happyb777

Don't fool yourself mate. As many have said, we generally have competent, professional aviators here. Because of that they realise that it is not your fault that the company is hiring DEC's and they are still committed to carrying out their duties appropriately. That doesn't mean they are happy with the situation. Far from it in fact. They are just mature enough to realise that any childish actions on their part are only going to reflect poorly on them as individuals and not make one scrap of difference to the situation.

The real measure of what F/O's think of DEC's is indicated by the amount of guys that are choosing not to accept employment with EK.

Re: Latest EK selection news

Hmm...
...I was joining my current company as DEC as well and I had no problems, but for shure you have to be more "experienced" and if you have gained your hours by tricks or you are not experiencend enough to handle the DEC situation....things can go bad. After almost then years in my operations, I handled the DEC fine, but I donīt know EK.

However, the topic was :DEC (EK) yes or no....anybody who has the requested experience in widebodies/longhaul ops
(not shorthaul/mediumhaul 737/A320/MD80...etc) with a professional attitude is my collegue, regardless where I am sitting and be shure I will support him or her. This is my point of view and it figured out fine until today.

Maye pprune is really not the right medium to base decisions on, that is also my point of view. I have been flying in companies with and without unions and all of them have taken DECīs. When you reach the company requirements you will be upgraded in an expanding company, believe me if you donīt make it there you will make it nowhere.

I am very shure that you have been asked the question : How do you handle it to be First Officer for 5 years?

Why did you guys sign the contract???

You feel bad about where you are???
You need green grass???
You need LHR rain???

Try to calm down, relax....if you donīt feel better, go where ever you think it is better. I know itīs arrogant, itīs selfish.....itīs so damn bad, but maybe it is the truth.

Happy new year
marsalama

It doesnt matter if you are flying MD80 ,737 or B 767.

In my previous company. I was flying A320 and then B767 and now B777. There is no difference or do you have to be born on widebodies to fl them.

Thank u

I am leaning more towards the recent emiratesinterview.com and I downloaded it instantly. There are also great tech books out their for the tech exam that I bought too.

Re: Latest EK selection news

Well, Happy777,
sorry for not responding you on the "born on the widebody" stuff, but it is really too low profile, maybe I didnt made myself clear enough,
Someone has been Captain for about 10 years on a A320 e.g. coming now to a new aircraft, company, new route network, ground ops etc.
Do you agree that there might be some change in operation?

Could you imagine if this DEC now will fly with guys who have at least the same experience like you plus three years of company time, for example.
Do you think that this constellation presents the optimum?
I do mind about the experience of an DEC Happy777, specially one is bringing less qualification for the required operation.
Flying hours finally do not say nothing at all. I can understand the most of the EK FO´s concerning about exactly this fact.

Makes no sense you have an more experienced and qualified F/O on type ,he will not feel well flying with you, including me and I had also my personal experience with this situation.

Captain should be the most experienced on type (apart from other criterias), this is my opinion only Happy777.

cheers

Re: Latest EK selection news

Hi ETOPS, my friend, what I meant to say, and it obviously didn't come out correctly is that the people who joined EK as F.O.s 3 years ago, or even just over 2 years ago, made the decision to do so based on career advancement closely paralleling seniority. They did not expect there to be DECs hired in front of them. I, for one, would not have joined EK three years ago if I thought there was a chance of DECs being hired in front of me.

The comparison to KAL was meant to say that KAL have been hiring DECs for 25 years, so anybody joining there as an F.O. should know that will continue to be the case.

The hiring of DECs at EK has not adversely affected upgrades on the 777....yet, but it will. It has adversely affected the upgrade times of First Officers on the Airbus. That is without question. Our classmates on the Airbus, as you well know, will not upgrade at the same time as those on the Boeing.

With the further hiring of DECs at EK, the adverse effects on F.O.s will only continue. The rapid expansion mitigates the pain, but at some point the expansion will stop and some will be stuck in the right seat for a very long time.

Re: EK selection and interview prep.

I have gone through the interview and it was recent and it appears to have changed since XYZ book was out. Emirates focus a lot on the phyc test and its accurely portrayed in the emiratesinterview.com but in a nutshell Emirates takes what they have learned from the phyc tests and generate your final interview qestions based on this. I didn't get much generic questions. Its good to know how they score you to help you pass which is also in the newest book. I got the offer a week after my interview, if I was you and cost is not an issue, I would probably buy both books. You can never have to much information and its a cost to get there which may guarantee the offer. It was the toughest interview I have ever had, Good luck!

Thanks a lot JJF!!! But I would suppose you're still to undergo a full UAE medical even if you hold a valid JAA class1, right??

Yes you would......First a government medical to live in the country, which is basically a blood test to check for HIV. Next medical is a company medical which is to check you are fit for EK employment (may have been done at your interview or back at home base) and finally your GCAA flying licence medical for the issue of your GCAA ATP licence

I don't care how many hours you have or type ratings you have acquired you still are not qualified to jump anyone on our senority list. Get in line matey!
By the way how much money are you making and what airline are you working for that makes EK seem so glamourous to you? Is that sensible enough for you!

Well mR Swish,
there is F/Os in the airline with more hours and more command time than you, thats how hard the company is screwing these guys.
They have no problems with checks or anything some had it in writing they would get a command in 18 months , but the standard answer seems to be unfortunately you joined as an f/o .........

dont be such a cocky bastard and you must also be a desperate one as well if you have to come here............

