Requirements for EK
never flown in the airlines
Applied 9 years ago trying to get the hell out of corporate in Saudi
Received an email recently to say" we understand you haven't updated you details for some time and welcome you to apply" followed by the usual Dubai is a great place to live.
I know, I have lived here for 3 years.
Only 8,000 hours command and 4,000 PIC biz jets. Nothing over 20,000 kg
Flown all over the world and filled up the list of airports operated to in the application like a christmas tree.
I am at the top of the best corporate eqipment on $10K/ month +++ all provided. Can I do the EK job, sure I can............ do I want to loose $$ for a few years.......I honestly don't know
The point is EK realise that 90% of biz jets have all have hi tech efis cockpits with HUDS, auto throttles, enhanced vision and now the 7 X is fly by wire. They cruise 6,000 nm at 0.86 M and have everything a rich guy would want in his private boat.
This will be the next pool of drivers they will want to take...............but will we come......
The big companies operate SOP's all day long so corporate guys now have CRM etc etc etc coming out their ears....... The transition to a regulated enviroment is no longer a stumbling block.
The question is who will cave in first???????????????
The airline needing crew because the fleet is on the ground costing $$$$ or the rich guy who demands his new aircarft has crew.......... considering the way they blow money on their vactaions, my money is the rich impatience corporate owner will cave in first and pay anything to have his crew on line. The airline can not make that descision in enough time to compete. I know a guy flying a true golf hero and he is on $18,000 / month................
What are your thoughts guys.

Well, Judging from the rumours that we'll be extending the PDP ( Pilot Development Program ) to DEC's, I'd say we're already on the downward slope.
Will someone with big enough balls please visit the top floor ASAP and tell them to STOP EXPANDING. Please!
Harry

Harry, you could tell them til you are blue in the face, they would still not listen. Dubai is 25% of the footprint size that Sheikh Mo plans it to be, the airline will be pivotal those plans.
Expansion is here to stay until something go's pop

No offense intended here but RJ guys are as good as qualified as any other airline pilot. The equipment in the CRJ is equally demanding as any Boeing etc.. I've flown both! I thought that flying RJ's kept me far more current than anything else in the airline biz. Flying 6 legs a day short runways montains all weather 1000 hrs a year made me a far more profficient than would be flying two legs a week and keeping current in the sim.

I really shouldn't bite...... but...
No one is arguing that CRJ or turboprop pilots are not fine aviators, especially as they will have much better currency of stick & rudder than us widebody boys. They do however lack the domain experience needed to safely operate in our diverse and sometimes challenging domain.
For example, imagine how well you would have controlled rest on a Himalayan route, with someone in either seat who has no experience of metric, Chinese airspace, etops, DARD (puke), HF, engrish, etc, etc, etc. Bit hard for them to make good quality decisions, when they just do not have the required experience to do so.
Yes they can read the Jepps (maybe), but it is not the same as having domain experience. Personally I have no problem with them at all, as long as the training system spends the appropriate amount of time to get them up to a decent level of domain ability. But there lies the problem, training does not have enough trainers to train the new trainers, because of all the trainers that have resigned (whoa).
So lets keep this intelligent, a Royal Navy pilot is REALLY good at skimming across the waves at 500mph and blowing up a battleship, a short haul pilot is REALLY good at short haul and a long haul pilot is good at......

Getting back to the numbers. I read yesterday that the number of Australian ATPL holders with current medicals has remained static at a fraction over 6000. That puts about 3% (200) working at Emirates. The other middle eastern airlines would likely bring this figure up to 5%. SE Asia (SQ,Cathay,Brunei, ect), must have 5%. Qantas could put its hand up for 35% and other domestic carriers 30%. Not sure where the rest are but the point I am trying to make is that there cannot be too many unemployed.

Things aren't SO good in the U.S. that people aren't looking at EK/EY/GF.
It's just...
Well, when they read pprune...
Well, you know...
Actually, we in the U.S. just aren't socialized to be expats. Even living in Europe (virtual America these days... ) seems REALLY exotic. I guess it's the fear of the unknown.
(Maybe if the U.S. had built an empire like the Brits, we'd be more comfortable with expat living. )
Still not ruling it out for me and the family, maybe if Golden Falcon hadn't steered me clear... TC
