What makes this a self-propelled mortar, instead of a self-propelled gun ? I believed that the defining characteristic of a mortar was loading down the barrel: the name being carried forward from the mediaeval barrel-loading mortiers.

IIRC Germany is pulling some Leopard 1s from storage. I believe they use 105mm, as opposed to the 120 of the 2.

Mortars are easy to move from firing position to another compared to artillery. Also, mortarts usually fire at higher angle than 45 degrees dropping greanades near vertically, but range is limited compared to eg howitzers. Ammunition is different as well. a 120mm mortar may have max range of 10km while artllery goes beyond that.

Mortars are great infantry support tools with smaller danger area and can be moved around (shoot and scoot).

If that chassis would have a 120mm gun instead of mortar, it would be more of a IFV/MBT and most likely have a smoothbore gun intended for direct fire up to max 5km (comparing to eg. French AMX-10 RC). If it would have a 120mm gun it would then be a self propelled howitzer intended for indirect fire and ranges from 10km to 20km (ish).

I think the fundamental difference is that, despite being breach loaded, it still fires mortar rounds. So, with fins and carrying their own propellant. Makes for a much lighter barrel and also allows for switching between direct and indirect targeting.

Fond memories of working on the design and development of the Merlin guided mortar bomb back in the late 1980's. Absolute bleeding edge state of the art with millimetric radar seeker, silicon-on-saphire (radiation hardened) in-house production RF front-end, signal processing and guidance control IC's, all surface mount ceramic substrate PCB's, polyamide interconnects, shaped charge warhead, fire and forget in an 81mm package.

After the wall came down and peace broke out, the UK MoD pulled out but the project continued development with fully private funding culminating in some very successful full system trials against moving targets. The key technologies transferred to other systems primarily Brimstone, Excalibur 155mm guided shells and some others I could reveal but then I'd have to shoot you!

Contrast this level of sophistication in British designed and built kit with the stuff shown in the recent images of the kh-101 undergoing development in the Soviet Union at the same time.

Ukrainska Pravda: The US commends Ukrainian pilots’ proficiency and retraining pace – Ukraine’s Air Force

The US commended the proficiency of Ukrainian pilots evaluated for retraining to operate multirole combat aircraft (MRCA), as reported by Ukrainska Pravda, referencing Ukraine’s Air Force Command Brigadier General Serhii Holubtsov, speaking during a national telethon.

“We anticipated that our pilots would demonstrate their proficiency, and this was the case. Two pilots passed the test in the US. The evaluation is quite favorable, and at the conclusion of the report it is indicated that the F-16 retraining program for Ukrainian pilots can be significantly shortened compared to standard pilot training programs,” stated Brigadier General Holubtsov.
In the earlier reports, according to a spokesperson for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Colonel Yurii Ihnat, two Ukrainian pilots visited the US to assess the capabilities and requirements of a potential modern aircraft base training.

It is important to note that the Air Force has repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine requires MRCAs of the 4th+ generation, such as the F-16. It is for the purpose of gaining an advantage over the Russian aggressor in the ongoing war. The US has indicated that the transfer of such aircraft is not currently a priority.

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, the Commander of the Air Force of the AFU, has urged his NATO colleagues to form an aircraft coalition and make every effort to provide Ukraine with MRCAs of the 4th generation capable of protecting Ukraine from Russia’s air terror.

The Moscow mosque conflict is escalating in Russia.

After Christian protests, Muslims have not been allowed to build a mosque in Moscow on ground considered holy by the Christians.

In response, Muslim Tatars set a Christian church on fire in Nizhnekamsk.

Kadyrov’s Chechen soldiers record a video from the Ukrainian frontlines, threatening to wage war against the Russians who have started protesting against the construction of a mega mosque in Moscow which could house 60 000 Muslims.

The M119A1/A2 is a lightweight towed howitzer in service with the US Army. The howitzer provides direct and indirect fire support to the forces deployed in combined arms operations.…
I am hugely appreciative of all of your updates re the situation in Ukraine but your use of the phrase "tank ammo" is misleading. 105mm calinbre ammo is now largely defunct as tank ammo but widely used in the M119 howitzer and various other light artillery guns particularly where you are looking for high mobility and going after localised targets rather than entire grid squares. Keep up the good work and if I am wrong and it is indeed the case that older tank guns are being brought to bear I will have no problem providing a Mea Culpa.