P.S.: I would appr if s/one sends me a sample B777 captain's roster.

There is no such thing as a sample roster. Rosters change so much from one individual to another that you will not get a good idea of the schedule based on one roster. You could have a month full of India night flights or one with 3 Europe turns and a short MEL. You could have 8 days off or 18.

Generally speaking you will get about 3 or 4 nice rosters per year with the other 8 somewhere between okay and crappy.

Emirates Pilot Interview Handbook

Hello fellow Pilots..i've finally got the call for the EK interview coming next month. Needless to say, i've been cramming to be prepared, and buying or borrowing whatever book i need to make a great impression.

I wanted to buy the "EMIRATES PILOT INTERVIEW HANDBOOK" through the web but it seems i need to have a Paypal account..from which my country does not have Paypal.

Anyone out there will to sell a used one to me? please pm. thanks. will send the dough with western union asap.

Love you man, Location 3rd world. Obviously you don't have any aspirations or you will be coming to a democracy and airline politics the same as your own location > 3rd world. Good luck on your command in 8 yrs ( thats an optimistic view)!!
Ciao

Oh, by the way, how many guys are they recruiting from your part of the world now as it seems to be the only place they can get people to join from. The pay here will only make a labourer on the roads happy, and they work BLOODY hard for what they get.

Hey, even paying peanuts and getting Gibbons is a lot better than peanuts for........, how long has, finally been called been?

Welcome, its a happy place, you will never be bored in the car on the way to work as you never have enough time to have a "company conversation".

Ciao

fatigueflyer 26th Feb 2006 16:13

Hey, don't worry about the handbook. Just be yourself as EK is so desperate for pilots its not funny. Looking at hiring and training around 380 in the next 12 months. Rather than just doing the interview look around you when you are here cos this building site will be here for a long long time. Getting through the interview is not difficult but living here with your family may be. Roads are dangerous due to crap drivers and road conditions. Buy the biggest car you can afford!! The cost of living is high and on an FOs salary with 2 kids expect to be just getting by until your upgrade....whenever it happens??? Schools are ok but not great. Work is chaotic at best....read the threads posted! Expect to listen to a lot of whining and bitching at work. Also, in case you have not heard, direct entry captains take up a lot of the headlines these days. On the bright side, we have an average of 350 days of sunshine a year according to EMAAR, a company here who builds many residential developments therefore not much drainage is reqd.....should see the past few days news after 2.5 days of rain!! Oh, there are lots of malls, sales, restaurants, bars, cafes etc cos the big cheese does not like you spending your hard earned salary anywhere but in Dubai. Came back from leave recently and had a new joiner on board. When he was waiting at the carousel for his bags he definitely had an expression of "what the hell am I doing here???"

thrust clb 26th Feb 2006 20:15

Ooops...i think i woke up some angry , unhappy people around here. :bored: Probably the friendly, encouraging EK pilots i chatted with in INC duty-free last month was just being nice? thanks anyway..

Emirates Interview

Have you tried Transair.com.uk? They sell pilot supplies as well as interview prep books. I think they take Visa/MC for payment.

As far as aviation jobs go, it all depends on where you currently are and where you plan to be in a few years. For some folks EK might actually be a step up from where they currently are. It may give someone a chance to fly a heavy jet for a year or two and then move on to greener pastures. On the other hand, you may choose to stay on. It's an individual decision based on your current circumstances.

This forum has some great posts and "realistic" information on expectations.
It makes you take off the "rose colored glasses" and as you sip the "company Coolaid" you begin to sort things out for yourself.

I remember having an app with EK years ago, hoping to get call. Well I finally got the call last month. Timing was just off by a few years. Flying as Capt now for a major LCC in the U.S. it isn't worth it for me.Few years ago I would have had a different response.

Good luck with the process. If I can find my old "Emirates interview" handbook I will be happy to mail it toyou.

steven coe 26th Feb 2006 22:36

Preparation for Emirates

With regards to preparation for the EK interview, I did not find the Interview Guide as useful as I thought it would be. That is not to say that looking over it didn't make me aware of the "group exercises" and how they were to be conducted. The techincal questions, were all answered by reading "The Technical Pilot Interview" by Gary Bristow.

The sim evaluation is straight forward, no tricks. If one has flown jets long enough and been to sim for years and years, then flying the profiles are easy enough. Fly it the way you would fly your company aircraft.

The group exercies are not hard, but does require one to think logically. Working along with your fellow team members, remember to make your point known also without seeming overly pushy.

The scariest part is sitting down with the Psychologist after the psychometric tests. They will read you like an open book! After review of the test results, they are able to tell you who you are, your concerns, your habits, and so on..That was the toughest part I thought.

Passed all the tests. Got the call...

Murrenfan 27th Feb 2006 01:18

critical winge

Pilots from 3rd world are submitted to the same process with EK as from your "first world" pilots. And on their countries they have the same type ratings(A320s,30s, 40s, 737s and even 777s) and sim checks that you have in your "first world" country. And most of them fly to different places across the world and operate in busy airports (LHR, CDG, FRA, JFK, ORD, MIA, etc) exactly as pilots from your "first world" country. In other words, they are PILOTS exactly as you are, and just because you were born in a "first world" country, it doesn't make you any better than them.

Cheers

Mfan
