I’m looking for some guidance, more so advice on any information pertaining to the sim assessment aspect of the selection process expected in Doha (due to go over month end), So my questions are;
- Any idea what simulator the SFIs/TREs use to conduct the assessment? Or is it potluck subject to 777/787 availability?
- Another concern, being a NTR (738NG RHS) candidate, I want to be better prepared due to the obvious lack of familiarity with the 777/787 flight deck layout/set-up, and also to get some clarity on handling characteristics, the FBW trim ops etc. Barring hiring out a 787/777 sim for practice and going broke in the process, can anyone recommend any helpful resources that I could use for prep in order to to ease the nerves in a vastly unfamiliar sweatbox?
Thanks
E.M

Hey all two quick questions, seriously considering Qatar, I would apply today but would be quicker for me to wait in my current position and join in a few years as DEC than to join now and wait for upgrade...
How does the schooling work? Do you get an allowance and does this cover the actual cost of sending kids to school and is there a limit to how my kids it covers? Also is there any difference here in terms of CPT or FO allowance? Currently have two in primary and in negotiations about another one! 😂😭
Lastly how strict are they re the 6000 hours jet time for DEC? By the time I have 2000 jet PIC I will have well over 6000 TT but likely only 4000+ jet time if that makes sense. All answers appreciated

To those in the know.
What is an approximate wait to hear back from Qatar?
Completed the application 6 weeks ago for DEC B787 and got the following reply-
"This is to inform you that we are currently processing your application and will update you in due course."
Do they give feedback if they are not interested in the initial application?
Has anyone been invited to interview for the same position recently?
Thanks.....

Pass fail rate is 50/50. If you prepare for it, should not be a problem. Maybe someone on here can advise you were to research for preparation.

Are you taking an interest in joining Qatar seriously ? It’s very simple, you pass and move onto the next stage. You fail, application ceases.

They screen on the 787.
As a 737 Pilot you should have no concern and won't need any training whatsoever. You dont need to press buttons and the PFD doesnt really change to the 737 (just a bit bigger).
In fact, its 10 times easier to fly, as it is fly-by-wire. You only need to trim when there's a change in speed (when youll feel the force on the control column)
Hope that helped
So there I was at the Sim centre in DOH, fully prepped post research on all things Dreamliner via YouTube’s, SIM enthusiast forums, Avgeek apps and what have you, when BOOM! Sim schedule change (went tech I think) last minute & they end up putting us (3 RHS NTR guys) on the Triple & guess who went first?! *Gulp*
As for the Sim profile it was pretty straightforward:
- Manual Take off (No FDs but A/T on) follow SID off RWY 16R
- Outbound on climb out, ding from the cabin, passenger heart attack scenario!
- So with the decision making mouth music part over and done with, we returned to DOH, on vectors (I got given some really tight intercept vectors) for the ILS 16R, both AP failed= Raw Data ILS (honestly I found this bit the hardest, it is,Ly over controlling as I couldn’t gauge the FBW trim ops, so I held the force on the column & just stubbornly danced my way down on the LOC/GS keeping them within limits praying for the sight of PAPIS. Finally broke cloud at minimums (CAT1 preset Wx) landed...a little firmly mind, ahem (do not use the 737 FCTM landing technique, flare earlier)

- Reposition - EFATO (much easier then the 737, no rudder trim required once airborne ). Flew a decent V1 cut profile, accelerated & levelled off & then flight freeze.
- Reposition - 12NM intercept for a S/E ILS, this time with FD available & A/T (hallelujah), all the way to minimums for SE G/A.
Overall core competencies assessed were - Problem solving, Decision making, Workload management, Communication & finally Flight path management - Manual handling skills. One thing I’ll say is in sim, make sure you make full use out of the other guy in a PM roles, use your companies SOPs, checklist flows, application of procedures during the whole ordeal & involve the other guy throughout when needed, if you don’t speak, ask, say, request anything, then expect the other guy to remain mute as a mannequin!
Thankfully, the verdict I received at the end of October was of a positive note *phew*
p.s: I think out of the 6 (including me) chaps that were at the SIM stage, only 2 got the ‘ yay you made it’ email. So yea, good luck guys and girls, make sure you prep well, especially if you make it all the way to the Stimulator stage!
