Been tidying up the happy snaps and thought this one was worth posting.

Lake Hood is the world's busiest seaplane base, handling an average of 190 flights per day. It is located on Lakes Hood and Spenard, next to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, three miles from downtown Anchorage.

A canal dug between Lakes Hood and Spenard created the seaplane base. It pre-dates Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the runway of which can be seen in the upper part of the photo.

Can you imagine this happening in Oz? 190 lighties a day in the same circuit area as an international airport - controlled by the same tower.

Dr

Not possible in Australia because of our "unique australian situation" Our airline pilots cannot handle a situation like that. They are being dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but are not there yet.
And all those lighties steal paying passengers. Can't have that.

The brother-in-law gave this to the sister as a birthday present, but has since passed away.

FTDK. A month or so back I was taking off from Lake Hood, using West departures which start in Lake Spenard and go down the channel. I had a problem with my prop and could only get low power, and could not get onto the step. Must have been 20 knots max, the noise was tremendous (I was flying a Sea Hawk Experimental with a pusher prop).
By the time I entered the channel I knew I would not get off the water but it seemed quicker to continue as I was than to pull off the power and taxi.
I knew the Tower was yelling at me, but could not understand over the engine noise.
I was about to pull off into the AMD bay at the end when the airplane decided to get up onto a step, and I was able to take off, finally.
I mumbled some apology and departed the area.
Don't know how many others had to go around, but I assume it was more than one.
Never been back.
It is about half covered in ice, now, anyway.
That water way is lit, did you know? Has lights on each side of the channel.
Had to do more than one landing there at night. The usual technique is to use a glassy water approach, it saves time and gets you clear of the channel quicker.
There is an adjacent gravel runway for the wheels, and the airport is nearly as busy in the winter with skiplanes. They groom the ice on the lake when it is thick enough.
They have a big floating mower that cuts the weeds. That became necessary after they shot all the ducks, which originally kept the weeds under control but were perceived to be a hazard to airplanes (not true, you should see the ducks in action). If the weeds were not cut and removed, they would clug up the lake and a takeoff with the water rudders carrying 100 pounds of weed is not a pretty sight.
Very few airplanes actually do circuits, most are arrivals or departures and they are very efficient, until I arrive!

Excellent quality pics indeed Ultralights and full credit to all US photographers and participants.

But your chronology is cactus. World War Two commenced in 1939 but by 1942 American operations were still very limited and little if any territory had been taken from the Japanese.

Iwo Jima was not taken until 1945.

19th Feb 1945 was the first day of battle on Iwo Jima as the US Marines came ashore to a determined Japanese defence.

Something like 2,400 U.S. Marine casualties on day 1.....

Over 25,000 wounded and 7,000 dead in the taking of the island.

Not nice.

I thoroughly recommend reading "With the Old Breed" by E.B Sledge. Its one of the books the series "The Pacific" was based on. I don't think I have read an account where you can feel the impact and horror of that campaign in such clarity

Ok enough of old Pommy cars - some old pommy aeroplane...the camera shake is bloody annoying - need to come up with a better mount. Forkie suggested a Forkmount (TM) - I didn't bother to point out the Tiger doesn't have a storm window.

I also don't understand why the sound doesn't upload sometimes.

G'day Chimbu

What camera are you using?

I have a ContourHD and I have had some success affixing it with zip-ties and backed with some foam rubber.

The zip-tie arrangement has now been proven shake-free at 220 KIAS

Its a VIO POV and the mount is a 'universal' mount.

That is an awesome clip CC, makes me want to go flying again. Nothing quite like playing in the clouds. These ground schools aren't much fun.

It would be nice to see an Eight Point Hesitation Roll.

Not easy in a Tiger!
