over-worked lad/lass. And yes, i am often asked to s'by! Morno, I had thought that we were in not too disimiliar parts of the world too.

Pending..... - Seems to be used to ease the ATCO's concerns re: VCA's and saves him/her having to say "remain outside E" and the subsequent replies. Granted though, "Pending Clearance" is non-std and does take up a whole second of our day to say! I too have used this one on rare occassions also when class E/C is in fairly close proximity.

Final - By definition there can only be..................oh never mind. What really peeves me off is when the girls in the house hang the toilet paper so that it unrolls from the back of the holder!!!!!

There are many ways to skin that poor bloody cat folks. While we certainly don't need to use the (non-std calls) above all of the time, common sense (and its judicious use) needs all the support it can get in this over-legislated world.

Now, I hope you all remember to use "climbing flight level tree niner zero" and "descending fife tousand."

IFR doesn't mean you're in IMC. It can be clear blue skies and you can still be taxiing under the IFR.

Not sure why people get flight rules confused with met conditions on this forum

Having said that, a prompting call should only be made for the departure report as specified in the regs. When you're taxiing just give the call as morno said.

Crikey

Some of you people must have achieved an exceptional high degree of an*l
Pedanticismn (?) if your world is so structured that this annoys you, try trying another route it might help.

The selectively placed aghhhh within a transmission is there for a purpose, much like the clutch is used between changing gears if you will.

Not all of us were raised in the fast paced high octane atmosphere of our meaningless stop light controlled urban jungles where we learned to speak by mimicking commercial radio presenters.

Some of us were raised on simple country air where things happen a little slower and the well placed aghhh is there to stop the clashing between words and saying things we don’t mean or have no meaning at all.

Similarly we may not hear real quick either being more used to the somewhat subtler sounds of crickets and frogs not honking horns and yelling radio sales people.

Better it be that you accept the aghhh’s lest you find yourself going head to head with a slow talking slow hearing person in fast moving aircraft who has selected the wrong word!

And when did the 'third person' radio call become the norm?

'VH-ABC Taxi's/Backtracks/Lines up/Rolls...etc'

It's only 3 extra f**king letters...'ing'! Thats all!!!. (AIP Gen 3.4-46, 5.13.4.) You are in the aircraft thats making the call aren't you!?

We seem to be divided into two groups in this regard.

And you only ever hear it in CTAF's..never in a controlled/radar environment...I mean you never hear 'BN Ctr, ABC requests clearance'

It just sounds odd... and it ****s me....to tears.

What really peeves me off is when the girls in the house hang the toilet paper so that it unrolls from the back of the holder!!!!!
Reverseflow...my number 1 pet home peev! Fark...I thought it was just me! Don't they see the inefficiency of this practice?!

Agreed. I don't give the 'heads up' call as mentioned, and have never had a problem in doing so. But for those who feel the need to do so...

And Dragun.. yes I am aware the IFR isn't IMC. Just being a bit facetious about the mentioned radio call... which as mentioned, I don't think is necessary.

Some of us were raised on simple country air where things happen a little slower and the well placed aghhh is there to stop the clashing between words and saying things we don’t mean or have no meaning at all.
Have a think before you hit the button and we won't have to clog up the airways with superfluous rubbish.

What fecking meaning does "aghhh" have?

Sure, we've all slipped every now and then when we've become tougue-tied, but as for intentionally doing it on the airwaves, very, very, very poor airmanship and frankly, quite stupid.

Unusual attitude I'm off to get a hairscuts now, back aghhhh, soon umnmm an er. luv youse all
