I must admit I do find it strange some of the reactions to the aircraft Captain being killed on here, simply because he wasn’t killed performing his duty.
As said already, he is a combatant and regardless of if he is flying or not, he it still fair game.
If you cannot take out the aircraft, take out the pilots which is the better option, take out an aircraft on the ground you can stick the pilot in another aircraft, take out the pilot and then those aircraft cannot fly and not only that you in effect take out the whole crew.
The reaction is almost as if the pilots amongst you are realising you could be killed before getting airborne and you see that as bad form.
There was a reason in Germany why they used an APC to transfer Sqn Pilots to the aircraft from the hard, it was because they were the weakest link.
The way they can target the likes of an APC or hard these days, it would probably be smarter to have the pilots dispersed in HAS or wherever with their aircraft, who knows they may do that these days.
More on his shooting.

Does this not take us back to the ethics of shooting enemy pilots parachuting from stricken craft?
The issue is Ukraine are doing what they can with the limited tools they have at their disposal......and they simply don't have the tools to take on the Russian AirForce in the air, when they are using stand-off from within Russian airspace, so the only way they can do what they can to stop things like the Tu-95 being used to attack Ukraine civilians and infrastructure is stuff like this. You have to admire the bravery of any Ukraine SF that are working so far behind their lines that are doing this for one thing.

Killed while on duty is one thing. Killed while on leave is another. While still a combatant I still find it distasteful and it would be considered more distasteful if it was a British or US serviceman. But then war is war and politics the remit of the good guy I guess.

The IRA were even less discriminating in their killing of Service personnel and their families.
The rules of war can only apply as long as both sides follow them. When one side commits repeated war crimes like bombing hospitals and schools they have excluded themselves from any further protection.

The Ultimate sacrifice...
In #Bakhmach they said goodbye to pilot Andrei Antikhovich, who sent a shot down attack aircraft to enemy columns On February 26, 2022, the captain of the #Ukrainian Armed Forces, making a combat sortie on a Su-25 aircraft in the Kherson direction, discovered enemy columns.
He fired at them, which delayed the advance of the Russians, but the enemy hit Andrei’s plane.
When the question arose about ejecting or destroying the enemy, the pilot directed the damaged attack aircraft towards the enemy column and inflicted significant losses on the invaders at the cost of his own life.
First, the Hero was buried in Antonovka, #Kherson region, which is still under #Russian occupation.
The pilot’s body was returned only at the end of December 2023. We are proud. Eternal glory to the Hero! Suspilne

I'm not a Russian sympathiser and want to see Ukraine win but feel a little uneasy about this. Is he a Bomber Pilot who was ordered to bomb a target. Are we to just kill pilots now regardless?
He is the enemy but isn't there a code of conduct in war we should respect else slip down a slope of barbaric behaviour?
Randomly assassinating people just doesn't seem right to me.

It's not for the likes of us to decide. Imagine having Putin in the crosshairs. Would you hesitate?
