Vasco, military salary, quite right, anno dominie. . . .Of course the law of unintended consequences then kicked in. Pay rises in gross figures increased dramatically, as intended, as did pensions, which wasn't intended.
It was also, IIRC, a Labour Government that brought in home to duty travel at about 1.5p/mile. I first drew this commuting from St Eval.
PAYD also came in with some crazy implementation with costs for a slice or toast, a pat of butter etc. Curious it took over 30 years before it came in properly. Who says the RAF makes decisions on the spur of the moment.
