SEA Low Fly By at Nadzab
I was on duty in the tower that day. One of my colleagues was under check at the time with a check controller that came up from Moresby for that purpose.
"Nadzab tower Sierra Echo Alpha, Markham bridge request clearance not above *** unreadable**" My colleague thought he heard not above 1500 so he cleared SEA at that level.
About five minutes later we were looking for him out of the window to separate him from a Air Niugini departure and just could not see him until one of the national ATCs called out "There he is" and he was pointing down!
The porter flew over the DCA workshops / compound, turned left then dragged its wheels just over the passenger terminal, turned right banking between the light poles then CLIMBED to the level of the tower passing us on the Northern side, the Cargo Boi clad pilot waving cheerily as he passed.
About a year later I was in Lae tower when he ditched the baron.
Incidently there was at least one other pilot that flew the Porter, I dont remember his name.. he took me flying in that machine one day to Kaiapit? cant rember too long ago! Anyway this bloke was a really nice guy, flew the Twotters and the Bandits. He was involved in training as well, he frightened the hell out of me one day with a practise engine failure after take off in a 402. He held it low until over the 32 threshold then pushed down to fly over the water. When I rang him after that flight he said he was demonstrating the use of ground effect to get up to flying speed.

Indeed Sabre, from that very accurate description you were there! I was waiting for him at Goroka....
When I think about it, yes, he had a brown/khaki cargo boi shirt on. I believe he may have had a difference of opinion with a controller earlier in the day? (A Saturday if I remember correctly?)
His final score of destruction included a C185 or C206 near Madang; Baron in the Huon Gulf; Porter at Karimui and the Bandit at POM. Which lead to Junior's "Can't drown the c---. Can't burn the c---. Better sack the c---!"
Of course, he was eventually forgiven and turned up again in the Solomons or Vanuatu?
He certainly led a charmed life!!!

My memory of that day..
was that it was a weekday.. the check controller would never check on weekends.. it was too slack traffic-wise. Plus there were people at the DCA workshop so it was a weekday.
I dont think there was any issue between the gentleman and an ATC. but I could be wrong. "The Goss" on the day was that the gent arrived at the Aerodrome to fly the the morning RPT Bandit service to Goroka dressed in a cargo boi's outfit a little worse for wear. "Your not flying the bandit in that get up, take the Porter to Goroka for a servicing" or words to that effect were spoken.
I'll be interested to know how accurate this goss was..but hey its a great story!

Sabre, you may be correct. I was at home in Goroka when I got the phone call he was on his way, so assumed it was a Saturday. I'd only heard there was a disagreement. I guess Sluggo would know what transpired at Lae.

Hey Tinpis, I have a little time in that lik lik Balus. CMW was in Qld when I flew it. was owned by the family that has the fly in at raglan every year or so.

WIZ, a lot of people had a fair bit of time on that old girl before that photo was taken, it was sure well worn.
The boys in the hangar put together a 185 about 74 or 75 it was amazing, it blew the doors off anything with one engine. P2-EIE I think it was.Wonder who got that one?
