I was just thinking what an amazing experience it will be to be such an important part of such a historic occasion. And that on top of the professional jobs being done on operations. Amongst all the bad news, there are still things that our people can be very proud of. I'm sure their ceremonial performance will be exemplary. Some things I still miss about serving.
Hats off to you all.

I won't be in the UK, and if I had been I would not have gone to London anyway as I can't handle the place at the best of times. I would have found a quiet dignified pub somewhere in the countryside and watched the proceedings in the company of like minded folk.
As it is, I will watch on TV, sadly I shall have to endure the commentary of the BBCs resident gloating lefty, David Dimbleby. The ITV alternative is even worse as the schedule shows that it will be interspersed with the Jeremy Kyle show. How demeaning and insulting to the memory of the late Baroness Thatcher.

Courtney ... Nice appropriate words of inspiration for all those in the Military taking part on Wednesday.
Let's hope that due respect is shown by the majority of the populous ... but I fear that some "socially ignorant" few will look to embarrass themselves ...

Thank you, Coff. I would love to be there with them. If others choose to let themselves down then it will be rather sad reflection of what Britain has become.
I was encouraged at the weekend in our pub whilst be talking to a vehement anti-Thatcherite, who was clearly driven by his politics. BUT he said all that he thought of her would have to wait for another time; it would be shameful (his word) to behave like an animal (his word) at a time like this.

thing,
Don't tar them all with the same brush. I have been both a Civil Servant and a Council Officer since leaving the mob. I was grossly overworked and grossly underpaid. Mrs Deepest is still a council official and left for work at 0700 this morning and is still not home.

Would have been nice to see the RAF pair split between the QCS and one from the rest of the RAF, i like what the Navy and Welsh Guards have done, a couple at the start of their careers.... Sad sad day, and a job I would hate to perform.

I don't own this space under my name. I should have leased it while I still could
Nov4, maybe walk is correct having seen the picture of the guard at the cathedral.
Wish the Services had got their act together and worn similar dress. The Jollies in white helmets, woolly pullies, the cavalry in ceremonial headdress and two guys in flasher macs

Vasco, military salary, quite right, anno dominie. . . .Of course the law of unintended consequences then kicked in. Pay rises in gross figures increased dramatically, as intended, as did pensions, which wasn't intended.
It was also, IIRC, a Labour Government that brought in home to duty travel at about 1.5p/mile. I first drew this commuting from St Eval.
PAYD also came in with some crazy implementation with costs for a slice or toast, a pat of butter etc. Curious it took over 30 years before it came in properly. Who says the RAF makes decisions on the spur of the moment.
Sorry for digressing.

Military Salary
I'm not a betting man, but very sure that it was introduced in April 1970. We had bought our first house (well the Anglia Building Society had bought 95% of it) only a week before, and when we applied for the mortgage my Fg Off salary was £1900 - one week after moving in I had an increment on the 1st April ( yes really commissioned on April Fool's Day ) plus the '70 rise plus the new military salary and wow I was now on £2400, riches!
Back to thread, let us hope Lady Thatcher's funeral passes off peacefully. RIP.

Political Balance
I have heard that the Government are (allegedly) already planning to give Arthur Scargill a state funeral in order to provide political balance for history. I gather that his quarters will be displayed in Durham, Yorkshire, South Wales and Nottinghamshire with his head lying in state on the entrance to the Tower of London...

The Bearded Idiot's rantings are just becoming a joke now. It's so over-done and obvious that he's simply making himself a rather sad, demented laughing stock.

And Phil would read passed the 'from' line?
I guess it would not go in file 13 but may surface in 30 years time with some ribald marginal comment.

Her coffin just entering St Clement Danes. What a beautiful church.
BBC camera work is excellent. Just zoomed in on the card in the flowers on her flagged coffin - the inscription reads "Beloved Mother. Always in our hearts"
