Kotakota or anyone else at Oman Air--Do you know if MichelleP is on vacation? There has been zero response to several emails. She had responded quite promptly in the past.

Thanks TB for the informative post. Oman Air sounds pretty good as far as their terms and conditions given the equipment. Looks like they actually might be a better place rather than FlyDubai.
Anyone in the field can you answer these questions?
1. Does your pay start on day of joining ?
2. During vacation and when you are not as yet flying, do you just get the base pay or do you also get the supplementary allowance TB mentioned?
3. Is performance pay same as overtime? When does that kick in? Are guys flying overtime?
4. Anyone get the profit sharing check as yet?
5. Can you take your vacation in one block?
6. Where does the B737NG overnight? Are most trips turns and deep night to Incredible India? How many days off normally in 7 days?
7. As far as medical treatment, do they cover prescription drugs ?

1. Yes , pay from Day 1 , that is basic and supplementary , but not rent as they provide hotel apartment for up to 4 months .
2.Yes.
3.No overtime , 'Performance Pay' is Flight Duty pay , the more you fly the hourly pay increases . Only trainers do 90+ at the moment . Numbers being built up for the approaching day when a large number transfer to A330s late spring.Expect busy times after that !!
4.Profit shares unlikely for a while , expansion costs money and oil price is still oil price !! Don't count on it.
5.New vacation system just kicking off for 09 , 46 days ( 36 +12 Public Holidays ) , divided into 2 lots of 23 days with a 'swop' system in place for chunks of 7 days or more .
6. Only a couple of layovers at the moment , in India , but expecting more as route structure extends.
7.Not sure about prescription charges -will get back to you on that . I know they will provide medication at the clinic but unsure for how long.
2.Yes.

Thanks Kotakota for the information. Do you know if Oman Air will be having a class every month starting in Jan 2009 or is it every so often?
What is the training like? Do you go through a full ground school, 4-6 sims, a check, IOE (initial operating experience) and then a line check before you are released. How long did it take you to get on line from the time you joined? Are all the trainers/examiners Omani's? How are they do deal with?
You seem to have a good handle on the situation there. Many of us here in Incredible India are thinking about the ME as an option. Some colleagues have already been forced out by JetAirways.
PS--Housing allowance seems very low for the M.E. My allowance in India is almost double. And the cost of living here is much cheaper.

I think the Oman Air package is pretty comparable to FlyDubai even though FlyD is actually offering more money on paper. Here are some key points for/against FlyD & Oman Air.
1. Pay at FlyD is about $2000 more a month based on 80 hrs. At first you will not fly that amount so you will not make as much.
2. Housing allowance is 3 times the allowance of Oman Air. However cost of housing in DXB is also much more.
3. FlyD offers car allowance while Oman does not. Traffic in DXB is worse than Muscat.
4. Educational allowance is more at FlYD. Oman Air will only cover around 50% of true costs even though they say they pay 75% upto a certain amount.
5. Vacation/tickets etc the same
6. End of service benefits better in UAE. 21 days/yr versus 2 weeks.
7. FlyD offers loss of license and accidental insurance. Oman only offers accidental.
8. Shipping allowance offered by Oman, not by FlyD.
9. Medical is free at Oman (only while in Muscat) while at FlyD medical is only free for employee and you pay 25% for dependents.
10. Muscat I'm told is more family friendly and a quiter place to be. DXB is a busy busy place.
I think if the ME is where you want to be on the NG then either place looks fairly promising. Housing will remain a major concern though. Expect to dip into your salary for decent housing.

WHO is STUPID
History just repeats itself here in QA.
A bit of history chaps:
2000 --> Algerians helping Algerians (look at all the algerians with staffnr 2XX and more)
2001 --> British helping British ( Fleming helping his mates)
2002 --> Egyptians helping Egyptians (remember the Ismael brothers, now running Air Arabia)
2003 --> Qatari helping Qatari (The reign of Hassan and Hamad)
2004 --> Here come the Indians, helping each other, under the leadership of L.M.
2005 --> Indian supremacy continues, number of Indian pilots tripple
2006 --> The end is near, Too much foul play left a stain/many dead bodies behind in the closets!
2007 --> QR is a ship without captain, but mid 2007 the Brits are there again in the role they like the most: COLONISING places!
2008 --> The resurection of the British empire in Qatar Airways under the leadership of the comical duo Ian and Bill! The Nigels at their best!
2009 --> Only time can tell! But allready the number of Nigels is rising steeply! And not on the 320 slave fleet! Nono, on the B777 off course!
Will the Brits be able to brake the Indian record of abusing this company? Will they be able to reach higher levels of personal enrichment than their Indian Brethren? How long before the CEO will see through their play as well, kicking them out on the spot!
One sad record they have broken already: That one of plumetting flight ops morale to unknown depths on the shortest period of time possible!
At least the Indian Birdy Namnam management gave us all something to look foreward to (upgrades/transfers/payrise), the Nigels do not even bother doing that! On the contrary: Hotac quality goes down, pay goes down, no more transfers, upgrades big question mark!!!
I know the Nigels like sodomy, but I did not know they would do it so bluntly! even the vaseline has become a very rare commodity these days! They just DO it!
Above are copy from what happened in Qatar, it is nearly the same scanerio in Oman Air, the DMO (local) appointed a British as Fleet Captain, despite locals pilot complaint's and bad record of this British new guy.
He also (DMO) without shame sack the Fleet Captain after the locals protest throught the goverment.
In Japan the DMO like this may take HARAKIRI because wrong decision

I guess you are suggesting that Oman Air is not a place to go? This is one of the few negative comment I have seen here on the thread. Everyone is pretty much in agreement that they are very slow to process, almost uninterested.
Can anyone tell me who the Chief Pilot is and the key players on the NG (this week!!).

No I didn't but just to warn you this place is not haven, I been following this thread and I knew you are so enthusiastic to joint, maybe you are jobless at the moment, but Oman Air and Muscat just like Singapore Airlines and Singapore but SQ step ahead that the system is worked well already, There is no key player of NG here but be calm don't again so enthusiastic

Fortunately, I am well employed and so I don't have to go to Oman Air unless I really need to down the road. I am curious about what you have posted and so would appreciate if you could elaborate. It will help many of us who have not joined or are considering joining to rethink the option. In the past on this thread there has been very little negative comments and so it would be nice to get a different perspective so long as it is an honest one (goo, bad or ugly). Cheers.

Spicejet sent a couple of B737NG F/O's to Oman Air on deputation. Some of them did not have 750 hrs in type. They were sent back. So I think that is a solid requirement. At least it was about 1 year or so ago.

Hotel apartment for us was Dar El ( or Al ) Deyafa in Ghubra , just off the highway between airport and 'town' , absolutely fine for a few months , own kitchen , satellite tv , room cleaned every day , laundry service available ( but cheaper to get it done at one of the many just around the corner ) , big hypermarket across the road , petrol station next door etc.

Has anyone joining Oman Air done the psychometry test. I have been told that it can be done anywhere else as long as you have the certificate of completion. I have noticed a couple of places online that offer tests as well. One in Europe offers the IPAS test for free. If anyone has any experience with this please post your experience.
It appears that something is definitely in the air at Oman Air b/c from the most recent posts there have been some negative comments about the organization at large. There has been little information posted on who the CP is, the VP of Ops etc. Are they Omani? Or are they of some other nationality which is triggering the rascist card?
