that Oerlikon KD is in use in several other platforms as well. Gepard is just the version on Leo1 platform and being originally developed in the 60's it was deemed to be retired from Wehrmacht already. So gepard in a very broad sense means its KD on Leo1 hull.
eg Finland placed those on T55 platform and nowadays installed on 2a4 platforms. Another example: Poles have the PZA Loara which is on twardy platform (in essence further development of T72). Japanese version is Mitsubishi type 87. There will be market for the ammunition, and more guns for surplus platforms, if proven efficient. https://defence24.com/polish-35-mm-artillery-system-configuration-potential |

One question would be, how great is the continuing/final total of requirements going to be ? I have no in-depth knowledge, but have the impression that the Gepard ( like the HIMARS ) was not a storming success pre-2021. HIMARS has now experienced a rocket-like increase in sales: will Gepard go the same way ?
Modern weapon systems that have gone through a proper open market test & validation cycle are in fact very good. |

I make 3 April 2021 a bit less than 2 years ago but would tend to agree about Racedo.

Why then has/is it been so difficult to secure ammunition ? When Gepard was delivered it had (AFAIR ) only 60 000 rounds and there were no other suppliers ready/able/willing to supply.

That's a close engagement.

Apologies for the thread drift. |
As for ammo, there is no doubt that Ukraine has ammo producing capabilities and these are increasing. Afaik there is nothing clever or containing IP about Gepard ammo and if Ukraine was not getting enough they could decide to produce it - as long as they got all the gepards first!
For sure , as per recent press releases they are concentrating on soviet 152mm,122mm and 120 mm mortar production ,these factories having recently been brought online, but there is nothing to stop them from manufacturing basic NATO caliber rounds , it would be surprising to me if they do not already make 155mm ammo on the qt - the S22 Bohdana 155mm SPG ( famously the one of which the single prototype shelled snake island) was just announced as going into serial production. |
Read on a BBC news site just now that Russia are talking of using whatever means possible to defeat the German tanks attacking Russia for the second time in 80 years. Bluffing or is the leader fearing the consequences?
