Interesting point of view that they could not be sold on. Has anyone even considered offering them up to our NATO allies/Colonial cousins/anyone else at a cheap rate. What was the cost of the Upholder submarines? 300 mil each to the UK taxpayer and a quid each to the Canadians? Seeing as India is buying the P8, why don't we give the Indians 9 x MRA4's instead of a wadge of wonga - that they are probably using to pay for the P8's. Might even look nice flying out of Brunei??

BBC News - Nimrod aircraft 'could become scrap metal'

One has already been built and eight others were being worked on at the firm's plant in Woodford, Cheshire.

...

The prime minister said the project had cost more than £3bn.

Kevin French, Unite chairman at the site, said: "It looks like they are going to cut them up.

'Chop wings off'

"They will probably bring in a big company to crush them and cut them up, chop their wings off. It will be as crude as that.

Better public relations to hire a small, eco-greenie firm to chop the Nimord's arms, that is, wings off.

Local MP Mark Hunter said he had spoken to the defence secretary about the site and was told the MoD would be "looking to stop [production] as soon as possible".

Mr Hunter said he was told the planes could not be sold as there was a "limited market" for such aircraft.

Why won't someone take these poor airplanes in and give them a a good home?

Well if the reported deal India did on the P8 is accurate i.e. 8 a/c plus support training ect until 2019 (2014/15 ISD) for $2.1 billion that is the equivalent of just operating the MRA4 for 7 years let alone buying the a/c. They also get a more Multi Mission a/c and access to a large supply base with US commonality and a possible SIGINT capability to follow. I don’t think anyone will touch MRA4 as it can’t compete with that even though it is/would have been a better pure MPA aircraft.

Here are some suggestions :

Sorry, banter setting set to "harsh"!

I expect that Duxford would have one to go next to TSR2 or next to Nimrod AEW at the Solway Aviation Museum.

The cancellation cost is believed to be set at around £1 Billion. Incredible that we can't afford to keep it when the penalty clause is more than 5 year's servicing and running costs! You couldn't make it up.

Willard Whyte, I'm sure the kipper fleet will "****ing relax and get a sense of humour" when the redundancy letters are issued - it's all very funny.

I thought Le Creuset would be more interested in the RN disposals at Rosyth.

"Pots and pans will break my bones..." and all that type of inappropriateness is the essence of military aircrew banter.

So go blow yourself in a hankerchief, Gilbert, in your backroom with the rest of your boys (see what I did there? Aircrew Banter 1.01).

With le Creuset, you pay a single up-front fee and get a product which gives decades of reliable service, with zero "through life costs" and no need for intricate in-service support arrangements.

With BAE Systems, you pay a series of ever-increasing advances, and... oh I give up, you get the idea.

Cancellation costs

DKB

Not sure that anyone actually knows the cancellation costs yet - but it won't be a small number.

Perhaps MOD will have to cancel something to pay for all the cancellation costs.

That's because, generally speaking, once you have bought a saucepan you don't then decide you wanted a microwave before it gets delivered

Poss buyer

With the strength of the dollar, and if the offer price is the same as the Victoria Class it would make a good deal for the AP3C replacement.
What could be worse buy the P8 after all the test and development of the weapon system was done by BAE and their prime subcontractor on the MRA4 project
We could even recruit some trained personnel, no jockanese though

I wonder if any of our leaders would dare attend this event.
ASDEvents - Anti-Submarine Warfare
It's not like they'd have to travel a long way, I'm sure that they would learn something from it!

On the other hand.... maybe not.

Slightly higher ceiling than a fully laden Mk 1 or 2 even.

pmills575,

I see that the Stn Cdr from Kinloss was due to be one of the guest speakers. I wonder if he will still be going?
