I know they say a sucker is born every minute - but hoping to find 400K of them is very optimistic…

Media: Russia plans to hire 400,000 professional soldiers.

Russian Defense Ministry will start a new recruitment campaign on April 1, aiming to conclude contracts with 400,000 professional soldiers, the Russian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

ok, that makes sense

as for

They obviously hadn’t been trained very well.. :p

They should have come to the U.K, though how they would plan a mission with late trains or strikes would be beyond me, still they could sabotage what was running by sticking leaves on the lines.

From the little I know about canopies - I also believe a square, ram-air type canopy requires a degree of constant active steering and/or braking, has a higher descent speed and faster forward speed?
Not good if a pilot is injured or incapacitated during ejection.

Square chutes fly and can stall, they also experience much greater oscillations than a round chute. Not exactly what you want when ejecting into a turbulent airflow at unusual attitudes at low level.

Well my point was more that with a round you go where the wind takes you, but with a square you get to decide where you go - within reason of course. Having said that the possibility of being incapacitated and unable to unstow the brakes, or steer the thing or flare it on landing is a valid point

Then again, if you punched out of a two seater, with a square you could always build a two stack on the way down

and now back to regular programming . . .

Wagner recruiting via Pornhub advert

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/15/wagner-group-seek-new-recruits-x-rated-pornhub-advert/

" Russia’s
notorious Wagner mercenary group has turned to a pornography website to help recruit potential fighters for the war in Ukraine.

A Pornhub advert for the private military company, which first came to light in a popular Russian Telegram channel covering the porn industry, shows a woman rolling a lollipop around in her mouth.

“We’re the most bad-ass private army in the world. We’re hiring in all regions of Russia,” a woman’s voice can be heard saying. “Don’t j--k off, go to work for PMC Wagner.”

The advert was reportedly visible to viewers accessing the site from several Russian regions, but not in Moscow, in line with the strategy guiding Russia’s partial military mobilisation last year, which reportedly targeted those in rural parts of the country rather than in the major cities."

Some "out-of-the-box" thinking by Prighozin, but I have to imagine that these "potential recruits" are probably more motivated to continue spending their time with "Jessica, the Swedish Nurse " * than being knee-deep in freezing mud, before being ordered to advance into a storm of bullets from well-prepared defensive positions in Bakhmut.

* If there is such a site, then my use of this name is purely coincidental :O

Some time back, I looked at a new chute for research flight test, and the discussion on whether a square or conventional chute was of interest. The reliability of square is pretty darn good, but the reservation existed on reliability in an unstable body position which is the main difference between sport and emergency use. The issue of incapacitated tracking downwind was also a factor, and we went with conventional chutes. Will not be surprised to see that change at some point for the unstable deployment... downwind drive for the open control case will always be a factor.

Ruzzia loses it's sense of humour

Humorist gets 3 years in the pokey for his second joke that Lord Farquard failed to find amusing:

Putin berates Shiogu for evacuating Kherson, and the general responds, that he is only following Putin's order, he is ridding Ukraine of nazis ....

didn't go down well on the 16th floor.

The prior transgression was a prisoner arriving in the jail and being asked why he was there, his answer, "laziness...; the night before he had had vodka with a neighbour and they had berated their dear leader mercilessly. The next morning, feeling remorse, he contemplated going to the police and reporting his neighbour for sedition against the dear leader, but he decided to sleep in, his neighbour was not as lazy...."

3 years inside Russian jails for a couple of half funny jokes. Putin needs some therapy or a close hug, preferably around his neck.

No sooner than the Poles arrest Russian spies in Poland than the headquarters of the Russian security service, the FSB in Rostov is on fire after a major explosion. Rostov is located near the border with Ukraine... Oh dear never mind..

Rostov's regional governor said a short circuit appeared to have caused the fire, which ignited fuel tanks Rostov-on-Don is the capital of a southern Russian region bordering on the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, currently the scene of intense fighting in the war.
Short circuit attached to a larger length incendiary device? :E
