Congratulations to all - as we've come to expect we can still do these things well - dare I say better than anyone? I remember the heart stopping moment when the pall bearers staggered as they carried Churchill up those steps, so those guys did very well.

One slight complaint - is Dimbleby getting past it? He made several errors in his commentary, identifying Mark Thatcher's wife as Carole Thatcher, referring to Lady Thatcher's two granddaughters (didn't he notice one was a young man?) and several other lesser slips. Never mind - I cant think of a suitable replacement at the moment.

He had me puzzled there too. Glad I'm vindicated!

I don't like the man, but I take my hat off to him. His commentary was appropriate, he kept his lefty views out of it, and was probably the right man for the occasion.

Simply echoing all the preceding posts, I thought the whole occasion was very dignified and well presented by BBC TV. The attendance by those of differing political and personal views brought added dignity, and cast a shameful shadow on those who chose to have aired their views in a publicly disrespectful manner, IMO. Nice to see those from abroad making the effort too, especially the elderly ones.

Pall Bearers

Unless you have done it yourself you can't imagine what a sterling job those Guys did.

I hope their boss makes sure they are well lubricated tonight. The SM looked a proper old school boss

I did feel for the lad who was paired up with the bloke who was 4ft across the shoulders and he couldn't get a grip on top. His arms must have been burning. And the faces didn't show a thing.

Gentlemen you did the Nation proud.

Two bellringer-type comments on the commentary.

The BELLS did not toll before the service: it was one single bell .

And [my much-better ringer Mrs LB agrees] no attempt was made to ring the Stedman Cinques after the service, at least during the live broadcast: they just rang rounds 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, 1,2,3,4 ......... Stedman is far from easy, perhaps they simply did not feel up to it? Good decision if so. For weddings we always ring to the lowest common denominator in the band, the bride and groom do not want clattering errors on the big day.

The bearers were excellent but we noticed a few bare hands on the way out, presumably to help grip on opposite shoulder?

A very very good show by a very very sadly depleted military.

I thought tolling was a single bell. If they were worried about Stedman, they should have used this

exactly so, tolling is usually a single bell, it was this time, the commentary said bells plural.

Bells to all commentators and indeed Mr Banglestein, who keeps us waiting, as the 1Group Mess songbook had it.

I bet St Clements Danes had some ex-FI Vet incandescent with the junior service getting even more undue attention.

Perhaps the subject of yet another rabid rant on the Bearded Idiot's blog. Or a letter to the Minister - something for him to look forward to. He'll probably get some dubious statistics (in graphic format) proving that the Navy did so much more for Lady Thatcher than the other two services put together that there were moral, financial and operational imperitives to exclude St Clement Danes from the day. Perhaps a case to hold a memorial service with just the Navy playing all the roles and a parade of SHAR pilots - after all, ALL of them were Navy.

Sarcasm aside, that man is really poisoning the Navy's image. I'm very sorry about that because I've always been a great fan of the Senior Service.
