Chips retired - did he go to France as he always said he would? I recall listening to a debrief by Chips, given to one of his OCU students in the 230 Sqn flight planning room, immediately after their arrival at Gutersloh. Chips, throwing down a 1/4 mill chart: "Now listen here, Sonny! There are some things in this life that you just DON'T do - and calling air traffic controllers "Sir" is one of them!"

George is probably hiding in an office somewhere in MOD, still trying to dodge the C exam....
George of the "Is Maggie (Thatcher) on (Puma) intercom? No? In that case I can talk about my effing piles!"
Crewman: "George - you haven't started the engines yet - EVERYONE down the back heard that!"

Saw chips a few years ago at Shawbury while he was doing his resettlement course in woodwork. He got sent out of the bar every night for wearing jeans with holes in!. I believe he did go to live in France after that. Never forget his comment at breakfast in Gut when, after a heavy night in the bar, a WAAF officer asked him how his head was. "never had any complaints" was his answer. Exit WAAF with very red face.

Heard Chips gave up the adventure in France a couple of years ago and was back in Blighty.

Bumped into Chips in a 'Bricolage' (DIY) in the Dordogne about two years ago. He, himself, was living up near Poitiers but was 'house sitting' for some chum of his at the time. He told me he was making tables for customers out of solid oak...seemed to be enjoying his retirement very much but was thinking of relocating to the US...that was the plan at the time!

Can you imagine how that would upset the apple cart for the US Military "Don't Ask...Don't Tell" policy?

This would not, by any chance be the FG Off / FLt Lt Walter Watts who I did TLP with (around 1984) and who is now a highly respected Widebody Captain for a major UK airline....is it?

edited to add: I would never, ever, knowingly allow anyone who was completly, err, tired to sleep on the carpet in the corridor outside my door until early call for first wave .....

As he/she now has the appropriate plumbing for being the receiver, I don't see how it could go against our really stupid 'refueling' policy.

But it does rank up there with things that make you go

I imagine quite a few people would be quoting John 11.35 on reading about these unfortunate people. It is after all an accident of nature...a very sad one, and difficult for all. We had a similar situation on the North sea where someone changed sexes...I knew him before the op and I knew her after the op...she was still the pleasant person that I had known before..

These things happen and a person in the military must have more than the average problems, certainly his co-workers would...their training has fitted them for a particular role...that hasn't changed ...the person might well have as perhaps has the attitude of his/her co-workers...would these people be able to remain a viable part of the team, that should be the question and not about references to 'plumbing'. PC should not prevail...God forbid that people in this position should ever fall into the hands of the enemy.

Thank you.

NC 43,

No offense intended. If my computer figure gave such, I apologise. Couldn't find one that signified "ehhhh?"

So, hopefully this is a nice person and is still doing an admirable job for the RAF. I don't understand such a person's motivations, but then I don't have to.

My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek mainly referencing the US "don't ask, don't tell" stupidity from a previous post.

v/r,

Well put, although it is a sad indictment of a once great environment.

It must be! If you see him again, ask about the time he flew, low level, over the famous royal palace in Jockistania (vertically and with both burners engaged !!). Top bloke by all accounts. Somewhat similar in character to the now, well respected, GR4 pilot and Flt Cdr called "Lager." We also had a budding "character" at Lyneham, just before I left, who might have come from one of the provinces to the west of mainland UK; I'm not allowed to say for sure. Most of the available "pooh", liable to descend from above, seemed attracted to him like a magnet. Nonetheless, another completely excellent and professional young man.

Blackie is alive and well and living here in Gut, having hung up his spurs last year and passed me his AR5 to return...we hold it here, in our squippersafe (TM) just in case he feels the need to rejoin the other 'old boys' at the oxon Cab rank ...
